Broken mirror - not amused - help required

Happy New frickin' Year! Just returned from hols and returned to car parked at brother-in-laws flat in Glasgow. Driver's door mirror hanging off.

Mounting looks intact as does mirror housing and mirror itself. Side repeater still works as well. I have electric folding mirrors and when I flicked the switch I could see the part turning. This is the part that's broken. It looks like just the internal part joining the housing and mirror I would take a pic, but it's too dark now.

It was parked street side, so maybe just a passer by knocked it?

Just checked with my insurance and got some story about adding my compulsory and voluntary excesses, so a claim may not be my best option.

I'll take it into Audi for a proper look tomorrow and get a quote, but anyone any idea if it could just be a part required or am I looking at a complete new mirror and labour to fit?

Any ideas and possible costs would be helpful, even if ball-park.

TBH mate without a pic I cant advise fully, sounds like the pillar has been snapped of if its hanging as it shouldnt come of anyother way cause its held in place by a fairly robust spring & clip so must be snapped, get a pic on here when you can then will advise mate as know fair bit about the mirrors.

As I said, seems the broken part is the internal.

If it's looking like a whole new mirror, break it to me gently. :(
 
Silly question , but you say they are electric folding , where they folded at the time ?
 
gutted for you mate, sick of all these chavy idiots vandalising peoples pride and joy, Its just total jealousy!
 
Not good lad, Cant stand that sort of thing!

It can't be any worse than the start of the year for me. My Audi had the drivers wiper snap off at the stalk of the wiper assembly......Great!

Now to cheer me up I went for a blast on my "SPARE" MX bike as my race supermoto is away getting the engine rebuilt and tuned for next years scottish/british champs.

5 or 6 laps in the engine dropped an inlet valve...........now I have two bikes needing rebuilt at serious money a pop.:undwech:

I'm assuming it was malicious, but you never know. It's a wide pavement and they were turned in, but we all know they don't turn in that much. Could have just been bumped into, but it's never your first thought. So annoyed. Don't need this outlay so early in the year. Serves me right for parking in a city street for a week.
 
Well it will not cost as much as replacing the whole unit that is for sure.
 
I'm hoping NHN can give me some good news, but fearing the worst.

Just back from a week in New York, plastic took a battering. 1st baby due early June, so all pennies after NY are being looked after. Don't need this pish from some blootered, jealous mink thinking he's Archie and kicking seven bells out of my mirror!

Ok so your really not that far off me then, in terms of a bad start to the year.

Our First baby is now 9 weeks old..

Not so much the money you want to watch , more the sleep , ! Enjoy it now..
Congrats , it's all very interesting and fun , you will love it..

Just don't do what i did and get a new car the same week the baby is born , and refer to the car as your new baby as i did!
 
1st of all that was a **** head I reckon not a tealeaf & from those pics mate I'd say you could be damn lucky, as its just the pillars that need replacing, the folding motors are built into the internal mirror chassis, not part of the pillars, but mirror needs whipping of, the plastic trim/pillar that is fixed to the car needs removing & new one fixed in place, then refit the internals & cover, plus wiring.

Only down side is it will take a little while to remove & refit, but based on those images you've been fairly lucky in the grand scheme of things, unlucky its happened, but lucky its not as costly as complete new parts as trust me they're fecking expensive.

If you were down this way I'd help you out.

At least you still have the mirror! Others haven't been so lucky.
 
Sorry to hear about your mirror Rich

I also had mine done a couple o weeks ago while it was folded in outside my house on the ROAD side not the pavement, mine are also electric, now the mirror when i press the button just opens all the way out so the people passing me on the motorway can look at themselves :scared2:

What you gonna do eh!:shrug:

Im convinced it was deliberate but just to let you know mate your not alone

I know, you're right, lost count of the threads I've read here about stolen mirrors.

Mike, sorry to hear you're in the same boat, sounds like you're at the laughing stage. Haven't reached acceptance yet, still at rage lol!

Do it yourself mate, with some guidance you'll get it cracked out in no time.

Labour would be few hundred alone knowing audi, but parts, urm not sure, shouldnt be more than £50-£100 tbh given only pillars, funny enough I need some for my latest mod as I ended up with lhd ones that have a wider passenger angle, dohhhhhhhhh, I'll phone them tomorrow & ask for price & if get chance post up for yer.
 
Well, it's the mounting only that is needing to be replaced, so yep, lucky on this one. Correct diagnosis from NHN, spot on mate (pillars, mounting, same thing I think, the tech conformed it). £128 for the part + VAT + Labour. Tech said 1 to 2 hours to fit. All in, a lot less then I was expecting, but didn't need the expense in first place with the car going back in March.

On a positive note, no one was hurt and I learnt that the new car is build week 5, so looking at 2nd/3rd week in March for delivery.

I know I should probably try and fit myself, but honestly, I'll probably feck it up.

Cool glad it was only as I said, unlucky but also lucky if you get me.

But tbh mate I would just to save the labour costs, do it myself, but thats me, not a tight rse just pointless expense, then again door card of, looms disconnected etc etc some wouldnt like to delve into I guess.
 
That's what the service guy said as well, the door card will likely have to come off, so the list was starting to grow. Knew there and then I'd muck something else up so just booked it in. I know where you coming from though on doing the jobs yourself. I'm better doing the jobs on the mountain bike, but the car, no. All a bit more expensive if I get it wrong!

Sorry actually forget door card of, just me done it so many times for things, but with yours 99.99% sure not needed, you can just remove a rubber trim to unbolt the mirror, which do last btw, as isnt covered by doorcard, then you can disconnect the wires from mirror & folding motor etc, then remove the fixing & spring on the pillar etc, then feed wires out of old snapped pillar, then through new one & then reverse fit it all, now if you need more slack on the wires then yes door card of for sure to disconnect everything & remove the rubber grommets.

I'll remember that about MTB man, may need some advise/help, any suggestions on flexy seat post?
 
When mine were stolen I fitted the new ones myself as I'd already needed a loan from the IMF to by a pair from Audi. It really is very easy I managed to do both in an hour and a quarter (after Audi quoted 3 hours/£270). Unless the auto folding ones are different I think you would have to remove the door card to access the electrical connector. I followed a the door card removal advice on here which was spot on
 
Hhmmm, sounds a little easier when you say it like that.

I'm currently running a Thomson layback, gives a better riding position on a smaller frame, bit of a short ar5e. The adjustable ones don't do it for me, but I don't do many XC racing, so just stop, adjust and crack on. Crank brother Joplin R gets a good write up though (http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?PartnerID=79&ModelID=25014).

Nah he will reuse wiring so no need to access the 16-20 pin connector for mirror behind door card unless wiring has been broken & folding arent different interms of wiring & arent auto either, just more wires but same route/connector used.

I didn't have folding mirrors on my S3, so to save on someone clipping them a scumbag removed both the drivers and passangers mirror for me on Christmas Eve.

How thoughtful. Waiting for the sapres to arrive before I can get them fixed.

Its pretty ****** cool tbh huh, if you wanna lock out your rear or have no rear suspension this could be of use at times, I saw it in a mates bike & thought thats snazzy but damn expensive, but what a wicked design.

Very cool piece of engineering. A couple of my mates already interested after I sent on the link, they run hardtails. I've got a Stumpjumper with the integrated brain controlling the rear suspension, works a treat for me, although gets a fair bit of bashing for being crap.
 
Just back from having the mirror fixed. £260, parts and labour. Less than my insurance excess (which has now been lowered), but still 260 bangers lighter. Think I got off lightly as NHN suggested.

On my way to work after dropping the car off this morning, a 59 plate S4 drove passed me with his driver's mirror hanging off. Bus had clipped him. Cost him £450, but think he was going to contact the bus boys and rant at them.

Thanks for all the help though. Hopefully won't have to post another similar thread.
