I don't have a service manual for the car so I don't know what Audi recommended doing and at what mileage. I thought for sure I could google one on the internet somewhere but so far no luck. Anyone know where one is?

The car has over 116,000 miles on it now and I don't have the detailed receipts to know for sure what's been done in the past.

I assume it's overdue for a timing belt kit, not that I can find one for the AGU engine in the States. What else could they be recommending to inspect/adjust/replace? I really runs fine so this is probably jinxing me just bringing the topic up...

Anyone know of a good place to order AGU engine parts/kits for that sells in the states?

What lubricants need to be replaced and with what spec fluid?

Anyone know what parts this Audi DOES NOT have in common with the Golf Mark IV as sold in the states?

I'd love to be able to go to an VW dealer and just tell them to do this and that per the Mark IV service manual but I'm sure that'd probably end up being a mistake...

S3's were first said to have cambelts done at 120k miles then they changed them to 60k or 5 years so yours needs doing and also have the water pump replaced with a metal impeller one

I'm not sure what differences there are with US models (I'd assume none though) compared to UK models mate, but year for year, they are mechanically the same from a service point of view.

Compared to a 98 UK spec golf, you have the same engine in every way, the same suspension including all arms, bushes and struts, the same brakes and clutch including all lines, cylinders and fluids.

The differences occur in the electrical system, the lights and aircon systems are different, and obviously interior switch gear and stereo system.

What year did the golf gti turbo come out over there? I seem to recall you saying that all golfs are AUM engined. I don't think the cambelt service on the AUM is any different to the AGU, I think the VVT on the AUM's operates at the gearbox end of the cams, so it should be no different. Other than that, all the suspension and brakes on the later models was identical, so that shouldn't be any different service wise.

Your best bet would definately be to take it down to a friendly VW dealer and ask them to take a look.

If you wanted to confirm parts and things, try and get hold of a copy of ETKA, the VW/AUDI parts database program, you should be able to compare part numbers across both models to make sure you're getting the right bits.

HTC, the link recognizes a file has been uploaded but keeps saying temporarily unavailable. Does it work on your end?

Hmmm, maybe Megaupload has to do some sort of check on it before it goes live?

If it doesn't appear soon then send me a private message and I'll email it to you.

Unsurprisingly, all this information is in the A3 servicing faq - have look in the stickies.

There are reasons for and against replacing the plastic impeller water pump with a metal one. Read up on the pros and cons and decide for yourself. I replaced mine with an OEM one a few years ago.

One thing that I've not seen a single post about so far, is the need to replace all the airbags after 14 years. Those with pre-facelifts are looking at some serious maintenance costs in the next few years...

What's the facelift in reference to? 8L to 8P platform? Also, sticky is for an S3 and I have an A3 and I've never bothered to determine what the differences were...

a facelift is minor refresh to the current model, where they keep the bulk of the car the same, but just change the interior and or exterior somehow. The 8L had a facelift in MY 2000

Also just noticed you're from the states too, so you're most likely to have stricter servicing schedules than us euros. You may be best off getting a schedule from another American handbook..

hahahaha. I've not heard that one before! and I'm fairly confident that nobody will ever have it done either!

I know, could you imagine the cost of that?? on a facelift that would be steering wheel, passenger, recaros and side curtains.

On my 8L service book, Audi do seriously say though that you should replace all the airbags in a car after 14 years!

How much did it cost to replace the oem impellor?
