A friend of mine sent me a link with the words "****** cheap, BUY!".
Then realised what they were and sent a very sheepish second email.
As far as my experiences go, the brakes on the S3 for my use are perfectly adequate. I don't go bombing down B roads at the moment, because I am still not use to the car. So decent pads and disks front and rear will see me fine.

Is it a B5? If so it'll be about the same weight as an S3. My 2wd B5 Avant was about 200kg lighter than the S3.
its a B5. mine is 1560kg wet weight, before extras.
S3 1420KG (from tinterweb), which i do think is a bit on the high side because ive seen an 8L 1.8t on a weigh bridge show 1240kg

Yeah, B5 Avant 1.8T Sport is about 1250kg too.
Quite a few of my mates remarked 'ooh, the S3 must be so much lighter than your old A4'... erm, nope!
Quattro adds a good 200kg, I guess the V6 adds a bit too. Oh, and the Recaros...
My other car is about 700kg max, so the little tiny front discs and rear drums are perfectly adequate (with green stuff pads!).

on the gti site, one guy took his b5 1.8t avant to the ring and got an astounding time. ill post up the vid for you because it had to be seen to be beleived. remap, lsd and lightly stripped. says its dull to drive though... sadly i can sympathise, my s4 is up for sale soon

I was actually looking for a decent, low mileage B5 S4 when I bought the S3. I just love the shape of the B5 Avant. My 1.8T wasn't the most inspiring of drives though to be honest, you think the S4 is a bit dull too? Must be fun in a straight line though!

typical audi experience tbh (albeit pretty damn fast)
steering is pretty unexceptional. lack of feel etc
handling. well it has infinity grip as far as i can tell. when i got the car it had some ropey nankangs on the front and i did get near the limits of the car as far as i coud tell. since then ive put a set of refurbished OE wheels with eagle F1s on. the grip is even higher. it does respond to inputs spritely for a car its size but theres not a lot adjustability, or any real need to adjust
you can put it into a corner, just pick any speed, it sticks and you plant the gas. in my golf i have my favourite specific driving shoes, you need them to get the most from it. in the S4 i can wear massive work boots, composite soles, steel caps, the lot because you dont need driver input. the car does it all for you. thats boring.
its funny when you can exit a tight roundabout, in the damp, in second and just pin it. no slip, no fuss, it just goes. you can take the mikey out of other cars. one example when i was out with my other half's little brother, came across a chavved up focus st. the S4 exitted one roundabout so much faster than the focus that i ended up short shifting as i was tripping over him till he moved over to let me pass. at a 70mph speed camera i didnt even bother to change down from 4th, matched him the whole way until he had to up change and mine just went past
at the next lights we stopped and had a chat, i loved the reaction because he commented on "thats not a normal estate is it? estates shouldnt ****** off down the road like that" which is what i love about the car
unassuming, youd never expect it to hare off down the road looking as sedate as an audi estate.

DS3000 pads on std 312mm are a good first step budget improvement in stopping..
worth a punt for what pads vs all new brake setup costs... £149+vat will yield a much better stop.

Bah, most modern 'family' cars feel a bit dull imo.
My MG feels like another limb or a favourite jumper everytime I take it out - telepathic controls! Feeling of impending death everytime you go over 50. Never dull.

My dads MGA gives the same feeling, esp when braking is involved!!! Non servo brakes are about as effective as opeing the door and sticking your foot out

You have to look much further ahead on the road and use engine braking as much as pos...
I reckon every new driver should have to drive an old mini, MG or similar for a year after passing their test. The ones that are alive at the end of the year will be much better drivers as a result.

OMG you know my dad lol!!
He recently done the advanced driving course and test and passed and states the same thing (although funny how he decided to sit the test in hi 5 series rather than the MGA lol)
I had the same brakes on my S3 a coupleof years ago. When i needed replacements, I did some research and found that the Movits were exact copies of certain 993 discs and pads which were a fraction of the cost. Sorry i can't remember which model or part nos.
