Hi.
Soon im looking at either refurbing all 4 of my avus wheels or upgrading to a set of rstt's.

As they RStt's are 1" bigger do they effect ride/handeling much?
I have also heared the suspension is -10mm on s3's fitted with the 18's... is there any truth to this?.

If anyone has got a pic of before and after fitting rstt's to an s3, it would be appreciated.
as i was hoping it would fill the arch gap slightly.

regards.
Callum

Lower profile tyres will make for a harsher ride on anything other than a decent road surface as you dont have as much tyre soaking up the bumps. However when I put my 18's on I'd gone up from 16's so I dont know how much harsher it would be from a 17 to an 18 if that makes sense?

defo firmer, not a million times different but seem to offer better handling...the RSTT's are apparently the best compromise between 19's and 17's - do the maths as to why :)

i wouldnt go back to avus personally - but then the cost of decent 18's is different so depends on ya budget

Get the 18's. They look far better. 17's look dated IMO...Too small.

Slightly firmer ride but not by much. Better turn in. Depends on the roads you drive

Hmm, I think i like the design of the avus's better (the fatter spokes) but i would like 18's as when spaced out they suit the s3 perfectly.
Just a shame the 18" avus reps are so rare/ expensive :(
Are tyres much dearer in the 18" varient? as i like good tyres.

With the correct sized tyres they'll both have the same rolling radius. Less tyre depth will = slightly bumpier ride however.
The ride with RSTTs is fine though.

Late model S3s supplied new with the 18" RSTT option had what's known as the gmbh suspension upgrade. Jury is out as to how much of a drop it gave, probably an extra 10mm.

Edit: 18" tyres... I'm just about to put on a full set of Uniroyal RainSport 2s (uber-grippy buggers)... £106 each from mytyres.co.uk.

18s for the summer, 17s for the winter.

Best compromise

ugh... I dont fancy changing wheels once a year lol.
JS i had rainsports on my old car and they were awesome..I may look into this gmbh suspension if i do find some rstts.
I dont want to alter the vehicle too much from standard, but if i fit the wheels using my current suspension will it sit like a tractor?

I'm in the same situation - ride heights the same i've been told. Not sure if i can deal with crashy ride all the time - potholes after the snow are a nightmare! Is the difference in handling worth it?

nope mine looks fine :)

Agreed...

My S3 on 18s isn't too bad at all, bump-wise. Much better than my old A4 on 18s and actually almost as smooth and comfortable as the A4 on 16s!

Lookswise - it'll look fine on standard suspension and RSTTs. If you want it a bit lower without spending too much then you could seek out a set of gmbh springs & dampers (although most people wouldn't know what they had, I guess) or just get some 20mm lowering springs like Eibach's for about £155.

Tuffty, What suspensions on in that pic?.. the ride hight looks perfect!

Bilstien B8's and Apex -30mm springs... 10mm spacers on the front an 15mm on the rear, KW tie bars

Tuffty...

what wheels are you running? OE's or RSTT's?

I'm opting in for forge 15mm rear and 10mm front on my Standard AVUS wheels.

Edited to add i can't see pics in work lol!

They are OEM RSTT's... I also still have my Avus's which have my snow/winter tyres on

EEEk, Just rang Plymouth Audi to see if i had the gmbh suspension/ to see how much it would cost to upgrade.
Around £150 per corner for shocks and springs!!..
However, the parts guy just to me to upgrade to Bilsteins unless im an idiot lol.

Also, His friend who works for Exeter Audi has an 8l s3 "apparently" running over 600hp!!! who coincedently uses bilstein.

:iagree: Billy's are definately the way forward!

Whats ground clearance like with the Bilsteins?

Seems a bit low for me but im an old man deep down lol

Very good, usual rules apply with speed bumps of course... much better than my A4 on coil overs...

I need a passenger ride in your car tuffty, really want to know how hard it rides with those Apex springs, and wouldn't mind a bit of push in the seat feeling whilst you are at it! lol :racer:

Precisely how mine needs to look. Few months it'll be there (no point waste decent Tyres at the moment!).
