Tomorrow I'll be picking up a 2.0 TFSi that I've purchased. When viewing I noticed the rear "2.0T" badge had a red "T" instead of the silver T I usually see on other A3's.

Just wondered if this is purely cosmetic difference or is there some meaning behind it?

I think it is fairly obvious really.

They have run out of silver ones, and found a box of red 'T's floating about

Dont really know for sure but this is what I heard about mk4 golf tdi's...

In the 1.9 PD you had the 105 bhp, 130, and 150 (or something like that). The 150bhp version had the D and I in red. The 130bhp had the I in red, and the lesser 105bhp had the whole 'TDI' in silver.

This is rumour tho lol so could be completely wrong. If its right then maybe the 2.0T has 2 different power versions? Or maybe VAG had some extra red paint laying around?

You genius! lol

I'm sure the Golf GTi's had a similar thing going on some years ago too.
GTi's with red and silver T's.

Why is nothing ever straight forward with VAG!

The GTI had the 2.0 naturally aspirated which had 'GTI' all in silver, and the 1.8T GTI had the T and I (or maybe just the I) in red. Apparently. lol

Sooooooo...................

Apart from 'they painted it red' and 'they ran out of silver ones'... does anyone KNOW why some T's are red and some silver???

nope the golf 150 had all red TDI in it the 130 had red TD and the 105 had red T in it :)

red T gave you 5 more HP. No joke! It was on the 2006

Is that:

NO JOKE = I'm not joking, or
NO, JOKE = nah, I'm joking

??

I did read somewhere that they offered a "hot version" which was slightly more tuned/powerful. They gave this one a red T instead of silver. Apparently!

Nope, the red T has nothing to do with power! I have a mate with an A3 quattro 2.0T (red T) with 197bhp and mine is an A3 FWD 2.0T (silver T) with 197bhp....

tcardio - where did you get your info?

I own MY car :lmfao:

....that has a badge on the back that says "197 bhp"?? :tocktock:

What colour is that in then??? :lmfao:

Seriously though, are you quoting those power figures from parkers or somewhere like that??

I know it ain't all that important, but you know how it is when you get a new car, you wanna know all the ins and outs of it.

ALL 20TFSI of that vintage in stock tune are 197bhp.
The colour of the `T` makes no difference to bhp output.

Have no idea why the badges are different, I do know it has nowt to do with engine spec.

Yours will have 250bhp when you get yourself to the local REVO guy anyway, so who cares.

This is the sort of thing H5djr would know, hes a bit of an oracle on these little details.

Cheers
Paul

Ah well, it was nice while the possibility existed!!

Ain't seen h5djr around for a while now, where is Mr. Elsawin when you need him!!

When I had my 8L 1.8T Quattro it was of the 180BHP variety - same engine as the Golf Anniversary. The T badge was red on mine and the standard 1.8T (150bhp non-quattro) A3's had a silver T.

The Mk5 Golf Diesels also had something similar going on - the GT TDI (150bhp i think?) had a red T on the TDI badge...

Aythree, your 2.0T - is it a quattro? The red T as far as AUDI are concerned may point to the fact the car is quattro - although you'd think that was what the quattro badge was for...

I had an 06 A3 2.0T Quattro manual special ed and it too had the red T.

I agree with the above and would say I'm fairly convinced the red T has some relation to Quattro equipped models...

Just an opinion but it was something I always wondered so if someone in the know has the answer I'd be interested to hear!

Translating the London Lingo :sorry:

Just to feed more data into the mystery, my 2001 Quattro T had a red T too :eyebrows:

Mine is not a quattro, so the red T doesn't indicate that.

Ask the dealer??? Might as well ask the missus, probably get more sense!

LOL

If i remember correctly, on my golf the red letters would denote the type of engine you had. so if it was just TDI it was the 130 bhp and if its the TDI its the 150 bhp... something like that.
no idea why Audi would want to bring that back now though??

OMG Seriously? why are you guys even talking about this for so long? just ask the dealer! LOL

LOL - thats a good point. Sure the guys will end up doing this if it bugs them THAT much .

What are the chances that the previous owner just added a badge with red T?
:nyah:

Mine's a quattro and does not have the red "T" - although I think it deserves one now that I'm running a Bluefin map. ;)

My 2006 A3 was a 2.0T and my 2007 A3 was a 2.0T (silver). The only difference between the two was that the 2007's engine number started with BWA. Can't remember what the '06 engine number started with.

I'm quoting that from a dyno sheet!

Possible, as it looks better in red!

With reference to your mate's "red T" car, see below quote:

Here's my return email from Audi of America regarding the Red T( no joking this time):

Thomas, thank you for contacting Audi of America. If you are referring
to the badging, or nomenclature, on the exterior of the cars, the red T
was used for some turbo-charged models, like the A4 2.0T. The red was a
design decision, as the most striking color to use for the T.

Again, thank you for writing; if we can help in any other way please let
us know.

Well it certainly must give an extra 10bhp over the silver T....

(On a serious note: Mine has a red T by the way)

the PD150 actually had all three in red, the 130 DI in red, and PD100 all silver. But the PD115 also had a red DI. That was on the Bora, on the Golf PD150 its more confusing.

On VAG petrol engines however it has no bearing at all.

This is correct... Pre 2007 cars had the Red T on the back and post 2007 have the Chrome T.

With regards to the Mk4 Golf GTi badges they meant nothing. The dealers fitted them when they were PDi'd before delievery and there was no set requirement, just whatever that dealer fitted at the time. :)
