I know what the R stands for, REALLY expensive! Lol!

I just used VW's online config and if I spec a golf R to the same spec as my S3 it would cost £35,500 !!!!!!! My S3 was £31k. Why on earth would anyone choose to buy a Golf R above an S3 then? The S3 has a better interior, is better made and above all, it costs less! The performance looks to be identical as well. Also, IMO of course, the S3 is an Audi (my experience of VW dealers from having a mkV GTi for two years from new tells me don't even go there) is better looking, way better made and more desireable. I'd be suprised if VW sell many Golf R's as if you add in Recaros, DSG and a few other options the cost gets up to £37k! Feck me and then some more - that's just taking things a bit too far IMO. In fact, I just had a look at a GTI with a few trinkets, Sat Nav, dynaudio, leather, park sensors, xenons, tracker ... that was nearly 30k. Oh dear... no wonder I've not seen many new GTI's on the road!

I guess there's always the Scirocco R? Nice looking, better priced... but crap interior (think EOS), VW dealership experince/build quality oh and 261bhp through the front wheels - Ok in the dry and in a straight line, but it rains in this country, a lot... take yesterday... Mr Bright Green Focus RS who pulled up alongside me at the A10/A14 interchange... I simply left him for dead (and I know he was trying as it was a mate of mine driving it). Sorry Jonno, should have gone S(3)pecsavers :nyah:

S3 is always going to be better than an Golf/Scirocco. The only person who will buy a Golf over an A3 is someone who couldn't afford the Audi simplessss

I did 1000 miles in a Scirocco a few months ago, and I have to say it felt like a special place to be - the car generally felt a bit more special than the A3 - I think being low and ride with pillarless doors does the job nicely.

Given the choice between a Scirocco R and an S3, I'd go Dub. But I would never choose a Golf over an S3.

Im a fan of the MK5 and Mk6 but have to agree that at that price I wouldnt even walk into a VW dealer, which is a real shame.

Even the std MK6 is optimistically priced considering VWs arrogance in sticking a MIGHTY 211bhp under the bonnet!! 211bhp ***!

Drove a mates Scirrocco last week and was very impressed, in particular with the feel inside. VW have moved the game on from the MK5 cabin (which IMO was good anyway compared to most cars in its class)
and I would be happy to get into one after an S3 and not feel like I had taken a significant backward step.

Have top agree again though that 261bhp through the front wheels doesnt get me excited.

4wd Scirocco R?

Yes please:icon_thumright:

Scirocco cabin I will admit feels nice to be in, the stance is lovely to, wide ****, low, all needs now is 4wd & its got my name written all over it

Like the Subaru boys do on the back windows? "I'm a rally driver...." Tacky. I thought you had more class.

all needs now is 4wd

The car I drove was a 2.0 TSI with a remap, so approx 260bhp I guess.

I drove it across Europe on a mixture of roads, and can't say at any point it struggled for traction, so I'm guessing a standard R is fine.

If you're planning to tweak to 350+ bhp as people tend to with S3's, then it may start to become more of a handful I guess!

Except for the person (or 2) that pays 5 grand more for a Golf R than an S3 :nyah:

Not really a fan of the nasa factory suspension Nige

Well you'd have to half a couple screws loose really :tocktock:

Here's before of them together before I got it painted:

The Scirocco R is a nice looking car, meant to drive well too. Ultimately its too expensive which means its trying to occupy the same space as the S3.

Like I say I do like it but if I were spending that sort of money an S3 would come first every time. Same applies for the Golf R too.

The nearest thing I can compare the Rocco R to is a previous remapped Mk5 Gti, so unless the Rocco has a very trick chassis and is significantly cleverer than the MK5 Golf, then it will be a complete handfull in the wet, on a damp road, or even in the dry with just a small amount of lock.

Im sure it will be very good, and those who have not had hatches with 4wd wont care much, but for me it would be hard to go back to having upwards of 300bhp in a fwd car after 4wd.

cheers
Paul

there's no way s3's interrior is better than golf's R....quality of golf can't be better..s3 has hard plastics and the design can't be compared with golf's...I personally drive the 1.4tsi 122ps and have driven my friend's a3 1.8T.. the only section that was better at was power..golf: better sterring, better feel, easier to drive, better rolling..even brakes were the same good with golf's being more friendly..comparing golf R with s3 will really exhibit golf as the best... and it makes sense if you think that s3 is very old..next s3 will be better than golf mk6 R..there's an engrossment with s3 and you can't see clearly that golf mk6 R is much better and much worth it's money than s3..

The audi has superior interior materials.......fact

The S3 old?..... 3 years tops?

Better rolling? are the golf's wheels rounder?

mk6 golf does have a very good interior. The A3 is clearly much better than the mk5's interior but the mk6 has stepped it up a bit thats for sure. I would have an S3 any time over a Golf, they are only bought by "dub" boys who buy into the way of life!

Thing is mate. My local dealer is VW /Audi so has both . I speced up an S3 DSG with everything i need......which is just about everything short of buckets and it came out at £33.500. They also have a Golf R DSG in stock ready to go and its £40.500 with buckets but without all the bits. Now i make that £7k less and its difficult to see why. I agree the 8p is nearly 7 years old now but that dosnt make the Mk6 any better. It does seem odd that having made a AWD setup for the Golf they dont use it for the rocco but its only a matter of time.

audi may have superior interior materials than vw but golf mk6 has supperior interior than a3....of course it's old... the facelift only is 2 year's old...this boot exists for at least 6 years..golf R: 1 year old boot,0.5 year old engine and mechanical parts.a3:at least 6 years old boot and mechanical parts over 2 years... does a mercedes cls and vw polo rolls with the same way..they both have very round wheels..

giorogs
One question. Would you spend £40,500+ on a Golf ?

its the same engine....... and if you read the post , it's specifically the S3 not the A3 in general, you even said yourself, " the S3 is very old" .your golf has better rolling? and your saying Audi uses superior plastics, except the golf is better?

personally I wouldn's spend 40,500+ for a golf but I wouldn't also spend 30,000+ for s3...I would generally prefer a car from bigger category..but between a golf R with 40,000 and a s3 with 30,000 definetaly golf..

Thats made no sense at all.
Also the Mk6 Golf is not completely new and is more like a mk5.5 Many of the drivetrain /chassis components are the same.
The engines are also the SAME between the two ranges, so get your facts right.

of course it rolls better....you are right about the engine(they are driving as crazy with all these tsi-tfsi engines(twin or turbo charged))...Audi generally has better quality but this doesn't mean that every audi has better quality than every Vw...no doubt golf has better quality than a3...excuse me for my english.

I have driven all a3,mk5,mk6 and believe me no similarity can be noticed...I am sure that golf R worths its money(if you are interested in a gti car). and the fact that it chassis is based on mk5 doesn't mean anything..they are two completely different cars..

please explain what you mean by "rolls better" ? all 3 cars are based on the same platform...how can there be no similarity?

i always though that the running gear of the Mk5 was the first to be developed and so all models like leon, fabia and whatever else spawned from it were modifications of that running gear, therefor the origionaly developed running gear would roll better than the mod?

the golf R is the same age as the 8p S3 , thats exactly what it is with a golf body on it , same engine , drive train , brakes the lot apart from having the latest generation haldex wich is only on the 8p s3 from 08
my mate had a basic R demo he works for vw and even he said he prefered my car

yawn.....they're the same bleeding car! If anybody wants to pay another few grand for cheaper plastics and lesser quality interior, go for it, i'm happy with the S3 and a nice wad left to carry on building my Caterham.

excuse me for my english...by "rolls better" I mean..I don't know how to explain it.. the bigger the wheelbase the better the rolling..that's why a mercedes rolls better than a polo..I don't know the exact word..in greek it's "ποιοτητα κυλισης"..the chasis is only based on it..it certainly has differences as many more other parts..I am just saying that the result is the best car of its category(I am talking about 1.4 tsi 122 and its components like astra(1.4),focus(1.6),auris(1.6)).

because my german is very rusty and I have seen this video could you please tell me the most important points??
