Hello all
Just some questions about oil change and what type of oil to use
My car has now done 87,845 as you can see below the car has been serviced about every 10k. Now it’s getting near 100k mark I'm thinking of an oil change every 5k. The oil is starting to get pretty dirty since last service only 3810 miles ago, also I have used up a 1L top-up in that time aswell. The car only does 5 miles to work and 5 miles back Monday to Friday and sometimes gets used longer at weekends.

I plan on having it remapped in March (Jabba) so want to get everything done that could need doing not to worries about the cost of the work just want to look after the old girl :)

1. What oil is best recommended for this engine?

2. Has my car been on AVS? I don’t understand what it is sorry :)

3. Is it worth having my sump off and the oil strainer/pipe check for blockages?

4. Do you recommend an engine oil flush? And what’s the best way to do it

Service History
Audi on 17.01.09 - 9942 miles
Audi on 27.09.02 – 19650 miles/ 9708 miles since last service
Audi on 15.08.03 – 29269 miles/ 9619 miles since last service
Audi on 12.07.04 – 38308 miles/ 9039 miles since last service
Audi on 08.05.06 – 53828 miles/ 15520 miles since last service
Audi on 03.09.07 – 65012 miles/ 11184 miles since last service
Specialist (QCS) on 12.10.08 – 75338 miles/ 10326 miles since last service
This is when I got the car picked up on 25.07.09
Specialist (garage I got it from) on 22.07.09 – 83682 miles/ 8344 miles since last service
Audi on 31.07.09 – 84035 miles/ 353 miles since last service
I had a full service from Audi when I got it for peace of mind everything done spark plugs heldex etc……

I hope I have given everyone enough info please let me know if I have over looked anything that would be needed or common faults.
Thanks

Dan

1. 0w40, 5w40 or 10w40
2. No it hasn't but i think the service would have been done using longlife oil which is 5w30
3. No, using 5w30 your engine shouldn't have sludgy build up
4. Yes, but not every oil change, buy a reputable engine flush, i use Forte

Your car isn't high mileage but S3's like the taste of oil so using 5w30 isn't a bad thing but once it reaches full operating temp it doesn't have the same viscosity as a 5w40 or 10w40 so it's burn away quicker.
I personally think using 5w40 and doing more frequent changes, every 6-8k you should notice your car going through less top ups.

in my car on the last service from audi was Castrol EDGE 5W-30 sould i continue to use that it's about £45 for 4 litres or would it be better to move to a 5W-40 whats the reason audi used 5w30 and not 5w40 if it's dont burn away so quick?
is 5w30 not require chaninging as often

I got my car serviced at audi in november and the oil light came on last week. The oil light never came on before and that was just under 10000 miles. I think the oil that audi use is rubbish and another way to get money off you!!!

5w30 is longlife, i say it's for people who don't like changing oil frequently. If your car is brand new then yes 5w30 is ok but once you have a few thousand there's no harm is stepping up a grade, you can flush it and put 5w30 back in, you'll just be topping it up again 3k later.

I use 0w40 or 10w40 and do my changes around 6k and i never top up in between, i did do last year as my breather was ******** and it was smoking more than usual :)

I use 10w40, i do have to top up every few thousand miles though.
