Guys!!

Changed my plugs last night the NGK Iridiums and the S3 was with Audi this morning for a service.

Was driving home tonight and floored it in 2nd, high up the rev range the car started popping. At first I thought it was the traction control but looked down and saw the engine light flash on and off.

It went away so, being curious, I floored it again and the same thing happend (bar the engine light)

I then thought it might be a blow out from the Miltek or worst case scenario.....quattro fault!!

Phoned a mate and he is pretty certain its a coil pack failure - never had a problem like this before as all my previous cars have been deisel.

Has this happened to many S3 owners?

How much are they from audi?

Would RAC have these available? I am tempted to ring them tomorrow morning to come out. The car drives perfectly fine low down the revs and I have turned off the Revo.

Any help appreciated

Thanks

How many miles on your car? What did a scan say? The only things I have heard of are coil pack, HPFP & downpipe issues on remapped cars.

If it was the emissions light (the engine one) then it could be the Cyl 3 sporadic misfire issue, but you will need a scan to double check. That normally happens in 3rd or 4th though, but could be. If that is the case then the coilpacks are not the issue and you will need to contact Revo. This is more likely on a 07/08 car.

Something similar happened on my A3 2.0T. Floored it in 2nd coming off a round about and all of a sudden, Blackpool illuminations on the dash. Nursed it close to home as it was misfiring/failing big time. Audi assist called, RAC came out. Took the boy 45 mins, I kid you not, trying to get engine cover off before he had to give up and call a colleague and then realise he couldn't fix it. Car got lifted back to Audi. Car was only 1.5 year old, so under warranty. I may be wrong, didn't ask too many questions, but was told it was coil pack/injector pack.

I had the same thing when i changed my plugs, it whiped out two coilpack when i got 15 miles down the road - had exactly the sam issues as you.

Coilpacks are about £27+VAT, i wuld just buy one and try it in sequence on each cylinder to see which is faulty, saves you buying all four when only one might be at fault - or scan it worth Vagcom

Cheers

The thing here is Revo. I had the same issue and had all the coilpacks and plugs swapped under warranty and it happened straight after. I am not saying I am definately right, but if the scan comes up 'sporadic multiple misfires detected Cyl 3 at XXXX rpm' then he will know for sure; in that case the coilpacks are a symptom and not the cause.

Got it sorted this morning guys - was a coilpack in cylinder 1

RAC came out at 7.20am and sorted it there and then!! Great work from the guys!

Will give it a thorough drive today to see if it happens again

Good news there mate, as the misfire is a bit of PITA. Do the RAC charge you for parts on a home job?

hmmmmm i wonder if this is some of my problem...but i dont get a engine light or a fault code AND mine drops down to 3 cyl from 6...

Might be a good idea Paddy especially for £27!!!

I have read alot of people with R32's with them giving up, so they could need the same on Audi as I presume there the same parts!

Are you out of warrenty Bodyie? One of mine failed a month ago, called audi assist and a RAC - (Vag trained) was there within and hour and replaced the coilpack with a genuine Audi replacement FOC

Yeah, out of warrenty as of 09/01/10 :(

Considering Audi Approved warrenty at £400 a year though!

Oh and did you ring me for anything specific on Sat night at 4am>???? haha

I recently had to change a coil pack on my 3.2 Paddy and when revving to a certain limit the engine management light would flash - after a few miles driving (as I was nursing it home) it remained lit permanently.

However, I've had similar erratic idle issues to you and on speaking to the AUDI/VW specialist to which I took the car, he mentioned that the coil pack couldve been on its way out for some time and could have contributed to the erratic idle.

It hasnt happened since the coil pack was changed BUT then again it was intermittent anyway and occured on average once per month/every other month...

Do the spark plugs you selected have a larger gap than the OEM sparks?

The ones I chose are exactly the same except they are NGK and not Bosch

Update! Coilpack on Cylinder 2 failed last night on the way home from work!

Audi is on the way home so called into them - they wanted a hell of a lot of money to help me out so I bought 2 of their coilpacks and another from a VW tradestore and headed home.

Diagnosed the fault and said cylinder 2 was misfiring but changed all the coilpacks to the new ones - means I still have 2 working ones as emergency spares!

Just for your information, the new coilpacks are a revised edition ending in F compared to the C versions which will probably be in the earlier S3's. Might be in your interest for those with the 2007 or younger S3's to check out.

Anyway, problems solved for now, £120 I didn't expect to spend this month but better than the £300+ audi would have charged!

So far so good and the car is behaving! Touch wood that's the problem solved!!
It's thread resurection time!

Problem: a3 18tq just remapped with hybrid turbo, 220 bhp at wheels &...coils keep popping!
Changed the OEM coils 10mths ago for bremis, developed a misfire underload just b4 the remap etc. Faulty one found & replaced, on way home after collecting my (much improved) motor, YEP! misfire developed under load.
Goung up steep hill i got an EPC light & severe limp mode. Switched off, restarted & she's off again, untill i welly it then stuttering at high revs & eventually cut out into limp. Got home fine but had to accelerate gently.

Question: will these be any good?

It's debatable if red coil packs give anything extra over the originals. The spark plugs are the same as the ones I'm running and are the recommended ones for tfsi... 2.0 tfsi at least.

Thanks leshkin. I'm trying to work out if the coils are any stronger than the reccomended e.g bremi etc etc.
I've read stuff advertised saying 'thicker insulation' and 'heavily wound coils'. Is this going to help my coils stop popping?

I would say that popping coils like you describe is not normal. Are you using OEM coils or some after-market items? I've heard of non-OEM coils being very unreliable and always stuck to stock items without issues.

I'm running the red coilpacks at the moment (https://www.akstuning.co.uk/engine-components/216-red-coilpacks.html), but it's more because I'm a tart and wanted some more colour in the engine bay. The original coils, which did over 60k miles with a thirds of that at Stage 2+ power levels and they were still going strong.

Agreed, the OEM coils lasted a long long time! I think I'll go to audi & buy the set of 4.
If the problem returns i know it's another issue, wiring loom maybe like welly posted about?

I just really really want the car running 100% after the map & hardware, still haven't enjoyed her properly yet

Wash your mouth out! Aparently the red ones make your car drive a teeny weeny bit better ...

You've been told Leshkin! Apparently the red coils are good!? Is that correct downtothebone?

So do I stick with OEM for my 'unleashed' gal, or risk it 4 a biscuit & go with the red coils!?

Thought the red ones were fitted to the R8? If so then decision made if it’s good for supercar then it’ll make that family hatch fly like that other super guy with the big RED ‘S’ ... I’ll get my cape.

Intetesting point, but i think the R8 has a bit more than red coils to thank for its power!

Still unsure - but i do like the colour! & red is faster yeah!

OK! Decision made, I'm going with the red coils, but also replacing the coil harness (as stated is necessary below).
Sparks are an essential part of a combustion engine right!? I think the red's will deliver

Still researching this issue & it's a little pandoras box!
My handheld scanner gave me the dreaded P1335 MAX TORQUE EXCEEDED code now im doubting the coils are gone!
I'm going with (cheapest fix order):

Air temp sensor replace
MAF sensor replace
TIP replace (still the collapsible stock fitted!)
Coils
Contact mapper

I've been digging around (thanks to contributors on audisport.net) & im thinking its the ait sensor, cheap & eady fix if so!
Maybe it's the asp needs switching off too, but I'll chat with tuner 1st about that.

P.s. I'm still getting the 'superman coils' they look amazing;)

P.s forgot to say codes as follows:

P0112
P1602
P1539
P1335 monitor2

1602 was battery disconnect when sitting at tuners.

0112 is ait sensor, so hoping that'll fix 1335

Anyone know about p1539 implausible clutch switch? Its a new sensor on pedal after i did the welded pedal bracket fix!
