i got a 98 audi a4 1.8t....trying to figure out what calipers fit on my audi for the front and rear

Cool. I have made the same enquiry a few weeks back and returned some very good answers. Do a search and you should find it. To fit S4 calipers (which, caliper wise, is the first step on the ladder, then you got porsche items, AP, Brembo etc etc....) you need S4 uprights and driveshafts, so its going to be expensive. Mate, unless your pushing some serious power its not worth it. Stick with a standard set up in good nick, good fluid and some performance pads. I was going to go mad with mine, but the bods on here made me change my mind. Got a brand new standard set up now with pagids. Very happy.

P.S.......I noticed you posted about this on the B6 forum. Have you got a B5 or a B6 mate??!!!!????

I would disagree... First, the most cost effective brake upgrade is a set of 312mm discs and caliper carriers. They will sharpen up the feel and make a big difference in braking from high speed... I wont waste me time with s4 calipers as they are too heavy and offer not soo much impreovement over the 312mm brakes. If you want to see improvement, a set of front Porsche calipers radial mounted calipers(as fitted to the Seat Cupra R) with caliper brakets will work much much better. Throw a set of s4/audi s8 front brake discs and Bob's your uncle. However, you will need to upgrade the rear brakes as there will be an inbalance bettween front and rear. I have 4pot ATE Power Calipers and discs(custom bells and brakets) on the front and rs4 rear 312mm brakes and calipers. They not much, much sharper than the previous 312mm OEM set-up i had prior that on the front of me a4 quattro.

It said the porshe cayanne turbo s calipers fit onthe audi but can I put the cayanne calipers on the rear. Is it a direct fit oram igonna need brackets

cayanne turbo calipers are only a direct fit to S4/RS4's they wont bolt onto a A4. youll need to get S4 uprights. they fit with 345mm mercades ML55 discs and need collered bolts as the porsche uses bigger bolts.

its alot of hassle to get the cayenne rears on the back, and is much cheaper to fit some 280mm from a facelift S8. however this again, is for an S4, im not sure how the rear caliper setup differs on an A4.

Disagreed. A 24mm/0.94" difference over standard size will not make a noticeable difference in immediate performance. The only logical reason for such a small increase in size would be a very slight difference in heat dissipation, thrashing your brakes for prolonged periods and the performance would be better for slightly longer. Cost wise this is hardly effective, as carriers add £50-100 (depending on how lucky you are) and the bigger disks 30-35% more expensive. Unless your pushing in excess of 280+ bhp a standard setup in GOOD nick with good fluid, good pads and good tyres more than suffices.......I have to add this is my opinion. As I'm sure bods will agree with this, I'm more sure an equal amount of bods will not.

First, the 312mm has been fitted to nearly all big engined audi cars and they proven to work. Throw a set of ferodo ds 2500 pads and quality brake fluid and they wont fade. They also work just fine with the stock smaller master cylinder and the smaller rear brakes. To fit s4 b5 brakes you need an awfull lot of parts: s4 uprights(alloy ones will do from later a6 models but will need new lower arms as well), discs, pads and new s4 CV joints wich might not fit on some models. Factor in the price of s4 pads ans it gets expensive to the point they not worth-it. I had porsche calipers on me last motor and they worked out cheaper than a 2nd hand s4 set-up( with new discs and pads!) but they were not a masive improvement over the 312mm brakes !

I didn't suggest fitting s4 calipers. I simply put forth the notion that upgrade wise for CALIPERS, not DISKS(and a 312mm disc upgrade has fu*k all to do with them) S4 items are one of the first steps on the ladder. I get nearly ****** all fade from my set-up, and yes they are 288mm, and yes it is a big engined Audi. Some bods think that their brake system is crap because it isn't BIG enough. As a matter of fact its more likely due to their setup being bolloxed. If they bothered to overhaul the oe setup, fit decent pads and treat it to good fluid they wouldnt be so hasty to upgrade and waste there beer tokens on something they do not need(but want coz its/there shiny shiny and B.I.G.). Brake fade? Track days aside, if your driving hard enough on public roads for this to happen then you don't belong in a car, you belong in a pram, or behind the wheel of a corsa with full ripspeed options(whats the difference). I'm not referring to you mate, just putting the point across. So your aware, and so you don't think i'm on about something I know sh*t about, I did the 312mm conversion last 2 weekends ago. Had them on there 3 days and sacked it going back to 288mm. I'm currently running solid brembo discs and 2500's on overhauled calipers and goodridge lines. Noticed ****** all difference opposed to the 312mm on same pads and calipers. Ever heard of a placebo? Thats the effect they had. Nothing. All in the grid (head) mate.

The ONLY advantage of fitting larger brakes is better heat dissapation and better pad selection. They will NOT stop the car quicker in normal circumstances. They may also give you slightly better "feel" thru the pedal.

That said, it depends how you drive the car, a couple of hard stops from "motorway speeds" will see the standard 288's fading, unless your on proper tasty pads. Similarly if your giving it large down a windy country track, you'll fade them eventually.

I put 312's on becuase i wanted better heat dissapation without spending megabucks on pads and because the front brakes were done anyway. All in it cost me £50 extra for the carriers compared with just refitting the 288's. Disks and pads were the same price and i used standard mintex parts.

Phoenix: why on earth did you remove the 312mm disks?

No mate, as Aragorn said, its not in the head ! You will have less pedal travel to the same bite and you need to drive 2 cars with the same set-up one after another to realise the difference. Matter of fact i have me a6 fitted with 312mm brakes on stock ATE pads and discs all round and missus passat on 288mm brakes. I tend to drive quite fast when i need a fix(speed does it for me!) and i go on motorway at speeds of over a ton. You feel the difference when you step hard on the brakes. You right in saying that a good set of pads and quality discs will return better results than a set of shagged brakes but i never play with brakes and i can compare them on a daily basis. I dont wanna get into an argument but a quattro v6 has a lot of inertial mass wich the stock 288mm brakes will have to work hard to stop from high speed. Also, VAG group fitted the 312mm brakes on high powered v6 as a safety measure and not for placebo...but Brembo with the 8pistons calipers and masive discs on a 1.6 might be a bit more likely !:uhm:

Aragorn...I took them off because I could see fu*ck all point in having them fitted. I couldn't notice a difference, and am not a **** on public roads so fade would never be an issue.....That aside, I got them for ****** all ( mates sorn tt) , and sold them for lots of beer tokens!......

"If i was doing it again, for a standard power car, i'd seriously consider just leaving the 288's on there and fitting some decent pads like DS2500's or M1144."........As stated by you mate a few weeks ago in reply to my question. Advice I have followed and I am not dissapointed.

Adam....If it were that much of an issue the design engineers would have had the big engined Audis fitted with them from the get go. FACT. They didn't spend 4+ years at uni for nothing! Mate, we're not argueing (pointless on a forum anyhow, my ***** bigger than yours etc etc...)or about to get into one. Simply exchanging validated opinions. Mate, not trying to mother you here, but why the ******* are you admitting to going at over a ton on a motorway? HATE to say this....If you had to use a makeshift tourniquet made out of a belt on a mates leg that had just been bolloxed by a collapsed bulkhead, you wouldn't be going so fast. Seems like fantasy...Untill its your fu*king leg.

All large engined B6's have the 312's, but the B6 is a little heavier than the B5. All B7's also have them too.

Yer its a flip of a coin, if you can get the carriers cheap enough then fair do's but otherwise, tasty pads and the stock 288's will be fine, for a normal car thats not driven particularly hard.

I've had brake fade in the past while driving completely within the legal limits, although it was on older cars that tend to have penny washers for brake disks. I'm sure if you were pushing on down a nice windy backroad, even keeping it within the speed limits, you could fade the standard 288's on standard pads. Clearly yours will be a lot better with the DS2500's, but you cant disagree that the 312s WILL dissapate more heat?

Of course I agree with that. I would be full of sh*t if I didn't. Its logical that they would dissapate more heat from the friction. Thing is I don't hammer my car(got that off my chest with the jap cars I've owned/track run) so not an issue.

Mate, i dont drive like a **** and first i drive on the continent a lot wich 70Mph limit is pedestrian to us ( driving test should be like an university exam here!) ! On the other hand, i only drive fast when oportunity occurs and its not the speed that kills, but the sudden stop ! If there would not be twats sitting in the fast lane, there would not be faster drivers undertaking and where i am comming from people know how to drive... I took me driving test at 16 and drove a few good million km in me humble life(used to be a cab driver for about 10 years) ! I am 33 by the way(hardly any teenager) and i only had one accident in me life due to black ice- nothing serious ! In Europe, the police can do you if you drive too slow and hinder the traffic. A few years ago, i came from Spain with a faulty auto gearbox(would not go higher than 3rd gear) and i had to drive nearly 2000 miles with the engine on the rev limiter so i could cruise at 100Km/H or 60 Mph to you and me... There were loads of angry lorry drivers on the autobahn, i tell you ! Funny thig is, when i see English drivers on the continent, they rarely go in the middle lane, the just stay in the slow line... rings any bells ? Its the same line they drive here... By the way, my **** is bigger !

Hello Adam. Please read a post carefully before replying (heaven knows it's been 3 days!lol-Thought this post was dead). I didn't call you a **** directly or indirectly. Take a chill pill big lad! Calm down! Go and make yourself a nice cup of Bovril! Yes it is the sudden stop that kills, but the speed at which you are travelling when you stop results in the injuries you sustain/don't sustain. Its called the KINESICS OF INJURY/TRAUMA (i'm a qualified and in date paramedic, so I know the science/math behind RTA Trauma) , but thanks for the heads up on that my old potatoe! Ref your ****, congratulations! You need to go home now (only so your on time for tea and medals). Ref your age I don't care/didn't ask.

Mate, this is very close to turning into an argument/feud. As previously stated, I don't want to! You have had your say, I have had mine. Lets leave it at that 'ay!

Yeah, let's leave-it there ! If you read your post carefully, you are manipulating the words and insinuating things...From high speed driving/braking you diverged to injuries(ok, your line of work!) then how I should be done for driving at such speeds, etc. I reckon me english is a bit better than your russian, dont-ya ? Anyway, merry Cristmas to you too and measure your words carefully next time, especially when you getting into an argument (!) wich wasn't even there in the first place ! Let's not waste any more bandwith on this forum with useless arguments...
