Bought a new watch :)

Right guys...

There are two sides to this it seems...

Those who like watches, and those who don't so much. That seems pretty straightforward, and fair enough. The fact that we're now into two pages of handbags over it is a little harder to get to grips with. Both sides of the argument are equally valid - if I think about it as neutrally as possible...

Yes, £2000+ is a lot of money to spend on a watch (if you polled it I'm sure this would be the majority opinion). However, to most people £30,000 is probably a lot of money to spend on a hatchback. Some people buy expensive watches, some people buy expensive cars, some people do both; a lot of people do neither. The arguments about a £20 watch doing the same job as a £2,000 are at lowest common denominator level, also valid; but likewise so are those that a Fiesta will do the same job at lowest common denominator as an S3. Both watches will tell the time. Both cars will move people and things from one place to another. There are differences in the way it happens on both counts, I'm sure. A £2,000 watch might look better, be better specified and more reliable than the £20 item (in the eye of the beholder at least); just the same an S3 might look better, be better specified and more reliable than the Fiesta (again, in the eye of the beholder). Surely this is pretty much the same with anything? Some people spend thousands on a camera, but have a phone in their pocket which will take a photo. Some people like Baked Beans at 9p per can, others prefer the more elite Heinz model.

Welcome to the Western World chaps...

How about we all wake up and smell the coffee (regardless of whether you prefer Maxwell House or Kopi Luak (£150 per Kg because the beans are only collected after a cat's eaten and passed them)...

Cheers,

Rob.

Well, I like my watch, and its me that has to wear it so that's all that matters.
If you don't like it then fine, you're entitled to your opinion, just don't call me stupid for spending MY OWN MONEY.

If I want to light a monte cristo with a £50 note, then I will.

just don't call me stupid for spending MY OWN MONEY.

Nobody did.

If I want to light a monte cristo with a £50 note, then I will.

And if you do that and I think it's wrong then I'll say so.

If anyone thinks that an S3 is overpriced (I got mine tax free BTW) then that's fine, it's been said before and I have never batted an eyelid. I certainly wouldn't think that anyone who said so was either on their high horse or jealous as I'm not that narrow minded. What I find somewhat ridiculous here is being criticised for buying an S3 (over an Escort ) by someone who also owns an Audi. :tocktock:

OK...

One last time...
For those of you hard of thinking...

ONE MAN'S **** IS ANOTHER MAN'S TREASURE

Worry not about it my friends.
Share what you have in common instead of quarrelling about what you have not.

...And if that doesn't help everyone see the futility of this debate, I'll just indulge myself in a luxury I enjoy...

Cheers,

Rob.

PS> Hitting the report post for my swearing is not big, clever, funny, or indeed original. Ta :)

Wasn't critisizing you or your tidy S3 mate - Just showing you how stupid this thing had got! :faint:

Check your own posts, dont want to go on and on but I would like to point out one point.

I'm with the others, I also think that it's stupid to spend that sort of cash on a watch. I appreciate that it's nice to have something a little posh on your wrist for nights out but not to that extreme.

NASA took a standard Omega Speedmaster and put a large velcro strap on it and it worked fine on the moon, try that with a timex. They also took a standard Haselblad and increased the size of the operating lever and it worked fine, try that with a Sony cybershot.
On the other hand, Stirling Moss had an ex military watch that his father gave him, he wore it all the time while racing with no problems. Rolex gave him a new watch and it stopped working after a few laps.
I have had some cars in my time but have always wanted an Audi, now I am in the financial position that I can buy one. I also wear Cerruti suits.
In my line of work I attend high level business meetings and I would rather arrive in an Audi wearing my Titanium Seiko and Cerruti than in a Mondeo with a Timex wearing jeans.
Flash ba*tard I am not, but its my money, I have worked hard for it and I can spend it how I like :icon_thumright:

Haha, I wish I was that good to teach you, I had a lucky month in all honesty, won 2 comps and with my profits, I played a sit and go cashgame where there was a rich learner player who paid everyone off! He must have lost £10k in a space of a week!!

What's the ball park figure for your Titanium Seiko??

Please lets not have curiosity give rise to flames again...

PS> Not trying to be an ******** - it's just that money discussion is what kicked it all off in the first place, so I'd rather we're more cautious this time around. Money, politics and religion - the trinity of topics which are always sure to start a fight :(

There's a difference between being stupid and doing a stupid thing mate. I didn't call you stupid and I don't actually think you're stupid, but I stand by what I said.

but its my money, I have worked hard for it and I can spend it how I like :icon_thumright:

You certainly can mate, nobody has denied that.

I don't think this debate got anywhere near heated, it's simply a difference of opinion. I don't mean offense to anyone and I'm glad that some posts were from members who realise that they can choose to ignore my point of view and be proud of their fine watches. I always try to keep an open mind in arguments and if someone can convince me of a reason why a watch should be worth so much then I'd happily accept it. I understand that the technology involved in making these thing is massively intricate and the R&D and materials costs means that they are expensive to create but IMHO I simply don't see the point when a digital device does it so much better. To me it's like someone trying to make better and better analogue TVs for example when digital is already far superior.

I do on the other hand see a massive difference between a 1.6/Escort RS/Fiesta and an S3 in many ways. I really don't understand how anyone cannot see the difference between the watches argument and that analogy when you consider the different and varied capabilities of cars and the different methods of completing the same tasks. But then if you really can't then that's just fine; let's agree to disagree.

I do actually like watches, (I hope people continue to post their pics BTW) and I quite often pop into Goldsmiths when I'm in town with a mate and ogle at them all but then I look at the price and I just don't think it's worth it simply for something that tells the time.

Each to their own-but each to their own opinion.

Oh f**k. Lets not bring analogue and digital into it please... One continuous waveform (analogue), if delivered from source collection to destination output cleanly stands to be better than digital. It's just extremely difficult to do it, so digital (and its many little slices of that continuous waveform) comes close, with less headaches and on a tighter budget. ...Hopefully that's fair enough to prevent a war between the musicians/producers/engineers/audiophiles who lurk around here.

:)

Cheers,

Rob.

My wife bought it for my birthday a few years ago, it cost £150. We looked online for watches and I really liked that one, black face, gold detail. Onine RRP was £199. We visited a watch shop in the Jewellery quarter and found the same watch for £170, it was mentioned that we had seen it online and the bloke said he could couldn't beat an online price but we could have it for £150, we didn't actually mention the online price.

@A4Quattro, Neil Armstrong left his watch inside the LM becuase the mission elapsed timer had malfuctioned so Buzz Aldrin was the first to wear an Omega on the moon. Jack Swigert of Apollo 13 wore a Rolex GMT as well as a Speedmaster, but never landed on the moon. Dave Scott Apollo 15 wore a Waltham on his third moonwalk after the crystal had come of fhis Omega.
Apollo mission geek me

IMO `desirability` is the key word here.

If its desirable then its usualy expensive, and generally speaking, the more desirable, the more expensive. Each fuelling the other.

There are other elements too of course, like future value and whether or not it is an investment.

An expensive watch/car/suit isnt necessarily `better`, `more fit for purpose`, in relative terms (is a £1000 suit 5 times `better` at being a suit than a £200 suit ??? probably not) But to many it is more more desirable.
I dont think its always possible to fully justify the value of a luxury item purely on its merits, but possibly is on a more subjective level based on the `desirability factor`.

Whether something is desirable though, is down to the indivudual.

So some watches can go to the moon, desirable? yes. Over engineered? Possibly.
But still desirable.

These trinkets are the fruits of our labour, we buy the ones we want and the rest seem a bit pointless.

I dont `get` the expesnive watch thing personally but I can see why people want them.
They dont really turn me on and so dont motivate me to spend £2K+.

I have mates with 3K ROLEXs and think they are bonkers.
They think I am because Ive spent 1K making my car go faster.

(Mostly) Good thread BTW :icon_thumright:

Cheers
Paul

If you are going to use a big word, maybe you should know what it means.

You still got the link to this site, smarty pants?? Think you're gonna need it. :lmfao:

Did you know that Omega is the only brand of watch to be worn on another planet (specifically the moon)

The Moon isn't a planet, it's a moon. ;)

Haha, the clue is in the title. :icon_thumright:

And once again you have justified your signature.

Still at it I see. I'm not going to rise to your baiting again. If you think you have got one over on me, well done.

Now go and lick the windows of your super bright supportive cupholder.

OK. I'm going to prune some of the diarrhoea from this thread shortly, so please don't anyone be offended at one or more of your posts going missing.

We're getting awfully close to this though...

And while you're about Mr. One.... why does 'join date', 'location', 'posts' etc turn red sometimes? Just out of interest.

Er no reason really, a glitch. Although i have not seen it since the early stages of the upgrade, it was always following an admin post, seemed to carry on down the post

Busted. Heh.

jojo: Something like that mate. I've got a bit of time on my hands at the moment due to contract changes and TUPE wranglings; so I'm likely to be making a nuisance of myself around here a bit.

aythree: Put bluntly, it appears (as far as I can work out), that the management at vBulletin Inc. are investigating a 21st century version of the "If you give a thousand monkies a thousand typewriters" thing - basically they've hired a pool of coders for this new version whose only previous experience is writing such BBC Microcomputer classics as 'Tea Shop'.

After we upgraded to vB4 (we waited until it was out of Beta, and was released with a cheerful announcement explaining that it was tested and bomb-proof) we (everyone who bought it) found horrendous resource use and plenty of bugs. We started to fix the things that we could, but vBulletin have now released three updates (one minor and two major) for the software since it's release around Christmas. Each one of those 'fixes' things we've already fixed, and we've got to mess about to settle it down again - now it's running reasonably well, we're not tinkering any more (because it's just making more work for ourselves) and just waiting for Coco the Clown and his team in the states to dish out further updates. There's another one due out any time which will fix another couple of hundred bugs (no joke), hopefully that will be one of them!

Cheers,

Rob.

I LOL'd! You know they'd be on the phone the second you owe them a cent. It does look like they're starting to get vB4 sorted now, but I for one am exceedingly cheesed off that they sold us something which managed to make a Microsoft initial gold release look quick and stable. I think we'll be examining broader options when it's time for the next upgrade...

'll back you on that mate :icon_thumright:

 Phew! I've been involved in a good few debates about that, and I think it's fair to say it's a tricky topic to summarise in a sentence or two!

In a few years, when the time is right I'm going to treat myself to either a Tag or an Omega. And this thread doesn't help with me making my mind up! Some lovely watches :icon_thumright:
