Private plates for an 8P

Those with private plates..... have you stuck to the legal spacing?? Or have you mucked about with it??
If so, how do you find the coppers are about it.... plenty of pulls???
What's the usual outcome if you get busted?

I've found the perfect plate from DVLA for £250, and it pretty much spells the shortened version of my surname with a bit of messing about.

For example.... if my surname was PILKINGTON and the reg is PII LKV, it could be spaced as PllLK V.

"Warning: If you intend purchasing a DVLA registration to misrepresent it on your number plate, we would rather you did not buy."
You are also advised to go to a registered plate making supplier to get your plates made up, who I would assume have to comply with 'The Road Vehicles Regulations 2001'.

I recently purchased my plate 'A3 RYJ' from the DVLA for £250 inc. transfer fee. What you have to remember is that there are additional costs for getting the plates made up and the administration costs for making changes to your insurance no doubt. All are nominal (£30 plates and £25 administration) in my case but these have to be factored in.

I saw this notice. Just wondered if anybody has been pulled up for doing it though.
I see plenty of cars about with odd spacing.

Even saw one guy who squared a '3' and reversed it to make it look like an 'E'. :scared2:
Reckon he might have been on one when he made that decision!

I've had various private plates on previous cars, and only once been pulled over due to not having enough space between the number and letters. I've had a few plates that took the **** including a tiny front plate on my VX220 and never got pulled over. As wrong as it is, if you have a nice car there seems to be less chance of being pulled for an iffy plate.

What was the outcome of the pull?? Fine? Correct the plates and present them at a police/mot station or something?
 
Pete, depends where you are mate...You wouldn't last a week in surrey with a incorrect plate. i get pulled all the time on the bike but the fact is, its cheaper to get the fine for a completely false plate than for speeding say.

Ok son, don't get ahead of yourself, it was just a bit of banter.

But as you've brought it up now, and now I do think you are a bit of a prat.... I'd happily say it to your face. But that's never going to happen is it.
 
Fact is Pill... incorrect spacing and font etc will get you 3 points and a fine dependent on you income. so £200-£500 would not be unusual. your insurance will also go up.
The Police are now **** hot on this because incorrect plate cant be read by the NPRS auto plate readers in Traffic cars and variable speed limit areas.
Its lot to pay to try and kid people your not running an old banger ...:p

£30 fine. Threat of confiscation if caught with them again. I didn't change them. It was grumpy northern ******* police. Never had another problem.

I've always had small bike plates but been ok. Not spent much time in Surrey though. Amusingly the only time I have been stopped on my bike was the day after I passed my test - a whole group of us got yelled at and called c*nts by a grumpy policeman on a bike...
 
I live about1/2 mile from Boxhill Pete. there are more bikes than cars on a Sunny day around here and belive me the law is everywhere, especially on Sundays.

We have loads of very nice private plates around here, its that sort of area and its makes me laugh how plates go from spelling out words to meaningless so quickly. I kinew of one guy with a mustang with small US type plates on it got caught twice and got £600 fine !! the local council grass cutters have got STR 1M, GRA55Y, MOW 1T etc and they now have them spaced properly :) The real problem is these plates say PULL Me...to coppers and once stopped they go over the car again and agin until they find something.
I got pulled on the bike a little while back. I passed the copper on a bike, i could see him behind the bushes on a round about.. I went down the duel carriage way at a steady 69.5 mph and he followed about 1/2 mile back for 4-5 miles. then pulled me and said i was doing 90mph !............and there is ****** all you can do about it.

I have some very subtle spacing on my plate and havnt been hassled by plod in 2 yrs.
Ok its maybe less obvious than the spacing you are looking to do but if you get a tug then then just space it in accordance with DVLAs rules and be comfortable in the knowledge it wasnt expensive anyway.

I live `up Norf` so the the police are still called Bobbys and ride penny farthings and clip little tikes round the ear for raiding apple trees...n that.

Wont say any more just in case Paddy is a Copper nark...... (misc Smileys lol etc...)

I have G6 RTD, have it spaced G6RT D on german style pressed plates. Have had it on my S3 and TT before that for around 2 and a half years with no hassle which has surprised me, carry 2 spare sets of plates in the boot, one on normal plates with the same spacing and one on normal plates with correct spacing.

Think as somebody said earlier, it depends on the car with the amount of attention you get, had an Escort RS Turbo convertible when I was 18 which had plates with a slight italic and the letters in carbon fibre that were on it when I bought it, the same policeman stuck 3 penalty notices on it outside the house at night in 1 week, the sad thing was he obviously had nothing better to do as the serial numbers on the tickets follwed on!

Anyway I'm sure now that I have written this I have cursed myself now!!

Do you still have whippets with scurvy and pigeons with rickets ??..and do all the kids have pet Kestrels and never go to school ? I have to go to Cromer tomorrow which is quite northish in so much as they are all related to each other......And i once saw a picture of a person from Scotland !!

Its a non-endorsable offence, so you cant get points. They can fine you and take the plate off you, but no points.

Today it was announced that on-the-spot fines for illegal number plates are to double from £30 to £60.

The DVLA are very specific as to how a legal number plate should be displayed - including font, letter size, and spacing.

This includes failure to conform with rules on font, size and colour of number plates. The use of illegal number plates can have a significant impact on criminal investigations and crime detection.

The fine could be in addition to a 3-point penalty on your license. Repeated offence could even lead to the registration number being confiscated.
 
I bought a cheap Northern Ireland plate for £49 a few years back - I went for "FIG" and three of the four numbers are the same. It does help to de-emphasise the age of the car.

As private plates go, it's subtle but also personal to me just because it'll always be on my cars - I'd also have been happy keeping some of the plates that came on my older cars. I've had it on two cars now and it's good knowing that I'll always only have one plate to remember!
