Drilled Air Box

Interesting read this gents. But for me, this car will be staying pretty much standard. My old Clio was the modding victim with my massive PiperX Viper IK, brap innit ;) Comments about leaving the car in 2nd and flooring the poor 1.2 sounds familiar . . . :S

Great to see what is basically a mod of the OEM parts!

Matt whats is the venturi???...yep ive also de meshed the maf.:)

venturi, looks like a trumpet, it flares outwards, but immediately before the flare it narrows down to increase velocity of incoming air. my S4 airbox doesnt have one at all from standard, yours might not either

Oh right, yeah it has it mate, you reckon i should take that off then?.

doing all mine now... its missions without a dremal! smoothing these little bits left from the maf mesh seems savage! hope it sounds good after all this ball ache!

i would also like to know to leave this trumpet thingy on or off!?

When you lot talk about the trumpet I'm assuming you mean this:

I left mine and still got gains.

what about a custom trumpet! lol (excuse the pun)

gotta be better than the smaller bore o/e one???? dunno?? anyone care to get mathamatical??

PS my smoothing aint finished yet!!!

I think im going to get better gains when i fit a green cotton panel filter. So far mine is smoothed with de-mesh MAF and 4inch air duct!..:D

im nor sure what filter is in mine. its thae same material as my Apexi i had on my scooby, just in panel form and blue!

i have made the intake hole bigger too and a few drain holes. De-meshed the maf also
SDC10847.jpg

i have some flex that i have squashed into a ovel that i will attach the larger intake, will run an induction pipe to the front of the car :)

do i need these bits tho???

cheers for the inspreration!

The MAF mesh should just pop out mate rather than cut it.

****** hell mate you've gone to town there!

I tried to push the mesh out of mine and it didn't budge and I couldn't be bothered to cut it out. I heard somewhere that the mesh actually helped to keep a stable flow of air accross the MAF sensor. Not sure how true that is though.

mine would not push out either. i have a spare maf so aint that botherd if it goes tits up! I will see how it runs in a bit, sure it will be fine as alot of people have removed there mesh also!

just came back from a little play. A3/S3 owners this is a defanate to do mod! After the first couple of mins the car sorted its self out (as i can only assume it got a different AF reading to normal) There is a deffanate "induction roar" to it now and it hissis when toeing it! feels more responsive mid range for sure! as westles results show it hold the boost higer for longer, (i was still pulling at 5k when its normally dieing here) DOnt get me wrong, it aint no remap but a definate gain to the over all response of the car!!

5 stars to westle!!

Cheers mate. I like to try any mod that's free and I thought as I have VAGCOM I might as well so some pretty graphs. You cant moan at an extra 2bhp and 7 more lbft of torque for a few hours work :)

Also now that you have no finger tips the police can't track ya either! its a win win!

Well as I needed to take the airbox out today (to fix my rear wiper wash pipe as it was not working & pipe had come apart which is located under the airbox under some plastic trunking) I removed my 'trumpet' in the airbox. (The plastic after the MAF inside the airbox) Not sure if I can notice anything yet I'm not sure I will to be honest but it certainly hasn't made it worse. (I have smoothed my airbox allready) Did have a think about de-griilling the MAF but it looks delicate to do, don't want to risk breaking the MAF so will leave that on....

Just in the process of doing this to mine and discovered it is fr quicker to simply chisel the fins off with a mallet and a decent sharp chisel. One hit has them off completely flush to the base.

Does anyone know if this sort of mod on a TDI would get any benefits ??

id guess your not gonna get a definative answer....just try it, you've nothing to lose but an hour of ya day

Just been out on a 'road test' after smoothing my airbox and removing the trumpet. Can't see a noticeable difference low down but as it approaches 5k now there is a hiss from the engine and it pulls cleaner and harder to the redline. In fact this is the first time I've redlined it as it always felt like it was struggling to get there before. Cotton filter next me thinks.

Fotty isnt on till 5.30,and my hangovers cleared now, so may just go do this too,and log it on my Liquid Gauge...

Pete..

Ok ive had a free afternoon, and ive done this, and im VERY surprised at the results!!!!!!!

On my Liquid Gauge, im now

BHP= 260
Torque 233 (bit concerned about that),
MAF 208,
Boost 19.1,
Air intake temp 29 c..

Pete.....

Have pics too,but on my iphone, and dont know/cant be arsd to put them on here!! lol

Yeah come on mate these results are no good unless you know what you had before! You might have lost power/torque :)

Man, Im missing out on an extra 2 bhp.

I'll be giving this a go hopefully this wknd along with a new DV and GC filter.

take out the fins and drill two or three small drain holes, that'll do the trick...you dont want to be sucking too much hot air from the engine bay
Totally agree! if you do drill holes make sure of a cold air feed from behind front grill via pipe so not to get hot air instead of cold! may make your car sound a little louder but not really worth doing!:icon_thumright:

I've drilled mine... One day (I'll post a video) and hope it'll help

Joe

as in proper drilled it, as in several holes.....if so what in your mind you think your gaining

I've drilled mine to (not loads about 10 small holes) as well as de-fin etc... And haven't lost performance (tried it in the summer) def pulls and holds better than std and sound great to.

in that case i stand corrected Fran....did you check the results via vagcom?

I haven't as I don't have VAG-COM, really wish I had keep meaning to get it.

Hey guy's just about to have a go at this smoothed airbox mod, and wondered if the trumpet actually comes out as apposed to breaking it out as it does'nt appear to be fixed on with screws?

Just to let you lot know I only drilled 2 new holes in the bottom of the air box in the two lowest parts. There is already one hole in the bottom as standar so I had 3 in total. Thought you might want to know as I proved my gains with a VAG-COMB :icon_thumright:
