Coolant level once again

Im having the same trouble with mine and have it booked in to an independant specialist next week.
They dont think its the head, but possibly head gasket.
Anyway, they're doing pressure test of system plus various other things leading to eventually taking the head off if nothing else is identified.
They'll then send it for pressure testing to see if its cracked - if it isnt then a skim and new gasket etc and it should hopefully be sorted.

I'll keep you updated on progress if you like.

Cheers

I can only account for my situation but my cooling system seems to be pressurising itself to the extent that after a drive there is no coolant in the bottle, when I then take off the cap the coolant returns in to the bottle (at a lower level than it was when I set off).
So you could take the cap off the header tank (to ensure system isnt pressurised already), make an accurate note of where the coolant is in the header tank, take it for a reasonable length test drive, then recheck level of coolant in header tank.

I'm sure someone will have a better method but this should give you a starter for ten.

So am I the only one with a 170 having these problems? The other people in this thread seem to all have 140's.

I have a slow coolant leak from my recently purchased 2.0TDI 140 2004 Sport. I have put some dye in the coolant, but have not tracked down any external leak so far.

I have spoken to the local Audi garage, who say its probably either a suspect EGR cooler, or head. They suggested replacing the EGR cooler first, then the head if the leak still persists. They wanted 150.00 to carry out a overnight pressure test, so you can imagine my response to that….

Question is, has anyone ever seen, or found evidence that the EGR coolers do leak. I'd rather try and replace the cooler first, and then think about a porous cylinder head if replacing the cooler does not cure the coolant leak. Third option is a dose of K Seal, but I'd rather have the leak fixed, rather than just masking the issue with a temporary fix.

Regards

Antony

I bet you what is actually happening is the crack in the cylinder head is pressurising the coolent system which is forcing some of the coolent out of the over flow pipe in the coolent tank or letting the water in the cylinder and then blowing it out of the exhaust system. I had the exact same problem on my car 2 years ago before the head cracked completely and hydro-locked the engine.

Well my car is at the garage and I had the dreaded call today....cracked head.
******.

Mine is there now. Had a call about 20 mins ago to say they have pressure tested the coolant system and found no leaks. So they want to keep the car in over night as they are going to start taking bits off to investigate further. She mentioned taking the manifold off? Any idea why?

I've got a Monza Silver 59 plate A4 Avant S-line 2.0 TDI 170 Quattro to play with in the mean time. Its loads quicker than the 143 they gave me last time!

I've tried dumping the clutch from standstill and it just sticks, no wheelspin at all. My first time driving a Quattro car. Come at a good time too as I've got a trip to Gisburn Forest planned tomorrow night with the Mountain Bike and its got 3/4 of a tank of diesel in it already for me to abuse.

When I was on the phone to the garage (an inde) he mentioned a method or checking the head.
I wasnt paying that much attention as was still reeling from the shock of being told I needed a new head :-(
I do remember some thing about lining up TDC, taking a valve out and pressure testing, then something about coolant squirting out of the valve. Also the colour of the bore was a giveaway apparently.

If you want I can get the actual method and better description when Im down there to pick it up - guess this could be useful for others too??...

I have an SLK 200 courtesy car...nice for the sunny weather we're having but disappointingly my Audi is quicker!

It wont do any harm to let us know what they did to diagnose yours.

This is the A4 I've got. I quite like it

Right.

Well the car is sat in bits. They've found a leak in the cylinder head. The parts should arrive at the start of next week. Might get it back next Tuesday or Wednesday.

The garage have been very good, rang me with updates and friendly and given me a nice courtesy car so I have no complaints in that respect.

How do you get a leak in the cylinder head? Is that not caused by regular thrashing from cold? I am quite religious about making sure the oil is warmed up before giving it any stick.

well ive got my car back now...along with the bill...New cylinder head, water pump, cambelt etc...ouch!!

but on the plus side they have
1. regassed my aircon (which wasnt working at all - they informed me there wasnt any gas in it at all...not even a little bit!)
2. fixed my dodgy key that wouldnt lock the car, only unlock,
3. carried out a service which was due so service light is cleared
4. washed it and hoovered and cleaned the inside so its like a new car now!! (I think theyve even hidden a new air freshner in there somewhere)
oh, and they put a new keyring on my keys too advertising their garage.

First time I've ever used this specialist but will certainly be going back as the service they have offered has been brilliant.

what did they charge if you dont mind me asking, PM me if you prefer? And who did the work?

Should be getting an update later today on how its going and whether I'm getting it back tonight or not.

if only i stumbled accross this forum before i wated £6.5k on mine. Nothing but trouble, worst car i ever owned and stand to loose a nice chunk of cash on it now. 55 plate 2.0 tdi POS. How can AUDI's have this many problems, it clearly is a crap design....mine is now sat on the drive and wont start at all....really hacked off with it!!!!

Its not put me off mine. I'd still buy another as long as it was in warranty. Wouldn't touch one out of warranty but that goes for most cars!

thats rediculous??? who wants a car that is prone to breaking down even if its covered under warranty....you'll spend hours / days of your time and fuel taking the thinkg to the garage to be repaierd all the time just cause they skimped on the costs and design in the first place. I think its a joke that they get away with building such crap sticking a decent badge on it and selling it for more than a KIA.

This is the first and last audi i ever own. my E46 325 did 201k miles with no major faults whatsover...just routine maintenance...now that was an engine.

i'm just amazed how many reported faults there are with these things...i have an S2000 and use their forum a lot and very few reported mechanical fauliures of this nature, just people enjoying the car....this seems to be a forum of despair (not a dig at anyone at all - just seems that most threads are reported problems with what is supposed to be a decnt car...should have done my homework).

Looks like this little spisode is going to cost me a few £k for what can only be described as a pain in the ****!

Its not like its in the garage every week or even every month. When I have the car it drives fine, its quick, it looks nice, lovely place to be sat and its never broken down on me or let me down. Anything else its been in for in the past has only been things that I've had done because its under warranty, like a bulb in the dash going. If it was out of warranty I'd of just left it and not bothered or had a go myself!

If I was forking out for this repair I'd be despairing as I'm sure it would cost a lot but as I'm not paying I'm not going to worry about it. Has made me think about extending the warranty for another year though depending how comprehensive the cover is and how much it'll cost.

Also costs me nothing in fuel to take it to Audi, the Audi garage is 1 mile from my house and I drive past it every day on my way to work. So its not really any inconvenience to me... I get given ok courtesy cars in the mean time too...

Still waiting! I'm not 100% sure what the total extent is of the parts they are replacing or how long it should take but if the parts turned up on Monday like they hoped ready for Tuesday that means its been in the workshop for 2 days?!

Maybe the parts have been delayed. Going to call in tonight on my way home and have a chat hopefully :)

perhaps more bits fell off it....annoyingly they seem pretty secure, i would start leaving mine in rough neighbourhoods hoping someone would steal it, but i have enough trouble getting into the ****** thing with the key!!

I called in and its got around 4 hours more work left on it. I didn't get to speak to anyone in the workshop to find out the details. Hopefully will do when I pick it up.

Got talking to my mate whilst I was there and going have a look at a 170 TDI Black Edition that they've got coming in on demo in a few weeks time... maybe not a good idea as might well end up wanting one. He reckons the new A3 is coming out next year too? So may wait for that. Not sure yet.

Not sure what they have diagnosed with yours but mine took a week for new head, cambelt change and a couple of other bits including diagnosing and ordering parts from Audi (including a cylinder head which you would HOPE they didn't have on the shelf...if they keep them in stock might be a good arguement that there's a design fault and hence warranty should be irrelevant if it comes to failure).

Sounds like they're taking their time over yours!

I've got it back. Christ its fast compared to that A4, everything feels really sharp. Makes the A4 feel heavy and slow! I haven't got the bluefin remap back on it yet either!

Its had a new cylinder head and head gasket. The guy I spoke to said they found an internal leak on the cylinder head at the inlet? And the top of the pistons were stained white from the coolant. The cylinder head is a modified version of what was on it so that implies to me they know its a problem if they have a revised cylinder head out... thats all I know.

Modified version my *** ! Mechanics don`t half talk some ***** .

Yes much like the modified version of my coolant filler cap they fitted... that looks identical to the one that was on there before!!!
