hi guys, new to forum so hi from me. some very usefull info on here. i currently drive a 2006 octavia vrs with the 2.0tfsi, love the car (great engine) now thinking of a change and would like 4wd as i find sometimes fwd can be hard work in slippery conditions (which we have quite alot of here!) think an A4 quattro is the obvious upgrade from my skoda but cant decide on petrol or diesel. also does anyone know if the 3.0 tdi has a dpf fitted as this may not suit my needs(mainly shorter journeys)??

3.0 TDI Quattro all the way mate, would'nt want anything else in the rain or snow, its like a tank!

cheers bud was swaying to the diesel, reckon it would be awesome with a remap;) only thing which would put me off would be if it was DPF fitted.
think the new ones are, not sure about older spec? anyone ..

3.o tdi quattro is the better performance option but not thaat much better economy wise, with the weight of the cab & quattro & only average fuel efficiency of this engine only low 30s is probably what you'll get MPG wise.
The A4 cab is with engine is also incredibly nose heavy, the 2.0tfsi is much lighter in the nose and steers much better.
I know we're an Audi forum but what about a 330d? Much better performance handling and economy.

330d is a car that has been considered also, not sure about RWD though. really like the idea of 4wd but dont want to go down the SUV route.
some would say RWD is the ultimate for driving pleasure but for myself in reallity i just want a car which is sure footed in all weathers and has some poke when needs must.

3.0tdi all the way! I have an 05 avant, very pleased. My pervious car was an Impreza so a bit of a difference performance wise. The 3.0 is a great compromise. I get 32-40mpg. My mate has a 3L 325 auto, it is a bit quicker but he gets 28mpg at best. When it snowed last year the quattro was fine (except stopping!) the bmw couldn't get off the drive!

Sometimes i miss petrol but not when I'm nailing it at 32 mpg.

I'd suggest getting a test drive in one.

Chris

The 325 is faster than your 3.0 TDI? I thought the 325d was about 195bhp and the 325i around 215bhp. I'd be expecting the A4 to beat both though tbh. Although I suppose the BMW will be lighter, the 530d is around the same weight as the A4 :-(

Think it's time you looked into a remap :-D is yours the 204bhp version?

We haven't "raced" I'm not 20 anymore! His may be a 335 - he reckoned it was the 270bhp 3.0L diesel, on paper mine is 0.2 of a second quicker 0-60 than the 325D 197 of what ever it is.

Fact remains mine is much more economical, works in the snow and cost me £20k less than his BMW (it is 2 years newer than mine) so he can have the sprint win!

So did you buy a 3.0 tdi then chris, is it the TDV or just the normal tdi e.g 205bhp or 233bhp?

Have you had it remapped yet because once you do you wont stop smiling, its unreal as it can gain an easy 40-50bhp and over 100+ torque and better mpg.

I honestly would'nt go back to a front or rear wheel drive after having a 4wd as we dont live in spain, its always s**t weather here and the 4wd really is a god send.

I also miss petrol as i miss the revs, but when im on the motorway doing 200-300 mile trips im getting over 70mpg!! and thats sitting there at 75mph, if i boot it alot i still get no less than 45mpg.

Obviously the big engine is built for long distance driving, but even around town i get a good 35-40 mpg.

Alot of people call the 3.0 TDi i really dont know why because i have cained faster petrol cars off the lights and in the rain when their wheel spinning im 100m down the road.Yes its no ferrari but its quick enough and at least i get good fuel consumption.

Just tdi - 204ps. Is yours the TDV?

I remapped my 2.5 TDI before and that was great - just can't find the spare cash at the moment!

Yes mate so 233bhp standard, although i had mine mapped but im not happy with the results.

The torque gain is great but the bhp gain is poor so far, i think its only gained about 15-20bhp which cant be right.

So i reckon im going to get it re-done somewhere else next year as it should be at least 270-280bhp.

You have got to stop all this "just the normal 204bhp tdi" business dazmo, I would love to see you out on the road in mine.

I was just asking him which model it was, as they changed it sometime in 2005 i beleive to the tdv 233bhp.

It is not a case of mine is better than yours, as that is just juvenile.

:laugh:Why rowdy are you going to try to ram me off the road when i go past you?

TDI 3.0 is an awesome engine/car, my mates was mapped & was sublime before & after, its the car I am still contemplating buying tbh as I need space, he also rs4 converted his in terms of bodywork, suspension, the works except engine wise of course, he even took the boot chassis out & swapped this for rs4 so he could fit the rs4 exhaust, cost a bundle but beautiful car.

I thought a METRO had already done that!!!! lol

Its not always just about the bhp mate

I have driven both and found the extra weight slung out over the nose quite disconcerting. Drive both and see what you think.

I had the same conumdrum. In the end I plumped for the 2.0Tq. Mainly because it handled better, was quieter, cheaper to buy and cheaper to service (especially at cambelt time) 220bhp as standard. I don't do the miles to warrant the extra cost of buying the diesel.

For starters, it doesn't have a cambelt so that's an expense saved. So overall the service costs will work out similar.
As for noise, I don't know if you have been listening to a rough one but mine sounds no different to a petrol really.
The weight is an issue but reading other threads, the RS4 rarb will help.
Is there really that much of a price difference between the diesel and petrol model because I can't really see any.

Well you learn something every day. I thought the pre 233 bhp motors had cambelts.

I'll give you an example of the price difference;

Tidy (apart from a rear bumper scrape) 05 plate 3.0tdi q with no options with 40K miles on the clock was £16K at York Audi

Just purchased... immaculate 56 plate 16K miles Sline Special Edition with lots of expensive options at Harrogate Audi was £15.5K

You will always get examples like that, especially from main dealers. Here is another, mine is a 55 reg 3.0tdi quattro s-line £11k from an independent. If you look around there is not much difference

Which indy was that mate & mileage?

Which indy was that mate & mileage?

A place called motorhouse in Cannock. 65k miles, fash, one company owner.
I always said I would never buy from a car supermarket but it was too good to pass up.

Sounds like you got a good deal then. Took me from the end August this year to find a car in good enough condition for my tastes/budget

The difference between the two in standard form is very marked. The TFSi engine being only a four pot, is pushed back in the engine bay over the front wheels. The six pot oil burner is like hanging an anchor on your bumper.

Yes the RS4 rarb helps but it also helps on the lighter petrol to the same extent.

As said, drive both, especially down a twisty country road.

Simon.

i guess it depends if you like to enjoy your car or if its just a tool ! i would have to have a 3 ltr tdi as i know a 2 ltr tdi would bore me if i had to use it a lot :)

Yes the 3.0 has the extra weight, but thats not necessairly a bad thing as the 3.0 has extra power and torque to compensate.

And no offence to those with 2.0 Tdis but you can get a 2.0 TDi in anything nowadays so why not get something diferent, if i wanted a 2.0 tdi i would get a Golf or a smaller car.

I bought my 3.0 tdi on the basis thats its more fun,V6 sounds nice, still powerful but economical, its a rare engine so much easier to sell and holds its money better than the 2.0 fleet car.

I plan on having the car lowered soon and have the RS4 rsb fitted so that sort out any weight issues in the future.

I've had my 05 3lt TDi s-line saloon for about 5 months now and i have to say it's been fantastic!!.

Great power, good economy and excellent on a long run, i averaged 38.9mpg on a run
to cornwall 3 months ago! and i wasn't taking my time either!.

I paid £12k for mine with 60k on it, i've done 7k so far and apart from a broken wire to the engine ecu it's been great!!.

Just sorry i'm gonna have to let it go as circumstances call for a little more ground clearance so a Touareg is next for me!!, same engine though!!!, 3lt tdi V6, cos they Rock!

Another believer lol:applaus::kiss::anbet:

Although i drive regularly to the isle of wight and get at least 45 mpg from mine and thats over 200+ MILES and not taking my time.

Interesting thread... I'm toying with the 2.0tq or 3.0q TDV!!!

I don't do big miles, probably around 12k but prefer the tourqe of the diesel. Only problem i'm wary of is the DPF on the 3.0 tdv.

I will be remaping the 3.0tdv as a few of you have done. Will this along with the DPF cause me big problems or will the odd blast on the motorway clear it out??

Is there an option of removing it??

Also who did you all use for the remap, i'm thinking revo??

Thanks in advance

Lads, lads, lads, its all about choice and personal preference. You HAVE to test drive the cars your considering. Make sure its a good long test drive and you get a chance to thrash it, motorway it, drive through town and then drive on twisty roads.

I test drove 2.0Tfsi 2WD and 4WD, 3.0Tdi, (along with Lexus, Audi A6, etc, etc). I was after a car to put something back into my trip to work, like a bit of fun.... once I drove a 2.0T Fsi S-line, that was it, simply a great handling car that actually put a smile on my face, everything else then seemed boring. Then it was a case of 2WD or 4WD..... now winters here and the roads are just about wet every single day it had to be the quattro. The launch..... ace, just ace.

The one drawback? No space in the back, the boys are well cramped, almost a 2+2, they should have made it a bit longer.

Agreed, a bit more room in the back would've been nice!!!

My car is one that has the solid rear bulkhead too so no popping the back seats down for the christmas tree this year LOL.

It is about choice though, like you say.

My scenario was an hours journey to work and back in traffic, also living on a hill that doesnt get gritted as well as it should so a diesel and 4wd was the way forward for me, having looked for a 2lt tdi initially i was put off by the extra premium in price and when i test drove the 3lt, well it was a done deal.

I had looked into the 2lt tfsi route but fuel economy was an issue with being sat in traffic, apart from the 28mpg, real world figure as given to me from a 2lt tfsi owner there isn't much else to disuede you from a petrol.

Yeah, the economy is not too clever, but would disagree with 28mpg, I have measured mine on about 4 or 5 tank fulls now and get 31mpg just about every time. I believe the 2WD boys easily get 34/35mpg and I think thats pretty damn good for a 200bhp car that handles like an s-line does.....

I have to use the 'brimming method' of measuring mpg as theres no average mpg/speed computer as standard on this car...along with no cruise control - this I find an unforgiveable ommission on a car that cost this much. Any Mazda or Toyota has these.

Dont get me started on the rear window wash/wipe....Is there any ****** reason why saloons dont get rear wipers but hatches do? Every morning I reverse out of my drive cursing this fact!! :blahblah1::motz:

hey chaps

Can anyone advise as I am just about to purchase a 3.0 tdv q.
I don't do many miles and little motorway miles, will this cause probs with the dpf or will the odd blast on the motorway be sufficient??

I know I'm not doing the milage to warrent a diesel but much prefer the torque.

Cheers

Cant see any problems tbh, dpf should be ok, good blast should give the turbo a good clean out aswell as exhaust system, dpf on the A3 has known to cause few issues, cant recall any on the 3.0 tdi, maybe someone can enlighten, so far my mates got same car & I've driven his before & after the map, no issues at all & he hasnt reported any.

Hi

Thanks for the responce, was starting to think this thread had gone cold!!

Does your freind have the TDI 202 bhp or the 233 TDV? Was there a noticable improvment in performance after the remap on your freinds car??

Would you say it was a quick car??

Still interested to here if anyone else had had issues with DPF on 3.0 tdv q due to shorter distance usage or remap??

Thanks agian, your feedback is greatly appreciated!!

I wish I'd gone for the diesel as when I brought my 2.0T petrol I was hardly driving it now I've changed jobs it's ruining me on economy. As once mapped and tweeked I simply lack the will power to drive conservatively. Don't get me wrong 270bhp of revving petrol engine is great fun and suprises many other cars on the road but the torque of a mapped diesel is as much fun especially when the car behind is left in a cloud of black smoke. The petrol begs you everytime you drive it to thrash it. It's like having a devil on your shoulder. I thought I'd grown out of street racing as a teenager....the devil is back! Lol
