Petrol in my diesel

Oh dear!
What have i done, rushing around trying to sort fuel out before I have to be at the station.
Didn't realise I'd picked up the green pipe. (driven a petrol all my life, filled this one up less times than i have fingers)

Put in 38 litres.
About 3 miles from home, so my dad nipped over with a 30litre drum and his petrol car. I disconnected the feed hose to the filter, and put a hose on that into the drum.
I ran a wire from a live to the live on the fuel tank pump and put a earth on. This then pumped the fuel tank till the drum was empty. Then put the hose into my dads petrol car (why not lol) and pumped till it would pump no more.
Pushed it over to the pumps and brimmed it with diesel.
Reconnected the pipe work and ran the pump to flow the system round abit and it started fine.
So i reckon there is about 6 litres of petrol in my tank now.

I know this isn't great, I'll try and get hold of another 30 litre drum. Pump 30 litres out and fill it up with diesel. Then when shes empty, put the 30litre back in with new diesel.
Or i might just leave it, I'm still not 100% convince 1 lot of petrol will be doing any harm for this once. I'll be making a trip of about 80 miles on sunday and I'll fill it up to the brim after that again.
Then the 80 miles back I'll brim it.


Any thoughts, please no scaring me lol

6 litres in a tank of diesel will make no difference or do any harm at all to your car
carry on regardless you have no reason to worry with that small amount of petrol .

and apparently, putting a small amount of petrol in there will clean out the system so im told

just keep topping it up over the next few weeks with diesel and you won't have any problems, in fact, you can add a few quid of petrol to help clean injectors every now and again with no problems :icon_thumright:

I think it's only common rail diesels which will do mega harm with petrol in .... ?

I hope you charged your dad for the unleaded

I wouldnt introduce it on purpose ,
more so with common rail diesels due to the high pressure components
petrol has no lubrication properties where as diesel has lubrication property to lub all moving components
i think the percentage is around 5% but its better to be avoided in modern diesels

You can mix petrol with diesel up to 50 % in a diesel VE engines...thats what we do in hard winters in eastern europe to stop diesel gelling. It will start badly and smoke a lot but it will run. The new low sulphur diesel is bad for the injector pump and nozzles as they wear out quicker. Its not a bad ideea to throw a few cupfulls of low ash mineral 2 stroke oil to aid lubricity every once in a while.

So am I right in assuming that the v6 isn't a common rail? I'm new to diesels!
It did start badly this morning, but I'm sure it'll be fine.
Need to get rid ofthis 30litre drum of fuel now. I think there may have been a drop of oil in the drum

A drop of clean engine oil? Or dirty old oil? A small amount of clean engine oil will be fine :icon_thumright:

The V6 TDi is not common rail no.
