Anyone watched Wonders of the Solar System with Brian Cox ?

I didn't watch it, but find it hard to believe we live on the only planet capable of supporting life, War of the World's, it could happen

Hope not but some friendly aliens would be nice, well until the Americans capture them and start testing them relentless!!!! Then it would be war of the worlds..........

I've been following the series, I love how exciting he finds it all, just wish I had intelligence to get my head around the math.

I doubt we're the only inhabited Planet, but unless other life forms developed far earlier than us, the chances are mankind will be long gone before any transmission arrive

Things can only get better ...........................................

do you think any planet had the resources to reach another galaxy to find other life even if they had the tech to do it ???

Yeah I watched it & I'm fascinated in a non geek way about the solar system & space in general & have been since was a kid, lets hope jupiters gravitational pull doesnt shove an asteroid our way just yet or we're super fecked huh.

I'm not sure, the rate at which technology is progressing is super fast relative to how long we've been here (ie the first few thousand years there was no progress really) the 20th century saw huge leaps, so if this century does at the same rate who know's what will be possible.

It is difficult to get your head around though, the thought of space being almost limitless, where is "space" itself?? contained within a jar on someone's shelf in another world? lol

Thats exactly how I think about it, ok if there's a god, who created him & so on so on, also where did space come from, it does your head in I tell yer.

LOL it does, it makes thinking beyond this planet incomprehendable, we pretty much know nothing about space and when you start talking about it like this you end up sounding like a lunatic but it is a possiblity; there must be an end to space somewhere but if not then it defies physics as we know it. And if there are limits to it (however far away), what's beyond it? is it plasterboard painted stain black!?? lol

lmfao, yeah it also becomes kinda claustrophobic if you get me the fact that space maybe is a big bubble, lol, although its bigger than any possible comprehension possible by any being, I mean jupiter can fit 1000 earths inside it, thats mind boggling huh.

For all those 'Men Behaving Badly' Fans out there:

Tony:" Space... The final frontier... Makes you think, eh?

Wouldn't it be weird, if it wasn't the final frontier... If there was space, and space, and space, and space, space space space space space space space...

And then suddenly... Milk.

Going on forever...

Then it would be "Milk. The final frontier."

Yeah that space thing does my head in as well. Thinking about it too much makes makes me feel a little ill; like sitting on a swing for too long does.

Another thing that hurts my brain is the whole... my mum's mum, my mum's mum's mum, my mum's mum's mum's mum, and so on....
It goes on forever!!

I know some will say it started at monkies, but even thinking that at one stage I had a great great great great great great **and a few more** monkey grandma skooting through trees also makes my mind boggle!

Monkey grandma lmfao got me chuckling away, thats a good analogy, lol.

Whats annoying is the knowledge & experience gained by all these people that have died & will do, just disappears into the abyss, be cool to able to bottle as such all this, if that makes any sense at all, such a waste huh.

Things can only get better ...........................................

That's exactly what I have going around in my head when I watch it lol!

Interesting program though and he's definately very passionate about it.

maybe we do sit in a jar somewhere, what a scary thought! Hope we dont get knocked off the shelf!!! Hard to believe he was in a band lol, hes soooo clever but sooo down to earth! Love the subject but gives a headache if you think about it too much!!

Its not the technology that's preventing us from contacting others or receiving martian texts, its the distance.

Radio waves travel at the speed of light, and even though that's not hanging about, it will take centuries for any transmission to cross space in either direction (four light years to Alpha Centuri and that's our closes star)

Personally I think that's why man invented religion.

So much easier to get your head around

Saw the one with the solar eclipse.Strange that the moon is moving away from earth but we are at just the right time for it to be exactly the same size to us as the sun.Was this all planned as millions believe every thing is ?Chaos theory seems much more fun butterfly wings causing hurricanes seems impossible but how to prove that?

ha, i am watching this on sky + as we speak !! love it

i used to go to bed at night pondering the idea of the universe being infinate..(yes i am a sad ****)

doesnt make sense.... but surely if something ends, there has to be something on the other side of it, so it cant just end...so it must be infinate..but thats incomprehensable...you get the point

******* frys my head i tell thee

yeah but it is incomprehensible....and the most annoying thing is, i will NEVER know the answer....

man, is it just me and you on here tonight sarah ;-)

I don't think that, if we ever do know the answer to these questions, that many generations after us won't ever know either.

If that makes sense - a bottle of vino makes this hard work! lol

Your not alone
As I said religion's the answer
No need to ask any further questions about anything more difficult than what color socks you are going to wear today
The bible takes care of the rest
Simple's

really ?

It's been very good, and very factual :)

As Gilly said ... "REALLY"? Then my whole life's perspective has been wrong

Yeah course, so simple huh, I mean religion has solved so many problems in this world huh, lets see if it answers all these questions aswell, good call:icon_thumright:

You're basing what is and what isn't possible on what we know now - you can't foresee what may become possible because it's difficult appreciate or comprehend what may be possible in the future. Only just over a hundred years ago it wouldn't be possible to fly around the world in about 48hours, less on fast plane, it would have taken months. Only just over half a century after planes were flown man landed on the moon.

We can laugh now at the thought of some kind of teleporting device or speeds unknown to us now but just like people once though the earth was flat etc you just never know.

I'm not religious in any shape or form

Both Creation or Evolution takes some believing

Creation would have us believe that God did it, thats it, no more questions, no head aches and no interesting theories voiced at late night parties after some mind bending drugs.
Problem is with creation is that you have to have complete faith in there being some divine force capable of building the known universe in 6 days

Evolution is equally difficult, we start with nothing, well maybe an energy source, then in steps Einstein with E=MC2 and Bobs your uncle, were here, well almost.
Just several billion years of a lump of rock being bombarded by asteroids, solar radiation, meteorites, water forms, single cell life forms form in some prehistoric sludge, after several million years of inbreeding one omeba decides he'd prefer life as a fish, and his great great etc uncle thinks it would be great to walk on land etc etc

All by chance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As I said I don't believe in Creation, but, Evolution really does hurt you head.

Certainly not a laughing matter given its been & being worked on at the moment & has been for years, success in some parts but obviously not on the human scale of things as in Star Trek, but its certainly possible, but as you say its the particular time in the human races evolutionary stages, that would determine our technical abilites that will allow us to be able to do these things.

lmfao I like the way you've put this, I really do & not with any sarcasm from me this time, lol, well versed.

But, I still dont believe in bruce almighty, problem is my evolutionary belief also does your frigging head in as you rightly say, trying to get your head around that can turn you insane, really does & the thought of the universe being a bubble, as I said before, feels kinda claustrophobic even if its infinite for our field of vision if that makes sense.

Space, Evolution, Teleportation, The Big Bang, etc etc etc...... all simple. I'll answer any question on those.

But Flash Forward... I'm having trouble with that.

Hmmm, well let's not get started on religion too much or I'll start my infamous rant "How did the Catholic Synod turn its head for so long that a Nazi ended up Pope!" Fact, don't contradict or my replies will prove it. It's all about the Cardinal Sin of "Oppression of the Faith" and Hitler Youth - of which Ratzinger was an proven, active member. Makes one re-evaluate whom Nostradamus was warning us about! Anyway, various elements of the Evolutionary theory are impossible as is "Genesis" unless every including Adam & Eve had 68,000 kids each!

I start to panic when I try to quantify where we are: everything we know is measured. Here we are in England - on this Continent - on this planet - in this galaxy - in this nebula - in this universe --- erm ... erm ... erm ... ? Truly scary as to where we actually are and how insignificant we are, practically if not atomically.

And teleportation has already been achieved with ions; hasn't it? I'll get back to you on that one.

Yes some kind of teleportation has happened but I don't think it's real teleportation as we imagine, more deconstruction of something and replicating it elsewhere, but even so real matter like people is still way off and still sounds very much like Star Trek, but as I said we can't comment on what the future holds.

Absolutely fascinating viewing, is there life out there??????

the universe is flooded with life, its a know fact, but the elite folks at the top don't want you knowing that, Should anyone go out and expose the massive cover up then they just get blasted a "conspiracy nut job" or get a bullet in the head! both options are not very comforting for them that do know all about it,

I will give you something to chew on,

Inside your body are tiny little live cells just doing there job to keep you alive, every now and then some of them turn bad on you and make you ill, your body then has a choice to kill the cells off or let them kill you,

Is the human race them cells but on the earth?

Is the Earth a cell in a bigger body?

Is the universe just one cell of a much bigger universe?

Are you really here or are you just consciousness having an experience in the matrix?

:readit:

OMG!!! I've got a headache now!!!!

yeah well, i still cant get my head around what was filling the void before the universe was created, and what was there before that...as there couldnt have been nothing...but at the same time it had to start somewhere...but then something had to start it.....another unanswerable question than serves to keep me awake at night when i have nothing more interesting to muse over...
