Thinking about getting a private reg for my car to hide the fact that it's older than every other 8P on the streets!
Also, I'm half way to a facelift conversion too so I don't want my original reg contradicting it.

So just wanted to get an idea of....

1) how much others paid for theirs
2) where you got it from
3) what you lot think of irish plates (as these seem to be the cheapest). Is the general feeling that they are cheesy/chavy/etc. I can't make up my mind.

(and so this thread can stay in the 8P forum and not get moved to the AS.net desert forum, which is the General Automotive section).....

4) Any suggestions of reg's, or have you come across any reg's which would be fitting for an A3 Sport??

Just get one that means something to you, your name or something?

And.. i paid £280 for L80EWY that included the transfer fee

Buy it from the DVLA and then the transfer costs will be included.
I paid £250 for my plate, which included the £80 admin fee, so in real terms the actual plate only stands me £170.
Bargain.

Cheers
Paul

Bought my plate for £390 from DVLA including transfer fee. Think DVLA would be the best place as other places don't usually include the transfer fee.

Totally lost for words !! and you dont want a" chav" plate..........You chav :sadlike:

dvla all the way - paid £250 for each of these:

M 800OBY
N 800OBY
R32 2UKE (LUKE
R111ETS (RIVETS)
B457ARD - this was taken off me about 6 years ago due to what it says!

bought mine for 250, and i went with pressed plates, was gonna get pressed old style black and white but it would really just cost too much with the coppers

Fibs! you couldnt buy a 2007 reg in 2004! Also the DVLA have all these type of plates banned much earlier than you can ever buy them!

as said get a plate that means something to you and dvla is the best place to look,

lee-R that plate isnt a 2007 plate as it is b457 ard which makes it a b reg

I would get a plate that you could carry to any other car in the furture.

As Chirs1988 says, it should mean something to you. Doesn't have to make sense to others IMHO. Luckily for me I picked up an ideal plate for myself and it won't mean anything to anyone else. Had standard plates made as I didn't want the hassle of being pulled by the police for any reason whatsoever.

I think 250 is the cheapest price you will pay but DVLA have prices up to 750 (or so). It really is up to if you because if you think the plate is worth the price then you can justify the cost. I know that if there is a plate I REALLY want for a 750 and that i absolutelty must have that then I would do it. I'll be cursing but I would do it!

Good Luck!

I paid 700 for mine from DVLA and says J80NOO ( JONO ) SO was happy to pay it but there are a lot out there they are more expensive the more they resemble a word and less numbers you have I fancyed JAY 1 not long ago but was 85K lol

I'm lucky because I'm just paying the transfer fee of 80quid and dad is letting me have his number which hes had for well over 20 years as hes getting a 10reg car and wants that reg. Its nice and non car specific - 249 WYD, so I can take it to every car I have now :)

I agree with what's been said. Get sometuhing that means something to or about you and not your car. It is a 'personal' plate after all. My wife and I have a matched pair of plates with our initials H5 DJR and H5 JHR and both came direct from the DVLA for £230 including the initial transfer fee. Mine has so far been on 9 different cars and my wife's on 4.

I paid 399 for Y444GAR and my brother got Y444MAT at the same time for 499. Both plates were from DVLA.

DVLA have `M153RAB1E` available, for only 50 groats.

Put a bid in Paddy, after all the plate should mean something to the individual.......ahem (lol smiley here)

Sorry Paul but buying a plate to hide the age of your car !! why ?? who is he trying to kid ? himself ?:faint:
I just think that you either have to seriously rich with money to waste...or, having made a list of all the things you want in life, put that list in order of need and you must have reached the stage where you have everything else.
I loathe paying tax ! I pay a small fortune every month. The idea of paying Gorden Brown and the DVLC for a ****** numberplate just grates with me....LOL:lmfao:

Its a vanity thing mate, some people like the `look` of a PP on their car.
Vain people.
Like me.

On the flip side though, I bet there are a few derv drivers with PP`s that think running a V6 (or S3 for that matter) is frivolous and unecessary.
And think that the annual savings on fuel are better spent on something that never really devalues AND gives them some pleasure.
Like a private plate.

Instead of all that extra money going to Mr Brown from all that extra fuel we
put in our 20mpg cars.

Lets not forget that a PP is the only thing you can do to cosmetically personalise your car, that is transferable between car to car, doesnt affect resale or Insurance, and is still worth what you paid for it years later after removal.
Try sating that about a fluffy dice or a Halfords spoiler.
And in many cases can become a family heirloom, appreciating in value in the long term
So there.

What about S3 PAD for your next car?.......(whistle smiley)....where the **** are my smileys anyway!!)) Come to the dark side......resistance is futile

cheers
Paul

Oh shut up paddy. Always banging on about something. :jump:

And just for the record guys, number 4 of my questions was only so this thread could stay in this forum (see my OP).

Anyway, I've found a plate very close to my surname, for £250 from DVLA.
So thanks guys (minus one person!!) you helped a lot.

nice one mate, i'll go with that!

Reg transfers wanted £595 for G7 HOU, which i very nearly bought, then i was told that all numbers go through dvla. I bought G7 HOU from dvla for £390 inclusive, sorted. The likes of reg tranfers are just agents.

It's all down to individual taste. I've had various plates on previous cars, and have gone for car plates rather than initials.

I find initials on your reg a bit vulgar, but that's just me - but understand if somebody else likes it.

With an A3 / S3 there's lots of options, unfortunately most of the good ones long gone!

I've been lucky twice on ebay.

Bought wifes X28ETH for £112 on retention And J111MDL for me for about the same. Beth and James in case you wondered!

I had a saved search that emailed me when similar popped up.

Mrs number was on regtransfers at the time for £2.5K & Vat!

The Beth plate works ok, particularly if BMW bring out an even smaller 4x4. J111MDL I struggle with though, that looks about as much like James as KR04DTV looks like Pete.

whats the general cheapest personal plates you can buy? I don't need mine to be personal to me or make sense!

I think you can still get those real cheap Irish plates with 3 letters then 4 numbers for about £80-100. Plus the £80 retention I guess. But they're not much less money that the cheapest plates that spell out words etc.

BTW I got my S3 related PP coz the car was cloned whilst for sale on the Trader before I bought it. Was sick of being pulled over by every Police force region I went in & being (very politely) accused of being a violent robber! Lasted for quite a while until I had had enough. Could have got a free plate transfer from DVLA as a victim of cloning but chose a PP at £250 all in.
