On a budget...

Hi,

I've been looking through quite a few threads, also on PB site plus a few others. I'm after some advice on what wash, polishes and wax etc to buy as there are so many to choose from. I don't want to spend a fortune but at the same time want decent products. Any advice is much appreciated. Car details are in signature if needed.

Regardless of car/colour;

Wash:

Meguirars sheepsking wash mitt
Megs Gold class shampoo, or Duragloss 902
Two buckets, pref with grit guards

Dry:

I4Detailing super plush towels/any other thick, absorbant towels

Polish:

Super Resin Polish is a jack of all trades and a basic starting point. For more cut by hand, 203s from Menzerna on a LC hand pad.

Seal/Wax:

Personally P21s (r222) or Natty's paste waxes. Better budget, Swissvax Onyx or Zymol Carbon.
Sealent wise, Chem Guys Blitz is great, budgeting I would go for Extra Gloss Protection.


This all depends on a range of things, personal preference being one key factor. You can stick with products from Halfrauds and get perfectly acceptable results, or (with this new online generation) buy from reputable companies, (such as Polished Bliss, Cleanyourcar and I4Detailing).

Two products, Gliptone or LTT.

LTT is tried and tested - love it.

Gliptone is something I am about to try, but heard nothing but good things about the products (considerably cheaper as well).

Detailing is a very personal thing, so what works on one occasion, on one car, in certain weather conditions may be the complete opposite to someone else's experience.

Any particular wheel cleaner you would say go for that you've had experience with?
 
Wheels wheels wheels.

Best bet is to get them really cleaned up once, then never have to do it again. What condition are they in?
 
Apart from needed a ****** good clean... mint condition.

Ok.

Clean as you usually would with brushes, a microfibre wash mitt (to get behind the spokes) and usual warm soapy water.

Once "clean", take them off :) Then wash with Auto Glym Engine and Machine Cleaner as it is a non-acidic cleaner, but will degrease them. Then make sure there is no tar (remove if present). Then clay the wheels and polish them with something like Lime Prime or Super Resin Polish.

Once you have completed this, use a high temp sealent like Chem Guys Wheel Seal, or Poor Boys Wheel Sealent. Normal waxes and sealents will not with stand the heat generated by your tyres and brakes. This will protect them (a few layers is a good idea) for at least 6-12 months and you can just wash with warm water to keep them looking spot on. The product can also be topped up.

To keep them at their best, repeat the process and "cut" them back once a year, and obviously re-seal.
 
Heres one for you mate...probably a bit of a long shot.
I have a Challenge Extreme power washer at the momenta and looking for a foam lance to attach.
I think it's the Lavor attachment, any ideas?
 
Been meaning to post this for a while mate... so, here goes...

Rinse
Snow Foam
Rinse

Wash using Megs lambwool wash mitt in conjunction with Megs Gold Class Shampoo & Conditioner.
(Two bucket method)

Clay using Megs quick clay kit, every 6 months?

Dry using Microfibre drying towel.

Polish using 203S Menzerna in conjunction with Lack County hand pads (Orange or Blue) Every wash?
Then a once over with Poorboys Super thick & Plush towel.

Wax - Poorboys Natty paste (White) using Megs foam applicator pad.How often should this be done?

Seal - Chemical Guys Blitz spray, How often and what to apply it with?


Wheels - As detailed above


Interior - Glipstone liquid leather conditioner (Apply with soft brush?)

I've recently noticed a few paint chips on the inside front wing too :sadlike:

OK, re- polishing with the Menz, this is good for removing swirls by hand, so only needs to be done as and when you feel it necessary. I would definately do it every six months so could tie in well with a good claying. Sometimes claying every 6 months is over kill, but where I live there are a lot of trees + currently road works, so I get a lot of contaminant build up, regardless of protection.

When you say a once over with the plush towel, this is just to remove the polish residues, so should be done panel by panel after polishing.

Natty's paste waxes will last for about 1-3 months, dependant on weather and washing. I applied my Natty's blue pretty much every month, but I have a garage allowing me to do this regardless of conditions/time of year.

The sealent should really be applied before the wax. This builds layers of long lasting protection - the wax is for added looks and beading! A good couple (2-4) layer of Chem Guys Blitz can last up to 3-4 months or so. Best part about a spray sealent is you can actually add another layer as and when you want after washing. This can be spread/applied with a decent microfibre applicator as found on Polished Bliss or any other good detailing website.

Re the leathers, depends on the condition. The soft brush is to agitate the cleaner deep into the leather to lift out grime, then wipe with a damp microfibre. Then you need to protect the leather again. Suggest either the LTT or Gliptone twins.

I will be looking to purchase a machine polisher hopefully in the near future, Once the menz 203s is applied as there are swirls present at the moment, what should be applied after that, just the seal then the wax or another polish - seal - wax?
As you say the menz 203s is only for removing swirls, what 'standard' polish would you recommend when not correcting/removing swirls?
WERKSTAT ACRYLIC KIT ?


For giving just a 'quick' clean what would you recommend, something like Chem Guys wash + wax or just stick using megs gold class. Then a good detail maybe once a month.

After polishing with 203S you can go straight to the protective product, whether it be a sealant or a wax (there's no need to do both). A good non-abrasive polish for occasional use would be Poorboy's Black Hole Glaze, as it will enhance gloss and hide wash marring very effectively. I see Natty's Blue Paste Wax was mentioned above... on a budget this is a top choice for red paint, and works a treat over the Black Hole Glaze. In contrast, Werkstat acrylic works best on cooler coloured metallic/pearleascent finishes, so I'd stick with a wax finish if I were you. No reason to change the Gold Class if you like it - it's a very decent shampoo. :sm4:
