My 1.6 only gets about 25MPG from what I've calculated. Although I boot it occasionly (as much as a 1.6 can be booted), it still doesn't seem to get any better when I don't. This is only worked out by how much I put in and how many miles I manage to get.

Is there a way of getting a better calculation? Can VAG-COM give me an accurate reading of how much fuel I've got left rather than the gauge? Also, I've heard the tank automatically won't let you overfill it. Is this true because that would let me get a better average as I can fill it to that point then see how many miles I get then re-fill it to there.

Also, my engine light was on and VAG-COM said I had a Cyl. 1 misfire, but it's cleared up now as the car wasn't driven for two months. But on cold mornings the TCS light stays on for a bit which is odd. Any ideas on what it could be?

Thanks

Use VAGCOM to check if you have any fault codes as this should help you diagnose the TCS light issue, heavy fuel consumption could well be related to an existing sensor prob so first thing you need to do really is get faults codes checked and start from there.

Easiest way to calc fuel consumption is to fill the car up, reset trip counter, refill to top again, divide no. of litres added by 4.545 to get gallons used, divide mileage on trip readout by gallons to get estimated MPG.

So, I did 284 miles on 54.5 litres of fuel last week. 54.5/4.545 = 11.99 gallons. 284/11.99 = 23.68 mpg

Its accurate give or take an mpg

Do the tank challenge mate..see wot you can get out of a full tank

I got to 405 miles before I topped her up again (1,6 2001), said i still had 10 miles in the tank too!!

admittedley near enuff all that was motorway miles, be interesting to see what I would get from town driving..

I'll have to do a full tank, although I've only done 130 since filling it and it's just under half-way empty. Maybe the mis-fire is wasting fuel? I also checked my tyres and they were about 20 PSI instead of 28 so I've filled them up so maybe that will help aswell.

What do I need to replace to stop the mis-firing? The errors I got were:

Also VAG-COM reported my MAF values, as I've heard it could be this. Here's what I got, could it be a faulty MAF?

Not entirely sure so I'm afraid I'm of no help but I'd like to hear any responses as my 1.6 is only doing about 26mpg, as you said it does that whether i boot it or not and whether its town or motorway!

I wouldnt mind 26mpg if it shifted :(

Couple of weeks ago a dodgy plug lead made a cylinder misfire and in the past ive had engine/TC light problems but no warning lights at the mo and still same on fuel!

It never shuts up that ****** car i think my oil sensors faulty its either beeping for low oil(when its not at all) oil pressure constantly and then yet more fuel!

We need help people :p
Sorry i veered off on a bit of a rant there xD

I'm in the same boat as you too guys.

I have been getting outrageous miles to the gallon. At one point i was seeing 12 mpg from the Audi 1.6. (though i was ripping it silly most of the time and hadn't had a service in years)

Now Ive serviced it and I'm actually showing it some respect, its given me 25. Both Mix of town and motorway (mostly town).

I can't seem to get any better from the fat ******!

Rant over.

Maybe we've got to accept it's a heavy car. I pretty much only do city driving so it's obviously going to be worse, but 20 odd MPG really is bad. Maybe I need to have a look at my MAF but I don't know what the stock figures ought to be.

precisely, get an awesome tdi, even a 90 bhp will kill a 1.8t in any gear, its the awesome torque.

er what can i say i have a a3 1.8t a 90 bhp Octavia, and a 115 bhp pd Octavia all cc mapped. and a focus 130 tdci so in declining order of speed here goes

1st by a country mile the a3 1.8t

2nd ya not going to like this...... sorry but its the focus .but i think its down to the bacofoil body work and wide power-band

3rd the 115 pd god i love this car more punch than mike tyson but its all over to soon

4th the 90ps Octavia ...I'm trying to think of something good to say
