Hi People,

I havent posted on here for a while but here it goes, i am thinking of lowering the motor a little bit but im not 100% sure on how much to lower it and what suspension kit i would need? has anyone got advice of what to buy and how much i should lower it?

I have included some piccys of the car to show you what its sitting at now (looks well high on 17's) I am also thinking of getting some 18" RS6's in the near future aswell or i may keep the alloys i have on now! what do you people think?

Any help, advice or suggestions would be appriciated!

Hello mate, I've recently seen an A3 (at the Lakeside meet) that had been lowered 35mm and it sat just right, didn't look like it could go any lower! I was surprised it was only on 35mm springs. I can't remember the guy's screen name on here but he may well reply ...

It's hard to tell how your car will look though. The only way to be sure you get it how you want it is to go for coilovers and play around with the settings until you get what you want.

Coilovers all the way if you can afford it! Nothing more frustrating than buying a set of springs and being disappointed with how it sits.

If you just want to put the kit on and it be lowered and handle well but still retain the comfort I'd say go for a good quality springs and shocks kit, something like the Weitec's or KW.

If you want to be able to lower it as much as you want and get the exact stance you require then go for coilovers, something like the V-Maxx, AP of Weitec's.

Hope this helps.

Wow,defo needs lowering mate,i'd get a nose bleed that high up ;0)

Springs are ok but you are then stuck at one height,i fitted weitecs
which are ok,handle well, but didn't go quite low enough on rears untill
i took adjusters out. but through winter i lifted the front for daily driving and with winter wheels.
Then when weather improves it will go back down with bentleys back on.
So you do get the option to mess about with heights untill you are happy with your own choice
that suits the look you like and to what works on the roads around you

Thanks for the advice here people, and yeah i do get a nose bleed being that high up lol. Money isnt really to much of an issue to be honest so i guess coil overs will be the way forward but i woudnt mind the ride stuck at 1 level if it looked good so springs and shocks would be an option aswell. any ideas on what ones i would need etc etc?

How much would you think i would be paying for the kit and fitting?

Can anyone give any good brands of coilover kits which i should get?

Sorry for being a complete noob but when it comes to lowering i have no idea at all!

Cheers again guys.

Hi Bailey,

Its ok, you still with me kid, and we'll get rid of that EARTH ORBITING suspension :readit: If you want the best possible ride, combined with handling and looks then you need to go down the coilover route! If you get height adjustable coilovers and dampening adjustable then you get the best of both worlds. If you haven't got an issue with money then you might as well by KW V2s, which are pretty much as good as it gets. I've got mine set to half way hard, which is the perfect set up for me, a firm ride with amazing handling when I need it. Mine is lowered -65mm, so its got the look I'm after

hey m8, what size wheels you got sir?

any ideas where i can get some coilover kits from? and prices please?

Although the wheels you have on are a nice design and mega easy to keep clean etc once you do any lowering at all they will look really really small, skateboad wheel like. I've done wheels 1st gone from 17" to 18" on my 8P1 Sport and it looks like an Allroad A3!

Be interested to see what you end up doing, good luck deciding.

P.S. Anyone got any springs they have no use for, need to remove some arch space quickly

When lowering the car doesnt it f**k up the camber of the wheels so they wear down in crazy ways? I had that problem with my old car, also the load sensor need altering!! Is S3 suspension a good route to go down??

Get the alignment done and your sorted!

What about load sensor or isnt that much of a big deal? I like how the S3 sits but would that be crazy expensive, lowering is something Im really paranoid about due to past (bad) experiences!!

My car is lowered -65mm ontop of the S-line suspension and I've not had a single issue!

You just got springs then N8? Any idea what the ride would be like with just springs on sport suspension, the roads round me are awful so cant be avin owt too stiff!

Hi there guys,

Sorry to revive an old thread but I thought it might be best as there is no real need to create a new one. As I have decided to keep my car for another few years and not sell it I think it will be the time to do some mods and lowering is back on the cards.

Here is my car at present:

So once again I am going to ask what do you think will be best? Coilovers? or shocks and springs?

Also how much do you think I should lower it buy? and do you guys have any recommended coilovers? or shocks? depending on which one is best.

Thanks again

Bailey

Coilovers adl, but completely dependant on budget on what to recommend. What are you spending?

Prob be looking to spend about £500 max at the moment.

Cheers

Have a look at DPM and Venom Motorsport mate. FK's, AP's or VMaxx will all be in your budget.

Cheers mate will do, what would you recommend? Does it improve thee ride and handling with coils? Also how do I work out the front strut diameter? I am unsure if my car is 50mm or 55mm

I know it is out of your budget, but there is a guy selling stainless steel fully adjustable H&R coilovers in outstanding quality on another forum (Nothing to do with me) ,
They are the muttz nutz, I posted a link to them in the eBay thread
P.s your struts should be 55mm

There are some brand new KW V1's for sale on that forum too (MK5 GTI forum). KW and H&R are about as good as it gets!

Hi Bailey!
Long time no speak, see etc...

Coils all the way... KW's v1 should be good :)

Alisdair its been some time, hows it going? You still got the same motor? I would go for the KW but I know they are a fortune, I dont really wanna spend more than 500ish mate.

H&R Street Performance SS Coil Overs I must admit £800 is a bit steep compared with the KW's ,you might be able to get a deal on the V1's if you get in touch with the guy and arrange pick up as he is now open to offers
KW V1 Inox-line coilovers As new boxed - Mk5 GTI

Go for a set of KW v1s a little more expensive than others but they are very good, just make sure you get the alignment done after you get them fitted..
