after lots of searching on here for info on a bike rack for my S3 and not really getting all the answers i wanted i decided to just set about it my self. after deciding i didnt want a roof rack as i didnt trust my self lifting my bike on the roof that option got marked off and the next option was a rear mounted rack, but after seeing the state of my mates car from the straps that option also got crossed off. That left me with one option..... the dreaded tow bar. i manged to find one on here forsale so grabbed it, fitted it the other night and im so pleased i went with this option!

the tow bar is the Bosal detatchable one for the A3/S3 quattro, when its not on the car you cannot even tell its got anything tow bar related fitted to the car. The rack is a Thule 9403 which i also managed to get 2nd hand ;)

it might not be to everyones taste, but as ive started racing mountain bikes i needed a way to get to races with out bothering my mates for lifts etc.

anyway heres some pics for others that might be also looking for a rack .

Did you have to drill the chassis to fit the towbar, or was there holes there already ?

ah sweet! im trying to get my hands on a V10 or a driver 8 soon, i love my Blur LT tho its a awesome all rounder, i started XC racing a few weeks ago, 90% were on hard tails i turned up on my all mountain and came 3rd in my class haha

I ride mine for XC too but I dont race. I used to race DH but got back into XC as its more social to go out for a cruise with a load of mates.

i fancy a hardtail but the Bullits such good fun on the twisty single track stuff as it leaves everyone else for dead...hard work on the ups though..oof!.

good thread, so the first pic is with it fitted but detached as you cant tell its there at all which is a good start!? i have an Orange Patriot for DH, DMR trailstar for XC and a Muddyfox for DJ/street!

That is great! Nice bike too! I always wanted a Santa cruz! Just got a stumpjumper fsr comp, realy wanting to get back into my riding but quickly realizing just how unfit I am,

Good thread, your V8's (or are they V12's) could do with a lick of paint. How do you get into xc ridding, would like to give it a go.

Some nice bikes here!
I'm retro - 1997 Orange Vitamin T, 1996 Orange Clockwork, 1995 HSW Popcorn Blizzard...

Used to race a Cannondale Super-V DH, but I wasn't that fast and crashed quite a lot.

Been looking for a bike rack for the S3, so some handy info in here, cheers!

just upgraded to a Rocky Mountain Altitude 50 from a Cannondale V frame with carbon back arm and hope hubs. Old bike was good but killed me on the rough stuff new bike is a lot kinder on the old bones lol

These detachable ones are great, couple of work colleagues have them for their race (motor)bike trailors.

I use to race a Marin B17, not rode it in years :(

Your Orange is so cool! I used to have pace forks like them on my xc giant when I was at School! Chris King Headsets are the bees knees too!

Haven't tried it yet, but I'm guessing that a racing road bike will fit into an S3 when you fold the back seats down?

Just stick some plastic down to keep her clean, or a bike bag? Save myself a few hundred pounds for a tow bar and rack!

Sounds like my old bike! Viper Red was it? I loved that old thing.

Too true Hoggy! I built this bike a couple of years ago to the spec of my dream bike, circa 1997... I can't resist posting a few more pics...

V8's i had v12's on but had to remove them due them been that worn.

as for getting into racing, i just had a search for XC races in the NE and it just say happened that there was a new series starting this year up here so i thought id give it a go.

It'd be rude not to, seems Santa Cruz is the weapon of choice....

Its about 8 years old now and still going strong!.

Also got an original Rock Lobster with loads of Salsa kit on it and full XTR (circa '93!) sat in the garage along with my Kona Muni Mula :D

Cruz is my current tool of the trade though. Done all the main resorts in The Alps on it, all the biking forests in Wales (my folks like 15 minutes from Coed-y-Brenin...win!) and also done all the7 Stanes on it (Scotland). My local spot is Cannock though as its only about 40 minutes up the road.

Ahhh, roll on summer evening rides :)

thats nice that tom, im hoping to be doing the mega avalanche race next year (im assuming you know it) im heading back to glentress in a couple of weeks time so i'll try my rack out then, as im doing the C2C this weekend

I did the C2C about 8 years ago...make sure you dip your bike in the water on each side :)

Glentress is awesome, is that the one with the Helly Hansen trail?.

I mashed myself up last time I was up there but it was at Kirroughtree (Sp?)...3 broken ribs...ouch!

Went for a ride this evening, just fitted conti road sport tyres as I use my bike to commute, god they make a differance to road riding over my mountain bike tyres. Shame there was a bunch of t*ats wanting to hit me with water ballons put a downer on what was a nice evening to be out riding. Need to save up and buy the custom rims I want now so I dont have to change my tyres over all the time.

How long did take for your V12's to wear away the paint? I just fitted some green V8's to my GT Aggressor XC2 about a month ago (along with a new Deore hollowtech 2 crank to replace the peice of chocolate that they put on as standard). Will do a search on xc events, I know theres a couple trails near by me (chicksands). I currently just drop the seats and remove my wheels, but that bike rack looks like a good mod.

I had a pair of V8's for about 5 years and they were spot on....dont worry about the paint wearing off.

I'm rocking a set of white ones now :)

If the paint doesn`t wear off your not riding rough enough trails :p

Ives some old V12`s that ive just swapped onto new bike but ordered some wellgo mg1`s to try :)

I got a some V12mags and the paint has worn off after about 3 months of moderate riding! the paint on the V8's on my old on-one gimp jump bike lasted a lot longer?

I have V12 mags on mine and the paint lasted a few months. the bearings are still like silk tho! got crank bros 50/50's on my jump bike and they are the best pedals i have had!

Who cares if the paint chips off anyway, they're the best flattie you can get...great grip and bomb proof.

A bit of worn paint wont slow you down so dont worry about it :)

If you're not chipping paint you're not trying hard enough IMO anyway :)

Agree there mate! I once got hold of some extra long grub screws for added grip was a great Idea till they ripped my shins to peices! Bad times
