Why do some people drill their air boxes? Few have told me to do it but i'm not keen on drilling holes in my car!! They said it gives the similar sound to an induction kit?

No i'm not a chav who does bodge mods, just wondering what it's about that's all :)

Cheers

Jay

take out the fins and drill two or three small drain holes, that'll do the trick...you dont want to be sucking too much hot air from the engine bay

just cos the fins are said to stop water filtering through into the intake...although id guess they are there for part of the moulding structure if i had to guess.....the holes are precautionary

Fair play. This is another mod for me to do when I can be bothered. Possible after i've got a fmic, then I can put in a bigger intake too.

I really like the induction noise and the slightly louder whooshy sound (mines quit subtle not to boy racer ish) so I risked it by drilling some small holes in the bottom of my air box and de-finned it... Was expecting a performance loss in the summer and if I'm honest I've felt no difference to what it was with no holes.... Just my personal experience.

Aje, make sure you do them at the bottom of the box, below the filter on the side closest to the wing, so if you're in the drivers seat, its the right hand side, bottom half, only need a few.

On my Mk2 Golf GTI, i fitted an almighty Pipercross Cone Filter, the roar was immense, but then was told about the power loss, as I didnt have a heat shield, then in the Mk3 GTI, i just got a jetex panel filter and drilled a few holes in the box, the difference was amazing, it was so much more smoother and the induction roar was there too.

With the S3 though, i dont think I will be going down either route on the filters, will stick to OEM. :)

Soon as i seen this thread, memorys of the corsa days just came flooding back

Ohhh how we all used to drill the airboxes and get that lovely noise in our little chavy cars lol

Drill it to hell and if all else fails ive got one in the Garage for sale with no holes in belive it or not :)

Hi i brought a panel filter for £35 and it made a slight difrence in noise well worth getting..Makes the car run 2-5bhp better piper cross or k&n

erm, your panel filter makes 2-5bhp difference? is it a magic panel filter.......

I know its a bit offtopic but, On Forza 3 theres a Pug that gets a 120BHP increase from an exhaust system lmao....

Anyway, Your ******* in the wind trying to gain BHP from a differant panel filter :(

Oi!!!

I have that same exhaust, but I have got an extra 225bhp, its like I have 2 engines in the car now, just under 500bhp with an exhaust.....wicked innit!!!

Dats Rudeeeee Bludddddd :) ;)! xx

Haha, this thread reminds me of this...

I used to think this was the business, remember when you used to drive around in the wrong gear at full throttle to make your car go VROOOOMMMM ?

I heard a car yesterday making so much noise, I turned around expecting to see a scooby or something absolutely blasting down the road but it was a bright red corsa doing about 20mph in first gear! I cant believe young kids still thinks this looks/sounds good. I thought the "Fast & Furious" era had gone!

Nooo, thats my old 205 GTI.

Heres another one of my amazing air filters and another chance for "guess the car"...

Why yes, the pixies made it....

On topic however, I'd just remove the pipe at the end of the air box which goes to the wing.

Easy to do. Easy to change back. Requires no hole cutting. Get the whoosh noise. Everyone's a winner. Big smiles all round. :)

Either that or make the box look like swiss cheese.... Then stick a vent in the bonnet directly above the air box.... Thats a good look.

Thats not an air filter, it's a discus!

EDIT: Incidentally, that is an immaculate engine bay!!

Yeah, my dad's 1967 custom MGB V8 Roadster. I think it had less than 1000 miles on the clock then. It's got about 9K on the clock now and the engine bay still looks nice!

Is that a 3.9 converted to carb ?

LOL you lot crack me up!

Already got a green cotten panel filter so will see how i get on and let you know!

Cheers :)

Has to be a Mark2 GTI dude, is that a pipercross one??

I think mine was one for a cossie, that was 'made' to fit, and if i remember correctly, it was actually bigger than my head (mum's words)!!! LOL

i'd feel uncomfortable if my mum said that to me Nilzy....... :)

Class haha!

Anyway, back on subject. I have just bought Hodge's spare airbox with the aim to remove the fins and put a drainage hole in it then swap it over with my standard box. I'll get a few pics up once its done for those of you that haven't seen any of the old threads on this subject. When I do my FMIC I'll be putting in a bigger intake hose too.

Oh and thanks Hodge :)

Yeah, it was a Pipercross MAF mounted one...Cost £97 *** !!!

That car made the most mental sound ever, it used to whistle and sounded like a G60. Went like flippers :)

I'm trying to find a photo of my old Mk1 Fiesta's engine bay but I don't think I can, that had a 1600 X-Flow in it with a down draft solex and a pancake filter on the top ! I had an Allegrs SS with twin SU's and pancakes too lol !
