I've decided the Sony head unit in mine has to go.
It's so out of place. I want my autochanger back and working, but i want mp3. So RNS-E seems the best option.
I've had a look around and they seem to be sat nav too. Is this correct.
I assume I'll need a different cage unit for the double din and a different climate control unit which sits lower.

I have Vagcom, so can do the nessecery there.

I got my RNSE of Ebay just be cautious about who you buy from as most are from germany even if they say UK on Ebay.

I think PJMSpeedy can get them for about £450 so you may wanna drop him a PM. I didnt need VAGcom to fit mine as its pretty much plug and play if your car is already double din.

Also when you buy the RNSE check the model number as this will tell you how old the unit is and if its an A4 model eg :
8E0 035 192 C Audi A4 Europe, MY 2004, 8E B6
8E0 035 192 D Audi A4 Europe, MY 2005, 8E B7
8E0 035 192 E Audi A4 North America, MY 2005.5, 8E B6
8E0 035 192 F Audi A4 North America, MY 2006, 8E B7
8E0 035 192 G Audi A4 BNS 5.0
8E0 035 192 H Audi A4 Europe, MY 2006, 8E B7, with SDS
8E0 035 192 J Audi A4 North America, MY 2006, 8E B7
8E0 035 192 K Audi A4 Europe, MY 2007, 8E B7, sw 0500
8E0 035 192 M Audi A4 BNS 5.0
8E0 035 192 N Audi A4 Europe, MY 2007, 8E B7, with SDS
8E0 035 192 P Audi A4 North America, MY 2007, 8E B7
8E0 035 192 Q Audi A4 Europe, MY 2008, 8E B7
8E0 035 192 R Audi A4 Europe, MY 2008, 8E B7, with SDS, sw 0650
8E0 035 192 S Audi A4 BNS 5.0
8E0 035 192 T Audi A4 Europe, MY 2008, 8E B7, sw 0650
8E0 035 193 Audi A4 Europe, MY 2008.5, 8E B7, with SDS

Most of the RNSE`s on Ebay come bundled with the other bits you need to make it work but make sure it has : the GPS antenna, Stereo removal keys x 4, Wiring loom adapter, an Audi map DVD (as new as poss and preferably an original disc).

Lastly if the screen looks scratched (the anti gare coating wears off) this can be sorted so if you can get a cheaper one that this has happened to you can buy some Meguair PlastX (http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/engine-amp-exterior/meguiars-plastx/prod_283.html) i used it on mine and it looks as good as new now.

Hope that helps

bob, you could do with pluging in to vagcom if you get chance mate, some bits would deffo need coding, speed sensor etc would need checking etc do you have it all coming up on your dis, audio through the correct side etc.
would be worth plugging in to check all mate.

Yeah i do wanna plug in with VAGcom as it still software version XX which i know means it has been hacked. Although i had no idea there was that much you can play with in the RNSE will defo need some guidance.

It dislays the radio/mp3 track on the DIS but i dont get any sat nav directions on there which i know you can from reading others posts. But i thought this maybe because i dont have full DIS yet.

I also think the RNSE thinks i have Bose as it wont let me adjust some of the audio settings i can see in the manual. My VAGcom cable should be here next friday so will try and have a go then.

I have loads of jobs on the list for when the cable comes and i am off on Holiday for 2 weeks Sunday so will be a busy boy. So heads up for Friday/Saturday as i am sure there will be some urgent requests for help once i start playing with VAGcom :)

Stick a dvd with FW 650 in & do a forced FW update with use of vagcom & this will install 650, as I've had to do before on a unit I bought with XX showing at current FW version, did this months ago & to date not a single issue & shows the correct data in the Info section for the RNS/DVD info.

i have an original 2008 maps disc and a copy of 2009 which seems to work ok.

So i guess i put the maps disc i the RNSE and then use VAGcom to make it do a firmware update?

Cheers chaps! I'll start putting a few pennies away then. I suppose if i go back to a oem style radio. It's be rude not to have steering wheel controls too?

I'll start getting the bits i need together soonish. I assume I'll be needing a double din mount and a different climate control unit. Are these hard to come by. I saw the mount on ebay at 50quid. Which seems abit steep.

1wheel's your man for this, it's well outside of my knowledge range! But my understanding is that the existing cage (assuming you have double din already) can be trimmed to allow the same climate control unit to just sit lower down.

single to double din requires a new double din cage ( £50 is about right ) you dont need to buy a new climate unit, the one you have needs a few mill trimming off either sides and slots in below the rns-e perfectly ( you were close james ). an easy mod but allow a couple of hours to complete, its not a two minute job.

if your going down the route of multi function steering wheels ( assuming you havent already got one ) then you need to find what module and slipring you have, plus whilst your there you might aswell add cruise control. lol so yes get saving lol

I've already got a rns-d, would I be able to plug and play with a rns-e?

I currently have an L module, which i beleive does support MFSW, but i have a Q as well incase. I fitted cruise control and DIS last week, whilst having a play.
So i just need to get a double din cage (currently running single din) and trim down my climate control.
I'm sure i can manage this fine.
Then it's the expensive bit.

I'll probably be doing that at a much later date, cheers for the heads up though.
Saving time!

Started reading through and thinking about which to get. I've seen one ending in T will it work in my 2001? I am abit lost tbh!

explain yourself a bit more matey, whats ending in T module, rns-e ??? more than one subject has gone on here lol if its the rns-e ending in T then yep thats fine, theres a list been posted at the top of this page by VRBOB

Yeh the RNS-E, Sorry being abit useless lately! I've got my eye on one. So fingers are crossed.
Sorted my heated mirrors today too, fitted a heated mirror and now they work. Grand!

Yeh, worries now that its no good. Please tell me its ok.

you wont loose out mate, clean up and relist them, seperately, youll probably make some, put towards the CORRECT ONE !!! lol i know some one whos got some a3 rear lights, are you interested lmfao

Strangely enough, I was just browsing ebay. Saw a A6 Allroad rnse and it's different to that one, the width of the unit at the top is alot wider.

I wonder!

wait till it comes, i can see what your saying, providing the guy used the actual one in his listing picture ?????

Well yes, very valid point! But he does talk about how you can't see the scratch on the screen in that pic. Not that its not the actual picture.
AS you say, wait till it comes. When you check the pictures. It does seem very much A4 style.
Also the A6 one doesn't has a chrome bar under it, but the one ibought does. I do hope its the one in the pic! lol

I saw that Bob, apparently its like a 4hour job for someone whos done it before!

4 hours thats alot so probably better off flogging it and buying an A4 one then, Hopefully you will be lucky and it will be the right one this time.

It takes a while to remove all the parts patiently, its not for faint hearted, but certainly not impossible, taken them apart many times.

It is an option then! I can't help but think, it looks right though!

nige, you were my example. remember reading youd done the chrome nob conversion for people and it was a big job.

Had it confirmed the one in the photo IS the one I'm getting.
