...to a 1.8TQS Avant. :)

How much do these go for nowadays? There's a distinct lack of them on eBay and Autotrader atm.

Circa 2k seems to be the average price on ebay.

I had my eye on a really nice black avant only last week on ebay, which also went for 2k.

i think youre more than ganstah enough to drive an estate pedro. do it

is quattro worth it though? i dont think id bother tbh

Your trading off some extra weight for better traction. Its a close run thing i'd imagine, but i think i'd prefer to be able to put the power down than have a car thats a few % more nimble thru the twisties. Plus the Quattro cars do have better rear suspension which is bound to help.

One thing i really like, is the ability to put the power down effortlessly while steering. In a FWD if you nail it out of a T-Junction you just light up the wheels and go nowhere, in the quattro it just grips and goes. Much more satisfying.

its hardly a powerhouse. id go without the extra expense, extra mechanical drag and potential gremins. plenty of cars have more than 150bhp and people survive just fine

quattro would be a waste of time imo

as for lighting up tyres... theyre pedals, not on off switches. i cant see any point having quattro on a 1.8t

I seriously prefer the rear styling of the saloon over the estate. The rear lamps on the estate remind me too much of an A3, not as nicely integrated as on the saloon. Personal choice, I guess.

In all reality, when my A4 become available, the rear view was one of the deciding factors:- I had fond memories of driving an A4 on Toca Touring Car Championship on the PS1, I loved seeing those brake lights come on! Good times.

I guess for me the extra space in the boot would be great for my dog so it's more practicality than looks. Am I getting old? :D

Also I've never had an AWD so would like to try one. I don't think I personally would notice the difference, but those extra 30bhp might have a subconscious effect. :p

I know what you mean about the extra 30bhp.

Mine is the only 1.8t (150) I've ever driven, I'm dead worried that some time I'll drive somebody elses and it'll feel better than mine.

Black 1.8T quattro vs yellow 1.8T FWD.

Not sure if they're both AEB... I mean there's no such thing as a factory AEB quattro. Either way, the quattro wins.

The quattro will be a better spec assuming your current car is pre facelift. I would say the quattro sport is the top of the line in b5 A4's untill you get to the s4.

quattro didnt win in that race, they were two different specs!!

My thought's exactly Matt82

Quattro will be able to put the power down better in lot's of situations, but let's face it, do we all drive on the limit every where we go? doubt it, least not to the point where a 4wd car would make any difference to your daily drive.

Buy the best you can find would be my advice, 2 or 4wd

Having had both, there is a marked difference in handling and ride on the quattro over a 2wd.

The 2wd to handle has to have the susp reasonably stiff to keep the body roll to a min and generate some physical grip whilst still being complient enough to handle bumps, the quattro manages this much easier due to its independent suspension.

The 2wd i had would have seen a std S4 off without problems, and shortly i aim to have a similar power to weight to an s4 with my 1.8t. Quattro is not neccesary , but it's nice to have, lol

The extra 30hp in the TQS is simply there to offset the extra weight.

I dont agree that its not powerful enough to "need" quattro. Dawn refuses to give the car big licks out of any junctions because whenever she does it jsut ends up lighting up the wheels. I suspect its partly to do with the being turbocharged, even if you pull away gently and apply the power gradually as you turn, the turbo still tends to come in with a bit of a kick and it breaks away. A quattro would just go.

FWD cars really are crap.

Not to mention the improvements when the weather gets bad.

I have no quibbles having my FWD over the Quattro. At the speeds you light the tyres up it's not worth worrying about, I'm quite happy to do without the extra weight and transmission losses. I took my A4 round Bedford Autodrome last year with 180bhp and at the time Eibach springs on stock 16" rims with Pirelli P6000's and I was all over a Golf R32 who had to move over to let me pass.

Now RWD A4 would be interesting.

no. 4wd is crap, unless you have hundreds of bhp

im over 300bhp and it makes my s4 dull as ditch water to drive. i can totally trust that car to my 23 year old girl friend and she drives it will all sorts of odd shoes on.

4wd is for gays unless you have huge bhp, and 180 really does not warrent 4wd.

you MIGHT, (big might) manage wheel spin in second in the wet leaving a tight corner, but itll spin for a moment and thats in

in the dry it wont spin in 2nd

if the wheel spin in 1st is enough to alarm you then you should be thinking twice about driving fast if thats off putting enough for you

180bhp+4wd = total waste of time

Its not all about the 4wd, it's to do with the suspension layout. I can corner the TQS harder on almost std suspension with "only" 180 BHP than i could with the 2wd A4 on coilies, decent ARB and Parada spec2s with Racelogic traction control.

However, i am not gay i like my 4wd.

The 2wd would wheelspin in 2nd easily when exiting a corner, the fact you "over 300BHP" car doesnt wheelspin surley proves it has a place?

Dull as ditch water?

I was in craigs the other day and its anything but dull. Just because its not scrabbling around for grip or tailsliding about doesnt make it boring...

You can concentrate on the road and making progress rather than spending half your time fighting with the car as it scrabbles around trying to find traction.

I would hardly call a car dull because it is easy to drive and will go round corners and still be comfy. No 180 is not a lot of power that warrants quattro but when it snows i know what i would rather be driving. If you want a raw performance car that is fast and like a go kart an audi is not the car for you.

100% its dull. you dont do anything more than point it and shoot it. there is no excitment in that, i would barely call it driving. i drive my s4 like driving miss daisy, there are no thrills to had other than occassionally floor it for the novelty of a sedate estate barrelling down the road at warp factor 7

i agree with old red eye. find the best you can. fwd or gwd.

if youre getting excessive wheelspin in a 180bhp a4 then you must have big issues with your driving style. i had a B6 pd130 with close to that power and didnt have rampant uncontrolable tyre shreading wheelspin and that had huuuuge torque

as for my s4 not wheelspinning, its because i dont drive it like a tool and it simply doesnt have enough power.

I do like quattro's ! Its very re-assuring in bad wheather and if you have under 350-400Nm of torque and 200 Bhp i reckon its wasted- especially if you drive on motorway and in town traffic. But, if you like to drive like a lunatic in bad wheather then the quattro has its own virtutes. I had driven loads of cars and i find quattros very safe and good at what they do- rather boring at times... I use my quattro to tow on ocassion, i also drive it hard on motorway and i do like to chuck it in the bends just for the sheer fun. A rear wheel drive might be better fun but the quattro gripps and grips then it lets go but its easy to keep in check !

Well Matt, a year older, a year angrier. Soon you'll be shooting children with an air rifle from the safety of your living room. :p

I was going to stay out if this because I couldn't be *****.......BUT........and I quote "4wd is for gays unless you have huge bhp, and 180 really does not warrent 4wd"......Mate, hazard a guess your the same age as your girlfriend. I am confident in saying that because of the hilarity of what you have gone and written. The front wheels of a FWD car have to 1. PROVIDE THE POWER/PULL. 2. STEER. 3. BRAKE. These are all massive tasks from the cars perspective. Thats why a bod in a white coat that graduated from Tech Uni sat down once upon a time and contemplated this. The solution is rear OR four wheel drive. Its logical because it breaks up the tasks/burdens that the front axle/wheels have to take. Thats just 100% logic. Whether you like it or not Matt.... As for your 300bhp fwd, that thing cannot be producing anything near that at the wheels or it would be torque steer and wheel spin city. What are you doing for that not to happen? Getting out of it and pushing it from standing/at junctions? Regardless of driving style with your claimed power figure you are going to get torque steer AND wheelspin when you plant your right foot and the car comes on boost. And EVERYONE plants that foot in an aggressive manner at some stage in their driving days/weeks. I am qualified to say this as I have owned/tuned a LOT of front whee drivel force fed cars. Even with thousands spent on suspension and suspension components, tyres, brakes, bushes, LSD's etc etc There is going to be a degree of the above mentioned to some extent when you get anywhere near 250-300 bhp. The simple cure? rear wheel drive or four wheel drive. Regardless of power the advantages of these layouts are HUGE. Audi dosn't put a Quattro sytem in their SUB 200bhp cars as gimmick mate. Do you honestly think that someone hasnt sat down and thought about this? I can visualise their new company slogan now "QUATTRO. ITS FOR HOMOSEXUALS.......ON SALE NOW."

I think phoenix v6 quattro has summed that little debate up perfectly,if the quattro version of my 1.8t sport avant had been available for a sum I could have afforded at the time its pretty obvious that I would have been stupid not to have gone for the quattro, having had a a6 2.8 quattro before.Anyway this all started from pedro asking how much they were selling for!!

My car, a 2.8 Quattro (30v) is probably bang on (or there abouts) the 200bhp mark(Milltek system, removed cats and and slightly tweaked the intake system) Not particularly a powerfull car, but I can still (very much so) feel the massive advantage of it being a four wheel drive. Never an ounce of wheelspin even on the hardest starts, fantastic grip on aggressive cornering and apart from a slight dose of knocking diff (now cured with some sikaflex 252), not even the tinyest bit of bother from the system. Hands down winner. It really is a no brainer between the fwd and quattro.

I use my car to travel 4000 miles trips every year to my home town in Romania. On the way the quattro behaves fine especially in rainy days on german autobahn's. When i enter Romania, i need to drive trough Transfagarasan Pass (the one Clarkson, Hammond and May featured last summer on Top Gear!) and then quattro cames into its own on the twisty roads... Those roads are soo demanding with steep gradients higher than 12% and hairpin bends wich give FWD cars a very hard time as they tend to run wide and there are uncomming traffic wich often cut the bends. The last bit of grip is needed so you dont run into the ravenes down below... Also i travel winters when the snow its quite big and without 4wheel drive you will get stuck every time you stopped the car. For me quattro and appropriate tyres is a winning combination in every way with very few drawbacks (hauling all that extra weight for example !).

i got as far as that and gave up. im perfectly aware of what the front wheels on a car have to do and theyre perfectly capable of handling 180bhp unless you have serious issues with your driving.

the only thing the S4 gains with 4wd is a bigger yawn factor, but i was clearly wrong when i hoped it would be a drivers car of some sorts.

i'd better get myself a boyfriend if thats the case................still its better than selling my quattro

nothing wrong with a boyfriend

back to the subject. back in the day i must have had at least three (that i can remember) B5s with diesel lumps, non quattro. there was nothing wrong with how those rode etc and like has been said, its not the pinacle or sporty so i dont think 2wd would be a big loss (i can understand the benefits independant suspension) but at the cost of having quttro? id have 2wd personally

That is the first decent / well consructed post i have seen from you being put across as opinion rather than fact in quite a while, welcome back !!!

FWD are only reliable up to the 200bhp mark, then its issues with wheelspin, torque steer etc. Example- Astra VXR! 240BHP and proven **** car to drive on track or aggresive etc.

4WD will be so much more sedate from 2-300BHP because it can handle it better, wether or not this makes the car a better driver etc is really down to personal choice of the driver and his/her driving style!

Pros and cons to both sides really!

As for the "gay" Quattro comment, i could see the point if you were comparing a RWD to 4WD, but wouldnt consider a FWD car to be more "manly" to drive than 4WD, i'd say the FWD would be more boring. Cant accelerate into corners, out of corners etc, and i mean on a track, not down to Maccie D's on a "Appenin nite wiv the ladz!"

for clarity, FWD is also known as "wrong wheel drive". 4WD is "gay wheel drive". RWD is just RWD

its all down to personal preference though. there are loads of fantastic fwd cars and visa versa.

It may be "gay" but it works. Audi introduced the A4 Quattro into the BTCC in 1995, it did so well in '96 they added huge weight penalties to 4wd cars, and in 97 banned 4wd all together...

I'd rahter have gay wheel drive than wrong wheel drive ;)

This thread is so funny.. the original post only asked for a price guide and you've all turned it into some kind of sexuality debate lol.

300HP FWD FTW IMO ;)

Well said Lee, I suppose you could own both a fwd and a quattro, but there again it might confuse your sexual preferences even further, lol.
