Update on tapping noise

by the way it only smoked while this problem started, no smoke beforehand

Only just saw this - Mine smoked like an absolute whore when I bent my rod. Not just out of the exhaust, but also out of the oil cap (thats when I suspected it was bad...).

Anyway, my rings were 100% fine when I took them out. No signs of wear.

Top man. i think i will pass on the new piston rings and order the oil pump. Audi wanted £120 inc VAT, euro car parts £68.50 plus VAT and the manufacturer of that pump is MEYLE. They informed me its a good manufacturer so i think i will order that today.

Am i cheeky in asking the garage to give me some sort of warranty of rebuilding my engine basically? They seam miffed off because now i will be taking up space in their workshop and they thought i wanted the job doing asap at the cheapest cost which is not the case. I want to rebuild it right as i plan on keeping the car

Not at all. I expect they'll say they can't warranty the parts they didn't supply - i.e the rods. But the bottom line that they put it back together so there should be a warranty on the work.

MAKE SURE THEY KNOW that, when they do the rods up with the ARP bolts they need to use the assembly lubricant, and do the bolts up to 55 ft/lbs (IIRC) 3 times. This means tighten to 55, slacken off, tighten to 55, slacken off, tighten to 55 leave! This must be done, and does comes in the fitting instructions for the rods I think. But if you tell them, then there is no excuse.

If they get a bit fruity about it, then say exactly what you said above. You want it done the way that you are happiest, as you plan to keep the car.

Bottom line, the customer isn't always right, BUT, the customer is always the customer!

very philosophical today. :zen:

Ordered all the new bits now so i can settle, i informed the garage that they will be a 7 day wait for the parts and their happy with that. Ill also inform them of the method of tightening the ARP bolts up, thanks for that Welly.

Going to enquiry when all the work is complete about warranty on parts they fitted etc, fingers crossed the parts arrive asap and my car can get back on the road

Cheers guys for all your help, learnt a bit on engine compenents through this experience so far

I PM'd you a link to my rebuild thread, since that's pretty much what the garage will be doing, thought the photos may be of interest to you.

How much did it set you back to restore yours with all those new parts in it Welly?

I think the total bill came to about £1400 mate. But that was just parts obviously, all the work was done by me.

Bear in mind though that I had to buy a complete new engine on top of everything else, as the APY block was damaged.

what is the next job after this work is complete? big turbo etc? you must be hanging onto the car like me. Other people are saying repair it cheaply and sell but i cant bear it with the money i have spent on it! all suspension done (bilsteins, springs, top mounts) apart from ARBs, uprated barkes and pads etc
i love the car too much to just sell it

K04 Hybrid for my S3 mate is the plan. That yellow one has been nothing but a pain in the **** since I bought it, and yet I still love it to bits! Damn my sensitive nature...

I'm working on another project at the moment, and hopefully the profits from that will finance my hybrid conversion. Thats the plan at least!

the garage phoned me friday and said i needed new piston rings so i said go ahead and order them and fit. Just had a thought this morning, is it worth putting a new cambelt kit or just a new timing belt on while its in bits? All timing parts were replaced 20k ago and the belt looks in good condition

Hey? Surely they've got the head off to do this work yes? Its the easiest way so I would of thought so. Either way, the belt will of been removed to remove the head or drop the crank. Any garage who would be happy to refit the old timing belt gear deserves to be shot on sight!

Yes, new belt kit. Deffo.

Alright Welly

The head is completely off yes, so a whole new kit and not just a belt? I have bought new ARBs too, is this ideal opportunity to ask them to fit these while most of the engine is out? The front ARB i dont fancy doing myself, the rear sounds easy

Yeah, you may as well get them to fit fit it whilst it's all apart to be honest. It's much easier on a ramp than it would be at home!

Put a new kit on. After all this work, would you really want the tensioner damper to go for example and shag the belt, and consequently your head, for the sake of £120 from Euro Car Parts?

Noooooooooooooooo, I don't think so!! lol. :icon_thumright:

Garage quoted me 8hours work for the top of the engine, 6 hours to do the bottom end (fitting con rods, honing and new piston rings, big end bearings, oil pump, oil strainer fitted).

Ringing them mid week as there working on it when people cancel etc as they are bombed out with work! Not looking good to get it back this week, but well shall see. They said they would inspect the waterpump, cambelt tensioners etc to see if i need new ones. The timing belt will be definitely be done though

Oh and they said the ARBs will need to be discussed once all the engine is done, so i will be ringing them wednesday. Been a long dragged out story this so far but at least it will be done properly

UPDATE: Car has been put all back together but the garage said its low on power, everything is running fine, no warning lights etc. He informed me its likely to be a sensor, could be anything really and will let me know as soon as its ready.

Looks like im going to have to do the ARBs myself because they havent had time and are fully booked

by lunched you mean, needs replacing? It went in there working! ha ha

I wont be letting it leave the garage til im happy its running normal

Got the car back Friday and cost £1400 for all the work done. New piston rings, forged con rods, big end bearings, oil pump, oil strainer, cv boot fitted, 20 new tappets. Car is running very nice, they said dont rev it above 2750rpm for 500 miles and then drop the oil and change the filter. My windscreen washers are not working now so its going back in for that sorted and the fitting of a front R32 anti roll bar. I fitted the rear one myself in no time. The front anti roll bar looks more invloved.

After 500 miles can i give it some more revs, what are peoples advice for running aengine in?

Sorry been away, Lunched as in eaten itself yeah, lol

Well they are kind of right, but on a turbo engine to help it bed in it really needs to see some boost to bed the rings in properly or it will be a high oil burner.

Some one will be along i expect to explain this better, but thats how i understand it.

Does it boost?

yes it boosts fine, im only tickling the accelerator but it feels like it wants to pull hard. i have done 200 miles in it already

Modern engines are best run in by driving the normallly using the full rev range but not labouring the car unduly, if you take it ultra gently you will actually do more harm than good as there will be insufficient pressure to fully expand the piston rings will lead to glazed bores and high oil consumption. This was a problem with the early VAG 16V engines in the 80's/90's those that were driven hard from the off were much better for it than those that were cosseted for the first 1000 miles. I'm sure those with more knowledge than me will confirm for you.

not sure what to do now! whether to open it up after 500 miles once the new oil and filter are on??

Had three new engines fitted on my Subaru, by Subaru. Always take it easy for the first 1000 miles, then gradually open it up by using the rev range more as you put the miles on to it. I did mine in stages, 1000 miles then used another 2000 rpm, only opened it up fully when the oil and filter were changed.
