I have been thinking of retro fitting the RNS-E in place of my Concert Radio. I called the Rep at the garage where I bought my car and he says it was very expensive and almost impossible to do!
I called in at another Audi dealer today and asked how much it would cost to fit the RNS-E to my new A3. Firstly he had never heard of the RNS-E!! Once I had explained what it was he then said it was almost impossible as I would need two new ECU's, a whole new wiring loom and the interior would need to be stripped out to accomodate the 'Motor Unit' and the Antenna!!!
Cost? would be £3k to £4k
Do these guys actually know what they are talking about or is he just trying to scare me?

There are loads of retro-fit guides and videos on the net.

It's easier if you have the double-din sized radio already, if not it's a bit more work (but not impossible).

I think they are having a laugh with you, avoid them !!

Biggest LOL i have ever heard...

I paid £450 for a brand new unit, £7 for a GPS Antenna, changed my own pins. Fitted myself!!

The motor is built into the unit, the ECU has nothing to do with it and the GPS antenna is stuck on the inside of my dashboard near one of the vents (I get 8 satellites)

Audi dealer never hearing of RNS-E???

look on ebay you can get all you need for £500 and its a 15 minute job to swap over

That was my next question as im sure there will be someone from the forum beside you who can help out

I managed to install mine and I'm an absolute idiot when it comes to electronics and cars!

Trust me when I say that if I can manage it anyone can!

I'm in East Ayrshire. I enquired at Ayr Audi, where I bought my car. Today I was in Carlisle and decided to try those guys. Was faced with a pair of incompetent idiots to say the least. I'm pretty well versed with Car maintainance and repair and almost fell about laughing at the way they were talking to me. I have spoken to the guys at OEM Retrofits and some day when I'm down that way I was going to call in. My biggest bug bear is time.

Hold on here. If your car is 2010 you will need a new Ariel in the tail gate if you want the radio to work.

Not quite true. If you have an 07 or later car you may need to fit the correct antenna system depending on the reception you receive in your area. I fitted one because I had crappy fuzzy reception which I wasn't happy with, I didn't like the ZF short to earth DTC either.

ive gone from single to double din, its not an easy job but ti isnt a hard one either, try giveing Sandemans Cars a call on 01307463483 they may be able to do the change for you if you source a unit off ebay. they specialise in vags mercs and ford jog and landrover

Then you have good FM reception in your location. BUT you will have the ZF short to earth DTC if you run a VCDS scan

Ahh yea could be?? Shame freeview still sucks!! Need a Quad antenna in my car to get any sort of signal!

But I have done a scan recently with no errors what-so-ever. Weird

I was just quoting nige. I was under the impression that the later a3's needed an Ariel upgrade. My 04 a3 has an RNSE and that is fine. best to double check as i cant be sure. i know PaulAr hasn't got his radio to work following an retro fit on his S3....

Pre 07 cars will most likely have the correct ZF/HF antenna system, this is why you have good reception. Don't know why Pauls car has issues as I'e not taken a loo at it. I think when he's got some cash for the antenna mod I'll have a job to do!
