Evening all

I'm from the S3 side of the site and posting on behalf of a friend on here who can't jump online yet.

He has an A4 2.5 V6 TDI. He said there's a ticking noise coming from the engine on idle. Also, whilst he is driving the ticking noise gets faster as he speeds up.

Any ideas what it could be?

Thanks

Jay

i have exactly the same thing, comes and goes but fairly obvious when present. first noticed it after i replaced the cam belt and water pump. loudest from passenger side

Dont' know id its of any use, but I had the same problem a couple of weeks ago. I was on a longish journey, and stopped for a cup of tea. I heard this ticking noise on idle and getting faster when accelerating. I called the AA as I didn't like the sound of it. It transpired that it was actually a misfire ( or a no fire!) that was being caused due to water in the affected injector's diesel line. Cleaned the line repleced the fuel filter, and all has been well since.

If it is easy enough i think these are v6 engines can you take off the cam cover for the drivers side and check that it is well lubricated and no signs of ware if thats not poss then off to a indy for inspection.

very easy job to inspect the cams, just remove fuel lines from pump to injectors then the leak off hose from injectors, then lift the rockers. checked mine all looked good and i have the chocolate cams, 2001 ake or as i like to call it 2001 ache. :tumble:

An ancient post I accept but know there is a pile of knowledge on here. How do you clean a line?
I have loud ticking after changing my master injector today. It did die down a little bit when I took it for a hard drive but came back towards the end.
So annoying as I just sorted the injector problem.

I've replaced all my return lines - fuel filter and thermostatic valve and I have the same ticking which I think
is lifters or injectors.

What injectors did you replace and why and was the ticking present before?

Also are we talking return lines being cleaned or supply?

I replaced the master injector as it was throwing a fault.
I don't think there was a loud ticking before I did the work. There is no way it was very loud like I found it afterwards that I can be sure of.
Good news is it has died down quite a bit.

I popped it into a local garage earlier for them to listen too. They used a stethoscope to check it fairly throughly and they conclude it's ok and maybe just a sticky lifter after I had left the cam cover off for a week.
Hopefully they are right.
Will change the oil this week and see how it goes but over the moon if I have fixed it.

On cleaning the lines the above poster had mentioned doing it but not sure how you would or what they meant really. Would be hard to do?

I've heard of moisture getting in through old return lines - these are typically a quick job to replace (mine were awful as very hard/aged).

I'll be interested to hear if the ticking settles down - I have the same and suspect tappets/lifters and I've tried everything oil flush wise to free any potential deposits (lifter treatment/diesel in oil/engine flush/2 stroke fuel mix) - the car runs spot on though it's just the ticking is annoying and a concern.

If you could keep us posted that would be great.

Ticking has gone away now ... it seems to be running much more sensibly now. That's the good news.
I had the oil changed by a garage this morning as I don't have a ramp and at the same time the diesel filter.
The mechanic took it for a drive and thought it was a bit rough.
I took it out and it definitely has a vibration under load. (At any speed, but only under acceleration)
I have replied to another thread on here about this to see what thoughts people have on next steps.
But as mentioned, much smoother running ... at idle at least

Glad it's sorted.

So was this the needle lift injector changed? And was it with a new or old/refurb one?

It ticked (actually banged pretty load) after needle lift injector changed but did settle down after a day or so.
I suspect the top of the engine was maybe starved or oil a bit while it had been worked on and cam cover off for a week.
Once that had a bit of time lkus the oil changed it seems to have fixed itself.

I changed it for a used one from ebay. They are nearly £300 each and eurocarparts had no stock of the lucas one that is around £170

Hope it helps

OK Cheers - I have a spare set and hoping to find a good injector to swap the 5 to see if I can identify any of them being bad, but if the spare needle lift one is bad I'll need to get that rebuilt or replaced (well if both are bad).
Just handy knowing others experiences as my searches has suggested the needle lift sensor injectors are often problematic.

The needle injector throws the code when faulty? Although guessing gunked up might not throw a code necessarily.
I am still having the starting issue so doing the glow plugs next. I hear they are fun to get out!
