Are these any good??

yep they're good.

As for what it'll do it depends on the version of vagcom you install. The free version will do the basics like allow you to pull fault codes. You can buy a licence for $100 that lets you do quite a lot more.

I am very interesting to get this for my car too but will it work for my S4 its 1999 model? and also where can I get the software for my laptop to run check up on my car.

Thanks, if I were to want to clear codes, will this let me do it?

Is buying the Licence a must? or can the software be 'aquired' another way ?

:)

nez: yep it works on all B5's (and many other vag cars)

orb: The free version will allow you to clear the codes, and yes there might be some early versions of the software floating around that might do everything and might work perfectly on a B5.

Latest software version you can use on a copy lead is 409.1, but that does everything you want to do on a B5 anyway.

One nice advantage of buying the $100 licence, is that if you do upgrade to a proper cable kit in future (they're about $250 for the cable and a licence for the full software) to use with a newer canbus car, they'll give you the $100 off the purchase price of the full lead.

B5 doesnt use canbus though, its only mk5 golfs and newer and B7 A4's and newer you really need canbus for

if youre local to romford, i bought mine off an ebay seller that sells them from the news agent down squirrel lane

yup, i needed one in a hurry a few years back when a friend decided they needed to buy a mk4 golf and they needed to see it that afternoon!

well worth getting. i thought my s4 would have a whole host of problems but in reality it was just a boost leak
