Retrofitting RS4 (B7) Steering Wheel

eeek!! did somebody die?
Don't do it. Dual stage airbag + single stage controller = death

or is that the Audizine story from a couple of years ago where the guy didn't sound like he knew what he was doign when it was fitted?

When I was looking into getting this done, I was digging around quite a lot to find out about this: only found two cases of B6's ahving been retrofitted with B7 wheels and then having crasehd: one was a bodged home-job, where the airbag didn't deploy and then the other was professionally fitted by an Audi sparky and it did work. Go figure which route I chose when I got mine fitted ;)

(well mine was done by an ex-Audi sparky actually :))

Audi spark shall be doing mine then!! i was gutted when i read the above on the other forum.

i bought a ttrs fbsw on ebay.i have been told i can fit it but the air bag won't deploy in an accident because it's a 2 stage action and my 2004 b6 quattro sport avant is a single action, are they right? if not what do i need to make it work? i also want the buttons to work the audio/phone.:sos:
art.

youll need the correct slipring and mod the loom to suit the single stage, it can be done , theres loads on here have it

As much as I realise you're trying to do it yourself, if you get really stuck, Hazzy Dayz (vwcruise.com) will do the fitting for £165.

Pretty sure the TTRS is exactly the same as fitting a B7 wheel (NOT that I've had any experience with those myself, but the guys at Hazzy Dayz will be able to confirm that for you)... they wired my R8 leather three-spoke FBMFSW so that the single stage sensors are wired into the larger airbag and I get FULL functionality from the voice dialing, RNS-E integration, etc :) Best mod I ever did!!

If you have an auto, I think they can also wired the paddle-shifters in too :)

As wheelie rightly says as yours is a B6 you'll need the B7 slip ring & steering ecu to make things work & its not proven that the B6 airbag system will/wont deploy when retroing the dual stage fbmfsw airbag, but it will however turn out the light on dash & remove any errors through on car network, many have done even with knowing of possible airbag issues.

TTRS is identical to any fbmfsw as is the RS6, same shape as the TTRS, internals are identical aswell as airbag connections, only difference between varying versions is the size, RS6 & TTRS is thicker & thumb positions are more defined.

You will get full functionality with correct ecu/slip ring.

Yes you can code the paddles to work on an auto car that doesnt have paddles currently.

Depending where you are, there are number people I know who would fit for less than £165.

This http://audiforum.us/8p-platform/12350-audi-a3-crash-whit-singel-dual-stage-airbag-dont-do.html shows an 8L A3 (single stage airbag system) retrofitted with an 8P A3 (dual stage airbag) MFSW in an accident where the drivers airbag didn't go off.

Since the 8L system is like the B6 system and the 8P system is like the B7 system this accident should be taken as a warning that the B7 to B6 retrofit is VERY risky. Remember that is will likely invalidate your insurance too...

I am aware of that one Dave, but we dont know if he wired it up any different to us others, but the guy has been made aware of the potential risks so he can weigh up what he wants to do.
