Yer I really do want one when the times right, I would like a 16v as it would be an occasional drive for fun, so wouldnt mind giving it some revs, plus its got about 30bhp more out of the box, Ive found some info out about the 2.0 engines from the mk3's etc.
There lovy looking cars you got too!. you see them for all sorts, is one on autotrader now for 599, but the person cant even be bothered to spell correct and the one sentence hes giving makes no sense.
I've often found that people who are a little bit older have absolutely mint ones ! They appeal to all sorts of people, and I try not be stereotypical and obviously its more about the car than the owner but I'd always be dubious of the "Yeah mate, fonin' bout dat golf yer?" types because the only reason they would have a car like that would be to thrash the nuts off it!
Ref' engine changes putting in the 2L 8V from an Audi 80 would be best, they are a little bit faster and the larger displacement gives you the speed you need without the revs but they do rev
really well!
A friend of mine had one, he's in his late 50's and has had the car from new and he's
never put anything non-genuine on it! Even to the extent that it failed its MOT because the back box had a hole in it and the MOT center fitted a pattern part to it and after he had the car delivered back he went to VW and had a genuine one put back on! The car was absolutely mint and didn't have a single mark on it, I managed to buy it off him for £600 with a years tax and mot !
I think the original advert is still on Car and Classic (another good site for picking up cars!) from when I sold it on if you search for it !
Try joining up to
www.vwgolfmk2.co.uk I used to be admin on there (8Klappe) but I left when some of the less desirable faces started to show up and it seemed like a forum full of kids and people who stereotypically you wouldn't want to take car advice from! A bad advert for the forum there, but as with all of them there are a load of good guys on there and normally heaps of good quality cars for sale.
If you do go to look at one and it's within a fair distance from me I'd be more than happy to give one a going over for you, or if you want any advice just drop me a PM. Oh and also on the Mk2 forum there is a fairly extensive buyers guide as well
Oh and finally, check with insurance before you go and buy one! I thought "Ahhhh, only insurance group 14!" but when my insurance company had me paying triple figures a week I had to sell up pretty soon
