i have attempted changing the rear brakes on my 2000 plate 1.8t A3 and i can't get any further.... i have removed the wheel and took two screws out to release the caliper from the car but i can't get the pads to push back so i can get it off.... where do i need to go now???

if you're changing the discs and pads, just point a flat headed screw driver between the pad and the disc, hammer it until you see a bit of movement, and then just use the hammer to knock the calipers off.....you won't damage anything 
if you're only changing the pads, then just use the hammer to get the caliper off, but obviously you'll need to use an extra bit of force

i tried that but no joy.... been out banging... pushing.... pulling.... digging and it still only rocks up and down.
other than persevere, i can't suggest anything else. you could spray some brake cleaner on it and see if it soaks in and free's it up
well... after 4hrs out side with my eyes streaming from hayfever ive had to give up, yeh the handbrake was off but still couldnt budge it. I didnt wanna put too much pressure on incase i damaged the caliper or brake and couldnt use the car.
Im gunna try again tomorrow if not... down the garage with her.

last time i did mine i'm sure it was just a case of remove the 2 bolts that go into the sliders... unclick the handbrake cable and then the whole caliper complete with pads just pulled off..... unless you've got an absolutly massive lip on the outer edge of your disc'e thats stopping it all slide off
You need a rear caliper screw in tool, as you need to put pressure on the piston and twist at the same time. If all is well it will retract no problem.
I cannot believe people suggested he just hit it with a hammer, please guys if you do not know, please don't guess when it comes to things like brakes.

What i find as a good way to remove the caliper is flat blade screwdrivers in between the caliper and carrier at the top and bottom and gently wiggle it. Some are very tough, but will budge with persistance.
And as mentioned above you will require a caliper wind back tool.

I know he needs a wind back tool, but thats only once he's got the caliper off. The wind back tool is useless til he get the caliper off, and for that its a hammer job
