HI, I have a major prob with my car, its an R reg 1.6 Audi A3 with s line kit and running gear.... anyway it wont go through MOT! It passes on evrything except emmissions, when the idling test is done water and smoke come out the exhaust, we have recently had the head done, changed the throttle body, changed the cat. The car does not overheat, there is no water in the oil or oil in water etc, taken it to mechanics, no one knows what is wrong with it!! Its been off the road for six months now as no mot on it.......... I want my car back, do i just change the engine or what......., dont know what it can be.........has anyone any ideas? Is this a known problem? Any advice most welcome.........thanx samantha

Start by getting someone to scan for any fault codes.
When were the spark plugs / oil and air filter last changed? If they haven't been changed in a while, I would try that first than go for a re-test. If the oil is too thin and the engine is 'worn', it can get up the bores and burn off, if the air filter is dirty / blocked it could cause overfuelling from the lack of air being drawn in.

Hi and thanx, weve done a complete oil change and service, plugs leads etc.......the head has just gone back to be pressure tested to the guy that skimmed it... he says its fine so taking it to someone else for second opinion.....next step will have to be diagnostics then wont it..... Money is tight at the moment too with xmas and supposed to be moving in Feb..... been told today when phoned VAS in Newquay that its possible the engine block could be cracked!!!!
Looking for another car to buy for me in the meantime as i have a feeling it will take a while for this one to be on the road again........... thanx samantha

I'm doubtful if it is the block that has cracked, most VW / Audi / Seat engines last almost forever (when looked after). I have heard of rod failure on turbo engines suffering from oil starvation which end up with a big hole in the block but not cracked blocks.
If in doubt, take it to another mechanic / specialist for a second opinion. I'm not sure who is local / recomended in your area but I'm sure someone on this forum can point you in the right direction.

My monies on the Lambda sensor
Flush the engine, change the oil and filter, try not to use long life (5w30) go for 10w40, good luck:icon_thumright:

I'm not sure by your description but if its the FAST IDLE emission test thats giving problems then this is normal, theres a note in the MOT manual that states some A3 1.6 cannot always hold a fast idle even when theres nowt wrong with it, It dosn't sound like this is the problem as its usually noted by the fact that you can't hold a steady fast idle & the revs just keep climbing. There may be more to it than I can remember but I'd get the tester to check the manual to be 100% sure.

Just noticed the above part of your post but I'm not sure I've pick you up correctly. You've spent a fair bit of cash trying to cure a problem by just throwing parts at it & only now that who ever is trying to fix it is scratching there head you believe diagnostics are needed.
The first step of any emissions related problem should be diagnostic checks via a fault code scan then checking the lambda readings/correction factors. If this hasn't been done yet I'd recommend & new mechanic as the next step.
Sorry if I'm coming across as being negative towards your situation but I just don't understand this backward way of working, Its seems to be a very common mistake of uneducated mechanics but as long as the labour rate is lower that a dealer customers seem to find it acceptable but I defo wouldn't.

A shot in the dark but this happened to my mums civic we did everything but couldn`t find anything, turned out to be the baffles in the rar box that had gone and blocked the rear box with the wadding in the baffles. Changed it and it passed. We had done cat, manifold, lambar sensor, plugs, leads, even Vtec system.

Get the diagnostics done and then go from there, that will be your starting point.
If you have a look there is a sticky with a list of users with VAGCOM, who should be able to run a diag for you if there is anyone local, hopefully you will make some positive progress from there....
Also my bet is on the lambda sensor as well, I had the same issue on mine.

If RK don't sort you out Celtic Tuning are a bit further up the road at Roche, can do the diagnostics and the mechanical work - they tune most things but are VAG servicing specialists. 01726 892 873

i just had the same problem, replaced the Cat, plugs and air filter and that didn't fix it. Scoped the lambda with vagcom and found it was only working intermittently so i changed that and got a pass
