Hi all

I currently run a lexus is200 and i was wondering if a a3 auto 1.8 turbo sport will be cheaper to run than my is200.
any help appreciated
regards
Gary

cheers buddy yeah i thought it must of been a misprint but i checked parkers and the auto trader website and theres a fair few auto 1.8 t sport a3's.Really do fancy one but just gotta see if there any more better on fuel than my lex.Iv read up on em and on paper the audi is a bit better but i know that completely changes in real life so just thought id find out.

wow... i never knew that.. you wont regret getting an A3, they are fun. Tho i always fancyed a Lexus.

Ohhhhh thats just made the decision a million times harder lol i love the lex to bits but iv always fancied an audi lol Think at the min i just gotta way up the running costs etc and try and judge on that .

this is my second Audi, the first being a A4 1.8T sport. got bored with that and got a scooby. That was expensive as i made the silly mistake of spending loads on performance enhancments, tho it was seriously quick it was just so unreliable! Back into a A3 and i love the little thing. comming up to 2 months of owning it now and hands down its a million times more fun than my A4! they are little go carts yet with all the creature comforts! You wont regret getting one.

Lexus=posh Toyota

I used to drive my Dads IS200 all the time, lovely car but too slow, too soft on the suspension and crazy bad on fuel !

lol yeah i have to admit alan partridge does come to mind lol the main thing for me is the fuel economy is evil on mine so thats the thing that iv pretty much decided on getting an a3 but just want to know inr real time are the 1.8 turbos better on fuel than a 2 liter lex ,what sort of figures will i be looking at?

thats definetly a damn site better than im getting !!!! is that around town ?

i average 30 mpg around town and i have got afew mods

definetly will be gettin an a3 now i think cheers for that

i get about the same as the S3 boys on my 1.8T but i get to the speed limit as quick as possable!

haha alpine i know what you mean definetly think its time i got an a3 so prepare for a new one to the ranks lol

Please don't get an Auto.

Honestly, an auto car under 3L is the most pointless and pathetic excuse for a car in the world.

I would genuinely have a manual Metro over ANY small engined auto!

Especially in an A3...

Don't do it!

why not go tiptronic, theres a few floating about on autotrader....... gives you the option of full or semi auto that way....

A3 will give you between 30-35mpg in my experience, performance wise it will kill the lexus as standard but wont be as comfortable, personally id swap to an S3 - although maintainence costs will go up, but on the luxury stakes you'll have a better equipped car

that was more along the lines of what i was thinking was going tiptronic certainly seems to be the way to go

Dont be scared to get a high miler aswell, as long as its been properly looked after with bits changed when needed you wont have a problem with the audi engine. Not fancy an A3 quattro :D

how high would be to high for mileage? I wouldnt mind a quattro to be honest but just want to see whats around first and i have to try and get rid of my lex.Seen a pretty nice 2001 shape sport t with pretty much every extra but its 4100 so not sure if thats a bit high price wise?

I wouldn't have a problem buying a 1.8T with anything up to 150K on it, assuming the price reflected the mileage and it had been looked after.

Quattros are more expensive being rarer than the fwd. Mine will going for around the 5-5.5k area with 69k on the clock.. It sounds about right what sort of milage though, around 80k?

i think it was 73,000 but there wasnt any tax with it.what sort of things should i look out for when i go to look at one once i got rid of my current car.

1st i will say im no expert on A3`s as i have only had mine a few months, but have owned 1.8t`s on other models prior. 150.000mile with a good history is no problem, these engines are strong but you must be spot on with servicing!! if it has no history i would not touch it. On the b5 a4 chassis the front suspention arms are common to clonk and knock and are a pig replace if the pinch bolt is stuck on (which they normally are) i dont know if the A3`s have this issue also. Check the Turbo boosts propperly, dont expect to be pushed back in your seat like a Scooby or evo, but a turbo`ed presance will be there. If there is a rattle from the back of the engine when the revs drop after reving it its more than likley the turbo shaft rattling in which case could be expensive and a inconvinience! (spelling) check for smoke from the zorst on tick over, leave it running for 10 mins to let it warm up, normal things you look for in a new car and common sense etc. I have also read somwhere that some A3`s suffer from rust on the roof.

im sure someone will correct me if i have said anything wrong, but the main key to any Audi, is good service intervals, oil changing and just not treating them like a mk3 xr3i! Look after it and it will look after you! simples!

I SAID ALL THIS TO A NEWBE THE OTHERDAY.
I JUST COPY AND PASTED IT AS IM LAZY! HOPE THIS HELPS GARY!

thanks alpine its some very sound advice i appreciate it il let you all know how i get i might try n do a deal with the bloke if the cars good.

theres a nice blue tiptronic on autotrader at the moment, cream leather, tiptronic...looks fantastic, im gonna get my misus to test drive it to see if she can live with the tiptronic IF we manage to get rid of this ****** Mini :(

to be fair if anyone is claiming to have every option they are most likely lying, i have never seen a full spec A3 or S3 in my collective 8 years of ownership of both cars

exactly what i thought but im just guessing thats their way of saying its not a basic car lol
