312mm Brake Upgrade - Same pad size same surface area??

I have just done my front conversion from 288mm to 312mm. Quite an easy upgrade took me about 2 hours from start to finish...

Maybe I am just being thick... I can't help but wonder... how is going to 312 going to give better braking if the pad size is the same, which effectively still covers the same friction area on the disc?

More leverage me friend ! Caliper is spaced further away from the centre of the disc wich means you will have more stopping power for the same clamping force + better heat disipation.
 
A force applied at a right angle to a lever, multiplied by it's perpendicular distance from the pivot point, is torque. By increasing the length of the lever, a greater torque is applied at the pivot for the same input at the levers end.

So as Adam and Bill have said above, it's leverage :)

So if you add bigger pads would you still get the increased leverage?
 
Do S3's come standard 288mm then? What motor does the 312mm's come from?
