What car shall I get for a runabout?

Simple choice really! Nice and cheep, fun to drive and generally awesome golf gti mk2 16v!

Im sure Ryan aka Grathies is looking to sell his BT MTM beastieee sooonnnn....give him a shout mate!!! ;)

Why get a runaround?? lol

I'd say a mk1 Focus - £1500 will get you a nice 1.8, and the "quick-clear" windscreen will be a god-send now that the frosty morning have arrived!

Am I kicked out of the club now?

Hence the "club" comment. You won't get much Lupo for that money though, and the Focus is cheap as chips to insure too. Not sure there's much depreciating left for them to do, just make sure you get one with ABS - it wasn't standard until 2003!

There's a nice looking BT S3 on Pistonheads at the moment, don't know if it's sold yet...

52 plate I think with 37k on the clock, silver, MTM conversion and all the trimmings...
11.5k

If it's as good as it sounds I doubt there is a better one about with that sort of mileage.

As for what I'd buy for £1500, I'd probably get a VR6 Golf or something old school,

ie

Mk 2 Golf gti 16v
Astra GTE/GSI 16v
Pug GTI

Something along those lines...:)

Winter approachin and not a RWD in sight, whats the matter with you all.

And as for the Lupo comment lol, maybe it will earn you some "scene" points that i keep reading about lol

Ive got a little 1.25 fiesta! Pretty nippy and still puts a smile on my face! Good little car, but id probably get the golf. The cav looks good! My dad's mate had one but most often the diff used to lock up and mess up. Happened on the cav's and the calibra's. Good cars though. Red top engines were good! Alot of people putting them engines in their corsa's now!

If you want to stay German, a Mk3 VR6 would be good. You can get them for less than a grand too - not sure what insurance will be like though, they're group 17.

i was on pistonheads last night and seen one for £1500 tho it sounded good in the advert but you would have to see it in the metal ;)

What do you need a runabout car for? The only time you need a runabout is if you own a cateram or something similar. I used to use a Lotus Elise as my daily driver! Rain used to poor in through the ***** roof and the inside of the windscreen would need de-icing in the winter. Still loved it though :arco:

If you fancy a sleeper why not a Honda Civic 1.8 VTI? think they are close to 170bhp, very cheap and very reliable! you will need beige trousers to wear when driving it tho!

yer any of the vtecs are pretty darn good! how about a cheap crx vtec? i had one and WOW you will feel like a racing driver :weight_lift2:

:puke2:

Not a fan of Honda's at all! All BHP and no torque! You need to thrash then to get anything out of them! Plus the interiors made entirely of cheep plastic and you'll look like a chav! Plus they look POO! Plus they sound like a hair dryer on crack!

Get a nice German car, lol!

:blackrs4:

crxs arent chav, nice leather interior, very fast, awsome handeling, and when vtec kicks in

:beee:

hahaha prefer my audi but i definatly wouldnt turn down another crx vtec

not if you spend loads of money getting all the rear arches re welded like i did=)mine was mint apart from that! there are an awful lot of really nice ones where i live as everyone knows how good they are! also insurance is very cheap and petrol is amazing

Doesnt that pretty much defeat the point of this thread for being for a cheap runaround? Who wants to buy a car to just use untill you find another one then end up spending money on it!

they are cheap if you dont car about the samll ammounts of rust on arch

If I have a NA car I dont want to wate until 5500 revs until I get any power to get my pile of plastic rust moving!

All ****** shandy drinkers that's what :whistle2:

BMW E34 535/525 is bombproof, quick, and a damn good laugh...

Or a 325i...

Omega V6

Mercedes E280

Nissan 200SX S14, or you can get a non-turbo 300ZX easy for that money...

Carlton/Senator/Sierra even!

10 suggestions and not a 'scrabbler' in sight :search:

Nah, runabout needs to be small, agile and cheap to run. All those V6's etc will drink fuel! Need a little hot hatch. 106/306GTI, Clio 172, Golf GTI etc

RWD great fun i know, but M3's are useless in the snow i can tell you!

Seems that while you could get alot of the cars people have suggested could be got for the £1500 stated, they probably will have issues that need fixing or short mots etc meaning more outlay, not what you want from a cheap runaround

well it went well today, the bloke seems intersted but wants ann aa bloke to come out and do one of them check things.will have to wait and see what happens,
as for the run a bout , that jap crap dont do it for me, if the right big bumpered mk 2 came along, or a nice cav for the right money, cant see my self getting a v6 .

Danny, Was your S3 a Blue one with an MTM remap? and was the person who came to look called Geoff by any chance?
