Yes, I'd rather have spent the £540 on other stuff (or not spent it) but it's a lot less cash than it might have been.
All goodwill payments are made as exactly that - goodwill, so are without admitting any liability that there is a problem.
If you've got FASH, then you have a reasonable chance of arguing for it. No FASH means nothing.

Shouldn't that be the Blue and White flag of Bavaria. After all BMW stands for Bavarian Motor Werks and not all BMWs are made in Munich.
So they didnt try & wriggle out of it because of any mods done to the car because my issues will be taken to audi aswell & I have done some mods, mostly oem, but all as per elsa & shouldnt affect the car overall to cause these issues.

Audi UK wouldn't contribute for mine because an independent garage had put a new tensioner on. Not my problem now anyway as the dealer that sent it to the independent are having to pay the full cost. It serves 'em right for trying to cut costs in the first place
Hope it's not a long job for you, been without mine for 4 weeks now as they waited for authorisation and then parts. As we speak, the engine is still out of the car

It's certainly made me value main dealer service history. I'd be tempted to go specialist once the warranty is over, but now I'd definitely keep main dealer for an extra 2 or 3 years for the peace of mind.

At least with an M3 you expect silly running costs, I didn't expect 4-figure repairs on an A3. It already had a new DSG box at a cost of over £3K before I bought it...
The car has gone in today.
New A4 Avant as a courtesy car - it's ok, but not as much of a step forward from the B7 as I was expecting. The "handbrake button" will take some getting used to.
All being well I'll have mine back on Tuesday with some new non-stretched chains

Well it seems he has been banned for a week. The irony is that he said the moderators were overzealous......It seems he was right.
Pete is a valuable source of info and a respected poster here and i think this reflects badly on the moderators that they could have banned an asset to this site.

I bought an A3 3.2 v6 2004 2 days ago privately, and within a day it started doing the same as yours. Its full audi service history, no independents, and only 58k miles. Im gutted!

Id just like to discuss the symptoms in more detail and how to approach Audi with a view to getting a similar goodwill gesture if i have to get it replaced like you did.

There are quite a few of us on here now with similar problems like Pete is having, all of which may or may not be related to each other. As yet though there has not been a confirmed cure!. I've just had chains and vvt's etc replaced but the problem is still there.
All I would say is don't automatically think that you need the chains etc doing even if Audi say so because, tbh they don't really know either.
For now though I'd keep an open mind and try to enjoy your new purchase.

I'm with Ju on this one - I'd compare your symptoms in some detail to mine, and to other people before getting your chequebook out.
My issues were intermittent and quite severe. When the problem occurred, it was causing the revs to jump heavily - between 600 and 1500 revs, with the engine vibrating really heavily.
It was similar to an intermittent issue on my old W8 (which just went away...) which was likely to be the cam adjusters, as these always fail on the W8 at some point.
The problem was sometimes there on start-up when cold, and also when driving for a while - it could be fine for an hour, but I'd stop at some lights and again the problem would occur. It was very hard to drive at low revs.
My car isn't back from Audi yet, so really hard to know if it's what they think, but the VVT solenoids seems the most likely explanation.

so as not to thread jack ill start another thread if its not the case.
I just took all the coilpacks out and one of them (clearly an older design one) has completely snapped leaving part of it attached to the plug. Insulator has snapped and can see black where its arching to the metal outer casing.
Have a replacement coilpack arriving tomorrow so should be able to sort it tommorow evening.

That's good news, sounds considerably cheaper to fix than mine!
The coil packs are rubbish on these cars.
Thank you so much for your posting. My A3 3.2 DSG has the same problem with the chain and I managed to get 60% from Audi as goodwill. Without your post it wouldnt have happened, Cheers x
I've actually got a similar problem going on, my steering column has to be changed and is covered under the approved used warranty. They've told me that I'll have to pay the cost for the wiring which is not covered as stated in the t&c's...surely if other parts are at fault why should I cover the cost of the wiring? Anyone know where I stand or what I should do next as I don't want to fork out anymore money!
