What Tyres to get?!

I've just bagged myself a set of 18" RSTT wheels to replace my 17" Avus on Ebay for £250 - thought that was an ok price seeing as they're going for quite a bit on some auctions (plus they're in good condition with only a few kerb marks).. Now my question is what tyres to get and where to get them from (as the tyres on the set i bought are obviously knackered!)?

I've been looking online and etyres and Kwikfit (when you buy online) seem to be the best value. Does anyone know of another place to get tyres cheaper. I need them fitted as well so if i did order the tyres from a online tyre store (without fitment) i'd then have to get them fitted somewhere - do tyre places get funny about fitting tyres that you haven't bought from them?

Also what tyres to get? I'm leaning towards Pirrelli P Zero or Michelin Pilot sport - is it worth paying that bit more for the michelin? I need 4 so am looking at £500 fitted pretty much - £600 for the michelin.....

Any help would be appreciated!

Try camskill mate, the number give you for local fitting ring them, they often beat the price given by cam skill ;)

Heard alot about vredestein, some good reviews! I think its essential having good tyres mate, its what keeps you on the road ;)
 
mytyres.co.uk or blackcircles they also tell you where they can get them fitted. I tend to phone up my local garage and say the price I can get them at and he normally beats it so once you have a price might be worth phoning about. Goodyear Eagle F1's are a popular choice, 225/40/18 £116.40 on mytyres fully fitted for £506.52 on blackcircles.com
 
As FazS3 said try camskill for online purchases and with regards to the vredestein's (ultra sessanta's) I paid 78 for 17" and once scrubbed in (they need about 300 - 500 miles) they are awesome tires, esp in the wet.

I paid a local tyre fitter £10 for each wheel which included balancing and new valves no issues that I did not buy from them in fact they said vredestien are quite hard to get and added to M3's as standard also.
 
Cheers guys, Blackcircles are really good - much cheaper than either etyres or kwikfit. I hate kwikfit so was trying to do anything to avoid them! Goodyears look nice too - i've got pirrelli's on at the min (on 17" avus) and they're pretty crap understeering readily - but they are almost at the end of there life...

I might ring local garage to get a quote - but haven't found a good one yet - last local garage ******** up the balancing so i had a nice vibration at 70mph - blackcirlces recommend a 5 star one by me though so i'll try them out...

Any other experiences with brands would be good......
 
I've got goodyears on my 17's there good alround dry and wet weather. I had some part worn avon ZZ3 on the rears which lasted a long time, I'd gone through a brand new set of F1's on the front before the rears needed changing, this is possibly because they were on the rears so its hard to say how these perform up front but they wear well (and have a V tread too) and only cost £95.57 a corner fitted on black circles so you could put these on the rears and a set of F1's on the fronts. My brother has 18's on his alfa GT and he had P zero rosso's but they wear quick. Toyos are great in the dry but not so good in the wet and wear quick too.
 
Pirellis, Contis and Eagle have always done me well in the past, so can't really add to the above.
 
I looked into the best tyre to get a little while ago, the general consensus was that the eagle f1's were the best all round tyre
 
eagle f1s are an absolute classic

your tyre choice will depend on your budget too, but there are loads of good tyres to recommend out there
 
Which F1s as their are 2 versions... I have the GSD3's which are good but am thinking of trying Assymetical ones once their dead. Can anyone offer a comparison between the F1 GSD3's and the Assys? (they don't make the GSD3's anymore)

Eagle F1 Asymmetric 215/45/17 ('99 156 2.5v6) - Bought to replace the GSD3s that I have always been a fan of. Easily the equal of the GSD3s in the dry, quashing as much of the understeer from my nose heavy Alfa as is possible without an LSD. In the wet they are significantly more confidence inspiring that the GSD3s. Have yet to find out if they last more than the few months the GSD3s used to though!

Eagle F1 Asymmetric 215/45/17 ('03 Impreza WRX) - Also bought to replace the GSD3s that I have always been a fan of. They are excellent in the dry and the wet (when you really need grip) and they are significantly quieter than the GSD3s that I've always used in the past.

You can still get the V tread GSD3, I have them on my fronts I have the assymetics on the rears, couldnt really compare thou, car seems to have plenty of grip, in the snow the rear would step out but the haldex would kick in and straighten up with ease.
 
Goodyear eagle F1 assymetrics, great grip wet or dry, road noise is pretty negligible IMO and mine have lasted quite well. :icon_thumright:

Have you had the GSD3's to compare to? And how many miles roughly you had out of them so far?

The Goodyears seem to be the popular choice on here, i can't help looking at the little more expensive Michelin pilot sports though. They have good reviews online - i'm pretty interested in grip more than anything else - although a tyre that doesn't wear too quickly would be nice. Does anyone have any michelin experience?

Splash the cash on some Michelin Pilot Sports, awesome tyre in the wet or dry!!!
 
Pilot Sports are very good, never had them on my Audi but have them on some cars at work and they're excellent, they get properly pushed and they're nice and steady.
 
Goodyear eagle F1 GSDs 3 on mine, the second set i have had and are awesome in the dry and wet. Mytyres.co.uk are the cheapest i have found, definitely would recommend and last well too

We had Michelin PS on the RS6 for a while. Not bad but two punctured on the motorway with no known cause (nail or other). Went back to Rossos and not had any issues since.
 
I have asysmetrics atm and only done about 6000 miles and they are in need of changing already. They have gone off bit to soon for my liking. Think I will be trying SP3's only just come out.
 
ive got 4 pirelli p600 on atm with 1 needing changing,****** screws at work! i eventually want some eagle f1's or asymetrics ,
so my question is, should i get another pirelli and wait until all 4 need changing, or get 1 odd one .. suggestions please
 
Michelin PS2's are a really good tyre running them at the moment i switched from Yokohama parada spec 2's which are also a very grippy tyre but i only used to get about 10k out of a set. Im hoping the the extra outlay on the PS2's will yield a few more miles and make the extra worth while in the long run. You might not get the PS2's now as they have been replaced with the new PS3's. I used to pay £105 a piece fitted for the Yoko's, i spoke to my local tyre place recently and he told me the new PS3's are gonna be £137 each fitted which is as cheap as i could find online and the same sort of price i paid for the PS2's last year.

How much tread is left on the good 3? Is it a front tyre? Does your car have quattro?

Very keen to try some after my eagle F1's GSD3's which if I'm honest I haven't been overly impressed with. Yes they grip well in the wet or dry but I don't feel 100% confident with them, I hear the compound on these are more sticky... Prob won't wear as long but for the price you can't complain!

Never had any GSD3's so cant tell you how they compare, what i can say is i originally had michelin ps on the front and since i put the assy's on the car seems to have slightly more front end grip ie less understeer although if pushed its still there. Mileage wise the rears have covered about 10k and are starting to look like they may need changing sometime soon.

Firstly lol at the punt.

Second, run flats are atrocious if you have mildly "sporty" suspension. All friends and colleagues that have had them fitted as standard on their BMWs have removed them instantly or specified their cars to come without them.

The PS3 is not the new PS2. They're both sold next to each other ;)

Anyway, i prefer also the PS2 and Bridgestone Potenza RE050A.
Both best tires in their catagory.
 
i've just bought a couple of michellin ps3's after previously having the ps2's. Theyve got great reviews in the new audi driver mag which has tested them very recently. The only thing letting the ps2's down was the wet grip, something theyve improved with the ps3 apparently greater then the goodyears which were the benchmark. Not cheap at £125 fitted a corner but you gets what you pay for and my ps2's lasted around 18-20,000 miles
 
Rav, that's damn cheap where did you get the PS3's from? I have the original PS on mine and they were £135 a corner two years ago.

Never heard of Uniroyals before but will consider them to... The consider list for when my F1 GSD3's wear off are:

F1 Assys
Proxy TR-1's
Uniroyals Rainsport 2's
Michelin PS3's

Hi mate, got them off blackcircles, and plus my old man gets an extra 5% discount by being a teacher!! every little helps! (remember mine are 17")

Cheers guys, will probably stretch to some Michelin Pilot sports if my bank balance will allow - picking up the RSTT 18's on Sat - gonna look Suweeeet!

Just looked in my boot. When changing the wheel it says something about putting a plastic screw thread where the locking wheel nut has been when taking the wheel off - does the locking wheel nut need to go back into the same thread then? I've not experienced this on any other cars?
