Is this oily looking mess on the front of the turbo an issue or is it just 10 years of grime that has built up on it?

I've never noticed an issue with oil levels and barely ever needed to top up. There is a little fore aft play in the turbine, but none side to side. The brown liquid in the intake is just the normal oily water (I assume) which I found in all the pipes and hoses I have removed (charge pipe, turbo hose, etc...). I did think it was sounding a little noisy, but no whine as such.

Is there anything I need to take a closer look at?

Cheers.

I agree. No way that amount of oil residue has come out of the turbo (without you having other problems!!) .Check rocker cover gasket.

Thanks for the replies.

The passenger side end of the block did have some oil on it, but not a significant amount. However I now see from my pic that under the turbo is filthy so I assume that it must be somewhere round the back. I'll replace the rocker gasket and have a proper look at the same time.

Audi want £26 for the gasket sealant which no doubt is a tube containing at least 5 times as much as I'll need. Has anyone successfully used a cheaper alternative?

Question n connection to the rocker cover can you loose a lot of oil from it being perrished???

Is it an S3 bud?, check the breather and the pipe connecting to the intake hose from it

Breather looks OK, as does the area below it, but behind it on the block the was where it was quite oily - not as bad as on and below the turbo housing though. Will have a better look when it is light.
