Another cruise question

Feck me sideways, 2k for that, you're in same boat as me, 57k & turbo blew, rack faulty, etc etc, ridiculous.

I am not so sure you buy quality with Audi, just an excuse for them to charge silly prices.
Interesting that N8's car looks to be sitting lower than Pete's yet they are both down 65mm...I wonder why they dont hook the new T/chain to the old and just pull it through ?

Sounds a money making scheme for you Paddy! Under cut Audi & make a tidy profit :)

His car definitely seems to be a little lower than mine - that photo was shortly after fitting the coilovers, so they've dropped a bit since. N8's car may also be a few mm lower than 65mm - I worked out my drop by comparing the wheel centre to arch measurements with those listed for a standard A3, and was 65mm ish.

As for the timing chain, it's a gearbox off or engine out job, so lots of hours for the dealer grrr.

Is this what they call a thread hijack:jump:

Anyway took my car to have faults cleared and cruise enabled but it seems the module wouldnt accept the login code (11463) mmm

not sure what you mean there ? who were you getting to code it ?

I have done a few FZR timing cam chains and its just a case of whipping the top off and pulling the chain through on the end of the old one. Looking at the pictures on the other thread ( hesitant at 2k), it looks straight forward.
Bearing mind that Audi say you have to remove the air box etc to change the side light bulb !! I would want a 2nd opinion...and a third.

Yeah I had a second opinion from a specialist I really trust that have done a few of these, and they again said 10 hours labour. The garages that try it on are quoting 16 to 20 hours!

The problem is it's not just a case of changing the chain, the tensioners and oil pump need changing - as one of them is likely the reason for the stretched chain.

Some people reckon it's an engine out job - at best it's intake manifold and gearbox out, so either way, plenty of hours.

Yeah, I can see the problem in my suggestion. I bet the Audi chain is endless unlike a bike chain which usually has a joining link....Doh !

Indeed, and if I wait for the chain to stop being endless, it's gonna cost a f*ck load more than £2K to fix...

just need a hammer & punch LOL. Mind you, I think thats how get the drive chain off my VFR :keule:

Cant argue with that lol:moa:
Back to the boring bit (or shall I start a new thread) SLAMMING CARS
Guy couldnt get the module to accept what I thought was the std login code 11463 unless of course the steering config was incorrect (what do I know) and would that stop the login being accepted?:sign_omg::superman::blownose:

I don't see why you need a log in code.?? find someone with vagcom and just activate the options for cruise in the steering module

Dude only way you can go through this with me or anyone else is with VCDS really, unless someone is willing to lend the cable or spend few hours on, but then you have driving to & from them, fuel, your time & probably something to them for helping, etc etc, all adds up & more hassle overall, not trying to force a sale here, but IMHO only one way forward makes sense.

Well I am not using the car for a couple of days so will give the chap doing it time to check the login issue out (engine ecu) and going to ring him friday before I take the car back.If no joy will perhaps have a cable for christmas present:icon_thumright:

From what I remember, you need to enter the code to get the engine to recognise the instructions from the cruise. I had a similar problem, we entered the code to log in and changed all the other coding, but it didn't recognise that cruise was installed.

To sort it, we took it into the workshop and recoded the car from scratch on the 5051. Up and running within 10 mins.

Dipstic, definately get VDS from Nigel, mine has repaid for itself over and over again.

A code is required for cruise, see the following post which may be helpful:-

I fitted mine with no problems, but there again I had a VDS cable. You will get other faults which will clear after you have driven the car a few yards.

All the best

Neil

I agree, VCDS is worth the cost.

We did exactly that, everything was accepted, but it just didn't work. It wasn't some novice forum-trained VCDS user either, it was a mate of mine that's a trained VAG technician and has retro-fitted cruise dozens of times. Just pointing out that VCDS can't always sort your problems.

When I bought my stalk from Audi parts (and it turned out to be the wrong one) "an audi trained technician" told me I would be unable to do it.

Perhaps I was lucky :)

I wasn't making any comparision to your situation just quoting my experience. I am a "novice forum-trained VCDS user" nothing wrong with that and several people on here Nigel (NHN), JohnS3 and VRStu (to name a few) have helped me out a great deal and saved me a fair few dollars.

:beerchug:

Don't take it the wrong way, I know it wasn't aimed directly at me and I'm not saying that you're wrong, or that you don't know what you're doing, but I do get seriously annoyed at the way that people on forums seem to think that because someone has been trained, they instantly know less than the rest of the population.

Well after doing what I didnt want to do (spend a couple of hours trawling through various vagcom threads) I think I know whats wrong so I would expect to have my cruise working on Friday.
Thanks to all for your input

If it works will let you all know.If not back to the drawing board:shrug:
