As the title says, I bought a new S-Line Steering wheel which has Multi-Function as well as paddles. My car has DSG paddles as standard but no MF (8P1). The steering wheel control module I have (8P0 953 549) is compatible with MF according to this document:

http://www.rv-solutions.co.uk/public/Audi_Accessory_Update_Retro.pdf

Will the new steering wheel (from a 2008 S-Line 8P2) plug straight in and work with coding from VAG COM? or do I need a newer steering ecu? Are there any other parts that I need?

TIA,
Joe

as far as i know if you previously had multifunction then updating to the fbmfsw is just plug and play even with the dsg

Car didn't previously have MF it only has Paddles, I am not going to flat bottom because I'm not a fan of spending that sort of money on a steering wheel. According to that PDF though it is possible to have a MF steering wheel. Will it work with the newer wheel?

im not sure, im sure someone else will be able to confirm, perhaps even marcq over on vagoc

NHN knows a lot about this sort of thing, I've just changed from an 8P1 DSG paddle with no MF function to a FBMFSW with DSG paddles, it is a straight swap however you will need it to be plugged into vagcom to get it all to work and you will need to check that you have th right loom to alow a straight swap or you will need to purchase one from audi.

Hope that helps.

You may need the F version for your car as this is the most commonly known version that does cruise & MF, if yours has no letter on end then possibly it wont support this function, so would need upgraded module, obviously you would know of the possible pitfulls of going from a single stage airbag to dual stage on a pre 05 facelift car.

Yes if you had MFSW before then plugnplay with maybe a clearing of codes when wheel etc is diconnected & swapped over.

It will work as long as the module is compatible & codable.

Slight correction, yours is an 8P2 if we are talking about the IMHO stupid naming process of 8P1, 2 3, I just call it an 05 facelift, simplifies if you ask me & tbh its been found that quite a lot of the 05 onwards cars have the correct or a compatible module/slip ring already fitted, subject to checking of course, Toms had the kit already, so wheel swap & coding done.

What are the issues with a dual stage airbag? Does the airbag not work anymore? As far as I was aware the letter on the end of the module was just an update letter. What advantage will the later controller give? Should I try it first?

Just done a little research on this, so the 8P2 (Facelift 2005+ cars) are dual stage and 8P1 is not? What is different about the airbag systems? Surely it can only be the control module or airbag control module?

Right, just fitted the steering wheel, don't ask why now its been a long day. Recoded it and it works, lights up and the paddles work fine. I have recoded the steering wheel Module 16 on VCDS. The multifunction works however the controls are mapped wrong? to turn the volume up you have to click the left scroll wheel in, to turn it down click the right one and the two other buttons just make the radio search. I am assuming the clock spring is incorrect for the wheel? Has anyone seen this before?

TIA

Dual stage has 2 different levels of airbag dependent on the impact received so larger impact the higher pressured airbag if you get me, where as pre 05 had just the one stage where any impact that hit the sensors would fire the airbag solo stage.

Yes the controller letter that changes denotes an upgraded part via either an improvement in design or added functionality, so a later controller can give you more options to code, install etc, but not all are compat with your particular car.

Its the airbag control module thats hidden in the base of the center console & some of airbags themselves are different, along with crash sensors.

You mean slip ring & if you provide the part number of the ring fitted already & a 100% confirmation of the steering module, then we can try & advise, its most likely 1 or both of these 2 things yes.

PS. If I've already got involved with a thread, that usually means I'm subscribed to it, so no need to email me again about your updated posts mate. :)

I stated the part no before that is 100% correct. It has no letter after the number it is obviously the earliest revision. I will get the slip ring PN tommorow when it's light. I would have thought a slip ring from a later car will solve the issue. Are the rings different depending on whether the car has multifunction or not?

Sorry Mate, wasn't sure if you had seen my reply or not. :)

When i fitted the MF wheel to my 04 pre face lift i took off

Modul- 8PO 953549 and fitted 8PO 953549F
Slip ring- 1KO 959653 and fitted 1KO 959653D

This worked .

Your airbag will not work despite warning lights and coding being correct.

The airbag is completely different in shape size and more importantly, its mountings. you could try but its one of those things you never know if it will work ok until its to late. Personally i would not mess with it as it could do you more harm than good if it malfunctions.

Had a bit of a result tonight, got a new slip ring with the PN from above that has been confirmed as working and got a new control module with the PN 8P0 953 549 K out of 2008 S-Line DSG with MF. I am assuming it will work, I am in the process of changing it over. Today has been a good day also bought some 09 LED lights and the trim that was incorrect that surrounded my S3 DSG changer with the Gear state light included.

EDITED:
That PN caused some big problems. For starters it has no Cruise control. It also had no where to plug in a steering angle sensor, I have also now got the traction control, Tyre monitor and steering wheel warning lights all lit up yellow constantly. I think I've got an issue with my steering angle sensor.
