Daisy has developed an unruly rattle.

hear past the ticking....

"F**kSticks"

Thinking Cam chain tensioner ?..... I have recently run it very close to dry a few times in the past week.. ok 5 times... Grunge and stuff unheard of that far up ?....

What make of tractor you got again mate? haha.

Seriuosly though, 5 times, how you manage that, and how dry did you let it get?

was playing the fuel light game..... go past one petrol station... then go past the next.. next thing you know your home and your Mrs has to fill it up the next day :)

Its a Audi "John Dere" S3 i think...

Exhaust manifold is loose or cracked by the sounds of it, I've had the same problem for months now.

It doesn't sound like a cam chain problem.

Ooooo id love for it to be that ! Easy to access ?

In short, no! Access to the exhaust manifold is very tight, there's a lot of stuff in the way. I'm getting mine sorted hopefully this week, it sounds terrible at the moment.

Paying a garage to do it ?

Mind PM'ing me with the cost ? so i know what to expect if it is :)

that sure dont sound like a manifold..

that sounds like lack of oil pressure

very common on 1.8t engines were the oil pump strainer gets cloged up with oil gunk,

built up from lack of oil changing.

its like a metal mesh were the oil is sucked thru from the bottom of the sump.

:respekt:

Has a FSH, and the noise sounds like its coming from the top of the engine..

easily recognisable as metal on metal :(

I will certainly look into it though. Thanks :)

That's making way too much noise to be a sludge related problem. It sounds identical to mine, and I've had it checked over by a specialist who confirmed the exhaust manifold gasket is blowing under engine load.

You could be right though, but for tankie's sake I hope you're wrong about it!

My A3 does this after an K03S conversion - where I was too lazy to do one one the harder exhaust manifold bolts up.... And left it thinking 'itll be OK'. Regretting it now.... lol :(

I'll have to wait 'til I get home to hear your clip but my S3 has been making a metallic rattley noise for a couple of weeks.
Definately sounds like 2 metal components knocking together as they vibrate...
Mechanic I spoke to thought maybe a loose heat shield?

Will be taking it to a VAG garage this afternoon.. Hopefully they can diagnose it :(

Dont think its the tensioner as its not uniform with the revs... more of a vibration rattle... leaning towards Heat shield/headders etc

Fingers crossed anyway

Or i though you meant you'd let the oil run dry.

Yeah mines got a faint sound similar to that but no where near as loud. Oil things a good call golf, going to get mine checked and cleaned when it gets a service saturday.

Ok had a proper look around... Defo left hand side :( Cam chain territory

Booked in for 1300 tomorrow.. Wait out

VAG Garage say its a cam tensioner pully or something in around that :( Stock £220 + VAT for belt change £275 + VAT with water pump aswell. I have the metal impeller one already so wandering if its worth it before its due?..

Hopefully the pully isnt that expensive or whatever it turns out to be ! Rapidly loosing my faith in S3's :( and this is my 2nd

Hmmmmm. I had to change mine and got one from Tetbury Audi near me - 115 plus VAT.

I also have one second hand if your interested.... came out of a 60,000 mile head. Not sure of fitment though, would need to be an APY I think.....

Sorry Tankie, disregard previous post, got confused!!

Yes, change the pump. Why be able to and not for £30?

thought the metal ones stopped them failing and no need to change them for giggles when you do belts ?....

Doesn't stop them failing - makes failure due to melted impeller impossible - but what about the bearings etc? Why risk it. You'd be well annoyed if you had the belt done early and then had to change the pump....

gutted dude, was hoping i wouldnt have been right about this one, for yours and your wallets sake!

would defo replace the water pump whilst its all out, as welly says, for the sake of £30 why not?

feel for you though dude :(

Thanks Jon, yeah ill opt for the water pump to then..

on top of the 200 on pads and discs :( looks like im on super noodles this month. Oh and there re-pressure testing the head... so could look at £450 on top of that ! :( Mr Abbey National is going to be very upset with me this month....

ahh very true..... But a fixed car with no go go juice is like a sock with a back pocket ;)

Ok car stripped... My all singing all dancing water pump was fubar.. the mech seal had gone and the prop shaft was uber wobbly ! :(

Block and sniff test passed, My head gasket is intact :)

Pump and belts £317 all in :(

Think ill still sell her

ah so not all bad dude, £317 isnt bad for a cambelt/water pump change, certainly better than the £450 audi charge!!

knackered seal explains your mysterious coolant leak too, bonus!!

Yeah man... on the brink of selling and going back to two wheels. though......... Summer is coming...
