right as mentioned on the forum already ive had an issue with a light coming up on the dashboard which ive been told is either emmision control or engine management. once plugged into vag com it came up with error 17704 unknown error. after research im led to believe its a cooling issue and have been recommended to purchase a coolant temp sensor and a thermostat which i have done. however can someone give me some pointers as to how to install these and where they are? i cleared the codes using the vagcom and the light has reappeared today also its consuming a lot of fuel so need to get them installed a.s.a.p. there is also a clicking from around the washer bottle area which speeds up when the car is warm. please help

CTS is easy, follow the top hose from the radiator to a plastic 'water junction'... CTS is in there... pull a 'U' shaped clip out and it pulls out... just push the new CTS (with a new o-ring) back in the hole and refit clip.

Stat is actually more of a job... the housing is the the rear of the alternator on the engine block and is black plastic...

Top bolt is easy enough but the bottom one is a complete pig... I unbolted the alternator to gain better access but a 1/4" ratchet with 'wobble' extension should do it...

You will loose most of the coolant from the block removing the stat... you can either try draining the coolant off into a clean container to use again or just replace with fresh coolant... either way you will prop need to top it up again with G12 mix coolant.

This is just the charcoal canister and is normal...

I did my Thermo today without removing the alternator using the wobble bit as mentioned by tufftybloke and it didnt take long at all :icon_thumright:

right ive began changing bits the sensor and stat today. the cts has already been changed for a new green one but i put my new one in anyways and i noticed a breather pipe wasnt conected so reconnected that. left car sitting and it reached 90 and the fans didnt kick in, is this normal? im having a bit of bother with the stat though, the first black cover i need to take of is being a nightmare and one of the bolts has started to round. after replacing these what should i notice? temp wise etc?
cheers

also my local garage doesnt have g12 anti freeze, i just topped it up with water. is this ok?

If your temperatur rises above 90 and the fans dont kick in you will need to replace the fan switch located on the bottom left of the rad (if looking from the engines perspective) just above the rad bleeding tap. Its like a brass bolt with plastic plug moulding on the back of it, i had to actually buy a spanner to get mine off as there isnt much room for leverage and i love buying tools lol, but its easily located as it has wires coming out of it.

I would say get some coolant in there asap, car will run fine on water but get some G12 in there for peace of mind. I bought some from GSF car parts yesterday, 2x1.5 ltr bottles for £12 :icon_thumright:

I did mine yesterday and now my temp gauge rises to 90'c and stays there, stopped outside the house for 5mins waited for the fans to come on but because of the low OAT the rad didnt need them.

been driving car round all day and hasnt risen above 90 once so the fans havnt kicked in yet. temp stays around 90 so is that job done? i only replaced the cts

Sounds good to me, my fans havent kicked in either due to the low outside air temps. :icon_thumright:

Right new issue now. Started the car up and left it running for a couple of mins. Accelerated out the drive and there is a sudden loss in power and it's misfiring pretty bad. Also it's about a 2 mile drive and it's red hot although temp gauge says 70 and it's stinking. Coolant level is fine. Plugs maybe?

I have changed the coilpack and ran fine until my new issue. Please check my other thread, I suspect it's boost. Thanks for your help so far
