Fuel cap - what do you do with yours?

The A3 has a peculiar setup where the fuel cap is tethered to the body of the car with a short rubber strap. However whilst fuelling up you either have to hold this out of the way with your other hand or just let it dangle against the bodywork. Normally amny cars have a little slot to hold it in whilst fuelling or it's loose so can be placed elsewhere.

Or am I missing something???
 
There little grooves on the cap that can slide onto the petrol door arm.
 
It's one weird design. I had trouble working it out and was fidding around for ages before the penny dropped!

On the cap itself there are 4 grooves. What you need to align 2 of the grooves onto the top part of the fuel flap. It's like a balancing trick..
 
the manual sort of gives you a clue....buy hey, we are men...we dont read manuals do we....

Thanks everyone, still looks a very bizarre way to hold it, the excess diesel/cap is still potnetially exposed t othe painted side of the fuel flap.
 
I agree it's bizzare however I the cap is out of the way which actually works quite well.

Or you could just leave the cap dangling :think:

Why I like reading forums, I always thought it was naff having to leave fuel cap resting on body work, but now I know to look harder to see where it is clipped on :), Thanks :)
 
LOL, can't believe there is another "better" position to leave that in the manual!

I thought this was the way! I did have ago at doing "by the book" and its crap, my idea is far better. :)

Ive always just left it dangling.

LOL i always thought this but then thought that something was missing on mine so i leave it dangling... very interesting this!
Will try it next time i fill up... i just filled up today as well

Lol, my 1st fill-up had me standing at the pump like a prat trying to work that out - took me 5 mins. I think it was a week later that I read that section of the manual and thought - yeah, that's right, I'll hang it on my paitwork, to hell with mini scratches it'll make, reckon they wouldn't show for what, 10-20 fills. See, Audi can be stupid sometimes lol.
 
I always jam the filler cap into the pump handle so it will auto fill, i thought most on here done this too.

Well the pump has a auto stopper when its full, unless you take the pipe out whiles its gussing petrol lol. Im gonna try this stunt next time :jump:

Am I the only c*nt that does this but with the fuel-y part of the cap on the inside? No possible fuel/paint contact then....

I've always used the cut outs to slot the fuel-y part of the cap on the inside of the fuel filler flap. Never thought anything of it until I read this thread... :unsure:
 
FLOL at the amount of people that had just left the cap dangling there till this thread came along :laugh: :applaus:
 
I always left it dangling - but I must admit I thought it a bit naff.

Then I found this thread and realised what I was meant to do.

So last time I tried to balance it on the filler flap and it fell off clattering over the paintwork - far worse than if I'd just let it dangle...

I'm just going to let it dangle in future....

It's a fiddle but once secure it should stay on without it falling.
