Hi can anyone tell me whats the best oil to run my 1.8 A4 B5 non turbo engine on?

wanting to top it up & also service next month

thanks

I used to use Castrol Magnetec 10w/40, but the last few times I have been using fully synthetic 5w/40 from the auto-factors. I believe its made by Carlube, and its much cheaper than the castrol and in my opinion just as good. So its either 10w/40 or 5w/40, its what I would reccomend anyhow.............

PLEASE DO NOT LET THIS START ANOTHER SH*T BORING DEBATE ABOUT THE LIQUID GOLD...............

+1 on the Carlube 5w/40 fully synthetic. I think they call it 'Type R' or something like that.

From memory I think it was about £22 for 5L from Euro Car Parts and seems to do the job nicely (although I've only done about 650 miles so wouldn't expect it to be stinking yet). It'd stick with crisp 'n' dry for your chips though :)

Regards,

Rob.

Yeah thats right, £22 for 5ltrs! Thats pretty good (Euro Car Parts). There are actually 2 different types, the "R" stuff and the normal stuff. Both made by carlube. I just went for the normal stuff. I have now done 3000 miles since changing it, and its doing pretty good!

To be honest, my engine (2.8 ACK) is using exactly the same amount as before, which is approx half a litre every 1000 miles. Its done 130,000, and I am told and have read that it is completely normal for the engine to burn that amount of oil. And my engine is a healthy engine!

Only asked because I've heard that some engines, used to running on mineral based oils, can consume full synthetic at an alarming rate

I hear this all the time too, but i cant help thinking its a load of tosh.

5w40 synth is the same thickness as 15w40 mineral once the engines up to temperature.

The only possible way, would be if the engines knackered and is being held together with sludge and crap. Synthetic oils tend to be better at cleaning the insides of the engine, so could remove this buildup and cause it to use oil.

I also use carlube 5w40 synth (the normal stuff). Usually costs me around £10 a gallon in maccess.

I use Mobil 1 0W-40 the same engine but mines Turbo...don't do many miles though paid £39.99 for 5-Litres..

I think the main point with these engines is Fully Synthetic...the make is your choice..

I'm doing an (overdue) oil change this afternoon. The above mentioned Carlube amber nectar and appropriate filter for £18.31 with a bit of Euros "trade discount".

And free usage of a two-post lift.
