S4 or RS4????????

part of me would be interested in seeing someone doing it and the costs, but then another part of me wouldnt even want to see someone start because having seen and helped out with so many engine swap job its rarely straight forward and there are often pretty steep hidden costs... the last one being a 2.0 turbo from a 406 going into a 205 gti. all the hardware got installed, new flywheel to match the old gearbox etc new engine mounts made up, but then the cost of sorting out all the other bits crippled the project and it was left (sold recently for buttons i think)

the same guy put an m52 2.8 24v lump into his e30 bmw. trying to use the old ecu was a no no regardless of the injectors used. megasquirt was built up, but that was put on hold for money, then one day when drivign the car perfectly normally it totally lunched its clutch. the drive line is a hybrid of e30 and e36 parts, with an e34 clutch i think

so unless you have a bottomless pit, go for it... but if youve got a bottom less pit, why not just buy the real thing?

Doing what? building an RS4 from what?
the issues you mention are the reason I didn't look at the S4 shell to fit my 2.0l 20v engine in. different loom, different ECU, different gearbox etc etc.

but if you were dropping in an S4 engine into an S4 body there is no issue.
If you speak to the MRC, UNIT20, Dialynx chaps they will tell you that they rarely fit RS4 engines to cars they are tuning for big power when they can fit S4 engines, or even better an S4 engine with NA heads. just too expensive to find an RS4 engine and for little gain.
(I only know this as a mate of mine asked me to find him an RS4 engine, he races one but doesn't do the whole forum thing and didn't too many people in the UK as he gets all his work done in Germany.)

It only gets complicated and expensive when you try and put an engine into a car that was never intended for it like the 205 you mention.

but putting an s4 lump into an rs4/saloon shell and making it rs4 spec on ko4s, for less than £7k (without takign into account fuelling) would be like falling off a log?

Its a MAF driven ECU, so long as you match your remap file to an injector capacity (whichever tuner you use will advise on that) and slap on a uprated 044 pump then yes I would say it is a pretty straight forward fit. It has been done countless times.
much less hassle than dropping in a V8 or unrelated engine.

This is what happens with the vr6 engine when people want to put it into different platforms, the best stock 12v vr6 engine power wise is the 2.9 as found only in the corrado, but they are rare as hell so people just fit the 2.8 with comes in the golf, sharan, galaxy, vento, etc, which are widely available, the 2.8s are also supposedly stronger for turbo applications which is why you hardly ever see a 2.9 turbo vr6, always usually a 2.8

Find out if i'm getting made redundant on Monday. If it's not good news, I may well have a 415bhp S4 engine for sale, along with a whole host of other trick S4 parts. I also live about 10 miles from Unit 20 too... so it might work out perfect for someone wanting to buy the widebody!
