Sytner High Wycombe do charge £10 (I presume per day) for insurance. I used to cover the cars with my own Direct Line policy of the time.
Sytner GX don't charge me - there is a £10 charge to reduce the excess (from £5000 to £200 IIRC) but in the words of the service advisor "if you crash it just pay the £10" .. OK /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ok.gif
A local dealer charges around £25 per day for the use of the car!! I don't know if insurance is included or not.

Quick question... my dealership are trying to persuade me to install a traker system... about £800 all-inclusive for life of my ownership of that car with tracker.
Has anyone else installed tracker in their new A3? Does it help reduce insurance substantially? Has anyone had their car stolen and returned with the aid of tracker?
Would just like to know anyone's point of view?

There was a thread somewhere else (posted by a moderator if I remember correctly) about some guys who attempted to steal a load of TT's from a dealer. Each car was fitted with tracker and all but one receovered in tact.
It's probably best to ask your insurer if they give a discount and of how much for having it installed.

I saw that, many thanks. I just did not know if there was that advantage to having it in the A3 as I note that it was the TT's they took, and not A3's But it was that article that got me thinking about it.

is it worth having an immobiliser and alarm? is it worth having insurance? you never know, do you? I had one fitted with the lifetime subs, but I'm sure it wasn't £800!!! I'll dig out the invoice. While living in africa, we always carried guns around with us, the idea was that you'd rather have a gun and never need it, than really need a gun and not have one.

I beleive that's only true of GPS based tracking units. The "Tracker" system is a radio based unit and your car can even be tracked in a container on a ship on it's way to France! It also covers most of Europe, so if the thieves export the car, it can still be tracked.

Sound advice indeed... particularly about the guns... I've heard that the taxi drivers out there have little gun wars. Still, don't they have a car alarm system in SA which shoots out flames from the underside of the car, now THAT's what I'm talking about!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Would be good to know how much yours cost, but I think it depends which system you go for, the one they were quoting me for is set off and tracker are told if your car moves without you being present.

Also worth considering RAC Trackstar.
Each has pros and cons, at least Trackstar can tell you where your car is at all times, whereas Tracker needs to be activated and then intercepted by a properly equipped Patrol car. Both can be disabled relatively easily if the thief can find the box and rip the aerial off.

Thanks for the advice guys... I think I'm going to go ahead and get it installed, the old SA gun story has influenced me enough!
But I like the idea of tracker coming out and doing it themselves!

I think the simple answer is 'yes' if your car is at risk of being stolen/worth a bob or two. I speak from expereince, sadly ... if I spend £30k on a car and some low life steals it - a) I want them caught b) I do not want them to profit from the theft c) I simply do want anyone taking and keeping MY car. The tracker on my car will activate with or without the keys used to start the car - the moment it's driven in fact and parking it underground aint going disable the signal. A friend of mine had the same Cobra ADR based tracker on his RS4 - keys got pinched from his house and car with them - four hours later, car recovered, thieving scum nicked. He got his RS back intact - well, aside from a cigarette burn on the passenger seat - which did rather annoy him! Yep, get a tracker!

Totally agree....all of the relatively high performance cars I've owned have had some form of tracking and immobilising system fitted.
Well worth the cost.

Have a tracker fitted to my current car, was already fitted when I bought it so just had it reactivated. Fob needed new battery so the tracker wasn't detecting the fob and thought the car was being stolen. In short I backed out of my garage and got about 100yrds before I got a call off the tracking center. Gave them my pass word and told them to deactivate for 2 hours ............ 2 hours later they phoned me and said we can see the car is back at your address, do you want us to reactivate! Quite impressive.
Different budget trackers, the installers on mine have to have the installation checked and tested by authorised factory inspector. Part of the check is that it is mounted in such a palce and mannor that its no easy job to rip it out ................ I've still not found mine yet??

i personally wouldnt, i dont want my car back after it has been raped by some scumbag, id rather them burn it out and i get paid up on insurance. If the tracker activates they usually dump it somewhere quiet for a few days to see if it gets recovered, if it doesnt then they assume it hasnt got tracker and will ship it abroad or break it down.. if the feds recover it you get it back, ragged, raped and not the car you used to have. Wont be able to sell it for the right price as it was stolen recovered and you will always have the feeling that someone else has shagged your wife.....

This is my opinion purley but i wouldnt want my car back after it was stolen. Car thieves are hardly ever caught too so dont take the moral issue of wanting justice, there wont be any, even if they go to caught there wont really be any until corporal punishment comes back

The car wouldn't necessarily be raped though ragsterx as they don't have a chance to do it. Plus the insurance money wouldn't help some people such as myself, I got quite a few options on the car when I bought it and the insurance wouldn't pay out for them and I'd never get a car exactly as I'd want it anyway.

Totally agree, especially if you have Gap insurance.
It is often difficult to get your car off the stolen recovered register meaning it will be near impossible to re-sell and who know what the thieves did to your car whilst they enjoyed ruining the clutch, gearbox, tyes and brakes!

At the end of the day its the Insurance Co. that get all the benefit of a Tracker and yet WE have to pay for it?
Its basicaly Insuranace for the Insurance Co.
And look at it this way, if Scum nick your car, and its recovered and returned, that very Scum knows exactly where to come to damage the car/you/your property out of spite.
Horses for course but not for me Im afraid.
Even if it was for free.

Having had my last car stolen (no tracker & no, never recovered) I had one fitted to my new car and another to my wife's Cayman S shortly after the theft of my car. Part of me wouldn't want the stolen car back, but you feel so angry when this happens to you - I simply do not want the thieving scum to profit from the theft of my car. I also want them caught! I forgot to deactivate my tracker a while back - I got a call off the tracker people within 10 minutes to ask me to confirm all was OK (at 5am)yes, very impressive... the moment the car moves they start to track it.
It's a personal choice and the annual fee is quite a lot (mine's £200 a year), but technology is pretty good these days and I will personally take all the steps I can not to be victim of crime again and not to help the fukwits stealing cars buy more drugs with their ill gotten gains. As for insurance (and GAP, which I claimed on) not paying up for the full value of the car including options fitted to it - that's down to people not checking the policies before they sign them! My insurance covers ALL factory fitted options and if any mods are added, well you just inform the insurer and have them added on the policy. Some insurers will not cover factory or even dealer fitted options - so make sure you check the policy. Simples. As for GAP - I had return to invoice.... car was worth £18k when nicked, cost me £28k. I got £17.5k off the insurer (£500 excess) and a cheque for £10k off the GAP policy. So, GAP is something that's rather worth having too!
