So searching and reading all I could find I came to the conclusion that only 1 person successfully took apart their DIS and successfully repaired their LCD. And that LCD was almost working perfectly to begin with and everyone else who had far worse shape LCDs either made things worse, sometimes much worse, or broke even with no change.

Is that everyone elses conclusion? That you can't really fix these darn things yourself? The heat gun and the extra pressure materiel inserts don't really work?

Is there a success thread I missed or does someone know how to fix it and wouldn't mind sharing the info?

I sure hope not! I see there's an old link to a German shop that repairs them but I'm in the States and don't want to go that overseas route. Someone needs to swing by that German repair shop and spy what the heck they are doing right!!!!

Is there a way to disable the display without taking it apart so you don't have to see it lit up at all?

looks like you just have to buy a new one £150 i think it is, i was one of those who knacked theres too, could read it etc but the 2 lines had my head done in, not as much as when i tries to fix it and got a bright squiggly line all the way down though, thread should have never been stickied

Can you post a link to a place that actually still sells a DIS for a '98 Audi A3? Are they actually new or refurbed old one sitting on a shelf?

Can the plastic dash cluster cover be removed and then have the cluster temporarily reinstalled? Give it power and push down on the face of the lcd and see if compression really is the problem before doing anything more drastic...

I will have a look at the repair thread,it seems to get a lot of thanks and that indicates to me that these members have repaired theres !?

I think any "how to " thread is wide open to people doing things slightly diffrently and blaming the poster.
I read the "how to" on the removal of the front bumper but things didnt go to the letter of the thread... but in large the thread helped.

i will be trying this guy after xmas at the moment he has not relisted for some reason, but i will message him in the new year, by what i can see he has 100% feedback and nothing but good reviews.
maybe he would do some sort of deal if more people were intrested, i just cant live with mine as it is and £200 from this guy compared to £500 from audi, take your pick :)

ex_scoobydoo, did you get this fixed yet? If and when you do, can you get the replace part numbers? I can get this fixed in the states relatively easily if I have that much info!
