Hi guys,

im not very happy at all... I just went to look at a Beetle with my girlfriend, parked up outside the garage behind a 4x4 thing, gave it plenty of space and everything. Looking round the Beetle, I noticed this 4x4 speed off... thought nothing of it. Anyway.... walk back to car only to notice a dent in the bonnet about the size of a 50p peice and pretty deep! To say I'm pi55ed off is an under statement. The dent is on the drivers side just on the strong bit that goes into the grill. I'll get some pics up soon. From the description, do you think it can be pulled out???:banghead:

You will need to get someone to do it for you as its sealed behind there and access is limited.

One of theose dent master places should be able to help you as they have many posh tools.

Unless you can do that thing i saw on you tube about using cold air and hot air to make it pop itself out.

"goes to find"

guttin mate, some people need a good kicking. hope its not too bad and can be pulled out

It annoys me, not the fact that someone has done it, but that they have done it (cant see them not knowing) and just driven off, without even leaving a note! I wouldnt be so mad if they had the guts to even just say look, im sorry.
Even worse, I had literally just decided last night that I would start saving for an S3 in a couple of months, therefore, I dont wnt to spend anything on the A4... looks like I will now!

Pictures... (not great quality)... I know it doesnt look huge, but its big enough IMO...

I've got two dents in my bonnet, and unfortunately they are located right where the double skin is... so no access to tap it out.

It's either filler, or a replacement bonnet.

I've been looking for a new bonnet for mine ever since I bought it... with no luck yet. Grrrrr!

It's shocking that people do that... damage someone else property and then not take responsibility. It would be different if it were the other way round I bet... they'd be wanting their pound of flesh!

fill it, shouldn't be an issue

I did have a quick look on the bay, but as like you, no luck. lol!

You reckon? That thought had passed my mind today... what about paint, would I need to respray the whole bonnet?

Just that I want to sell it in a couple months, and reckon the dent will depreciate it somewhat, as the rest of it is pretty good=(

My mate has just had some dents 'pulled' out on his roof on his x-type. None of which were done from underside, the guy used heat and suction pullers from the outside...

Can't this process be adopted for your bonnet?

Well, I suppose it could, and it would be the most ideal way, but it seems a bit of an awekward place.... all curvey and all.

I'd speak to a bespoke body shop who are used to this sort of thing, you may be surprised what they can achieve....

feel for you! prob would cost around£70 for the dent guys or £150-£200 i guess to respray bonnet plus filling dent (london rates)

Nooooo!

I got 5 LARGE dents out of Rach's TT the other week (a garage door blew over and landed on the shoulder of the rear wing and made a RIGHT mess of it) all for just £50! They did a superb job and you really can't see where they were... even if you start looking for any sign of them having been there.

The same talented guy looked at my bonnet and told me he could do nothing with it. ******.

wow maybe cos they was large easy to get out thats why so cheap? how bad is yours do you have a pic?

A lot depends on how creased the metal is.

Was a similar topic on the landrover forum i use and i'll say the same thing here:
We have insurance which is supposed to protect us against things like this, however because the insurance companies shaft you proper style for any claim whatsoever, your left with the decision: Run, or pay an extra 2,3,4,5,6 hundred pounds for insurance for the next 5 years. The cumulative cost of increased premiums for such an incident could easily be 5-10times the cost of the repair, if not more, for a small incident like this and quite often people simply cant afford it. When you put someone in the position of financial hardship for 5 years (perhaps even to the point where they simply cant afford to insure the car) or doing a runner, MANY will choose the latter.
The other option would be offering to pay for the repair out your own pocket (assuming you can afford it), and avoid the insurers altogether, keeping your conscience clear and saving any increased premiums, but then the other driver might decide to claim anyway (if hes a bellend), and now you've let yourself be known and he has your details your back to being getting boned.

Many years ago, when i was young and had just collected my first years NCB (insurance had dropped from £1300 to £800ish), i hit a car in MacDonalds car park. My electric window motor had failed, so i'd opened the door to collect my food, and placed it on the passenger seat while drawing away from the window. Found a nice space, slotted it into reverse and backed in. Unfortunately the drivers door wasnt shut, it was ajar, so when i swung the steering over, the door swung open, and clipped the mondeo in the next spaces front wing. My first thaughts were "oh s**t thats going to cost me a bucket load if i claim" and the next thaught was "i'm off" and i jammed it back into first ready to smoke it out the car park. However i then noticed EVERYONE was staring at me, people in the drivethru, people inside, the staff at the window, so running was out of the question, as undoubtedly someone would have had my numberplate. I backed into the space and ate my food, waiting for the person whose car it was to come out.
As it happened the wifey came out, looked at the scrape and said "ach its not down to bare metal, and i stoved the back of it into a lamp post last week, dont worry about it" so i got lucky.

I should point out i'm not condoning the actions, just pointing out that when you bring money into it, being nice can often go out the window.

how much is an a4 bonnet on ebay? hardly like our cars are rare

Presumably they're wanting one in the correct color?

Although having said that, facelift bodypanels tend to be rarer than the earlier stuff, not too many facelifts being broken yet.

I've found facelift bonnets... no problem. It's finding a silver one that's the hard bit! I let one slip through my fingers not so long ago. I was really mad with myself.

The main problem with mine is that a previous owner must have slammed the bonnet shut with some tools left in there causing an outward dent. The dent guy has knocked it back as much as he can, but because the metal was stretched so much, the repair isn't the best in the world (in fact, it's pretty poop). Plus two other small dents in the double-skin area make me want to swap it out. I don't filler on a 'moving' panel is a good idea as when you come to shut it I can see it all coming loose!

Grrrr!

Hassle of having it painted... colour matching, etc.

I'd just rather bolt on a silver one and have done.

I'll probably end up having one painted and getting a few other bits and bobs done to the car while I'm at it... give it a couple of months till I get my Mk3 completed and sold...

If it helps I had a dent much like this on my bonnet, from a MASSIVE pebble chip, on the lower lip (under the grille panel) from before I owned the car. I lived with it until some kindly person scraped the side panels with a shopping trolley which necessitated painting all of one side of the car.

I got the bodyshop to do the bonnet at the same time and forgot all about the dent - I dont know how they did it, but you cannot see any evidence of it at all now, and I do know they are not filler-merchants. I'm assuming he welded a rod to it and pulled it before painting.

I totally understand what you are saying, but I'd just be happy with someone owning up and apologising. I suppose, at the same time... they may not have known it was my car, no paper, etc and in all honesty... I don't have a clue what I'd do in that situation. It's easy for me to say oh they should own up.... but when it happens... as you say... the word nice isnt the 1st thought.

Geeman, you have the same views as me! There just seem to be no silver bonnets. and getting one resprayed would surely cost a good £100 or so!

cheers for the comments though!

Reading this thread and seeing those pictures make me angry. It's just another reminder of how the system is too soft on crime and other offences. I don't know...
