Hi all,

Well the dreaded has happened and recently the clutch has been slipping on the S3. I've never had a clutch changed on any of my previous cars, so I'm not entirely sure what a good price is for this.

I've spoken to Mr. Clutch this morning, who I've been told are usually pretty good on price and they have quoted me £452.92 just for the clutch and fitting.

Then... they said I will more than likely have to change the Dual Mass Flywheel and Concentric Slave Cylinder if I heard right? Which being a garage are bound to tell me this needs doing after taking the car apart, taking the job total to £899.24!

To be honest, the £452.92 on its own will be a struggle for me so I was just wondering how good a price that is and how important getting the other bits they've mentioned done was?

why do you need to change the flywheel? I never changed mine.

Slave cylinder probably just as well if gearbox is out.

£452 is not a bad price.

I haven't a clue to be honest, that's why I was asking how important they were. Do I need to get the Slave Cylinder done as well though, or would you just say it's a good idea too while they have the gearbox out?

I do want to look after my S3, but I just haven't got the money to spend at the moment if these things don't actually need doing.

Definitely get the slave cylinder changed at the same time, as it's not much extra in labour, but if it goes at a later date, all the labour again, plus a new clutch again...

Cheers,

I had the flywheel changed on mine, mainly as it costs so much to get the box off I didn't want to have to pay for it all again if the flywheel went 6 months later.

If the clutch has been slipping it's more than likely dmaged the flywheel too. I would 100% get the slave changed while they are in there, it's an **** of a job as the lot needs to come out to change a simple £30 part. If they cant warrenty the job including using the old flywheel then it's all good as thats a very good price considering it's a least a days work even on a ramp

i would agree,if its been slipping then it more then likely the flywheel will need changing. i got mine don by jody at midland vw for £700 and something, great service there.

Thats a good price. Mine was about £600 for clutch and slave which i thought was good too.

The eejit that owned my s3 before me had the clutch done without the flywheel and as usual it knocks like a **** so i have to get the box out and do that. Always change the concentric slave, its a bearing and i always fit a new release bearing to any clutch kit just unfortunate its a little more expensive.

i just changed mine my self not too bad to do.i have changed dualmass flywheel, clutch, slave cylinder all luk parts got them at a good price all in £430

i fitted it my self in my garage i got the parts from a friend who works at euro parts.

i changed my clutch myself after it slipping for a while and didnt replace the flywheel and have had no problems from it for a year now. At the time i had no ramp so i did it on the ground and wished i never started it but finished it in a couple of days, so save me lots of pennys. wouldn't recommend anyone to do it without a ramp tho.

Mines at a garage in Bristol getting the clutch, flywheel and slave cylinder done now, approx £900.

My clutch had been slipping for ages though (10-15K miles) which I guess contributed to needing a flywheel - face was blue apparently. It could easily be driven around though as it was only when booted in 3rd or 4th that it was slipping. I had been avoiding doing it until I decided I was definitively keeping the car and remembered that booting it in 3rd or 4th was why I got it in the first place.

Mine is the same, slips when giving it a bit of throttle in 3rd and 4th... you just hear the noise shoot up, but don't go anywhere with it! :ermm:

Where in Bristol is yours booked in to, and is it higher or lower than £900 as mine is going to cost £899.24 for the lot to be done at Mr. Clutch in Fishponds?

I had my clutch changed after 52k miles, my gearbox decided to explode and take the clutch with it, retained the original Flywheel though, with no problems at all.

£912 I think - I'll find out later today what it is exactly - at streetwise.

Ah right, so mine really isn't a bad price then. It's just the shock of going from having no problems at all, to having £900 to pay in one hit. I think I've heard of Streetwise... in Whitehall aren't they?

Grr, not happy about having to use my re-map/alloys money to get a clutch!

Yeah, Lawrence Hill area -> Streetwise Automotive. They were recommended to me on here a couple of weeks ago and seem nice and friendly and prices aren't bad. I had them do an MOT, Service, Haldex Oil & Filter and Brake fluid change last week and they are doing the clutch et al yesterday and today. Needed 2 tires and also got pads and disks all round on the misses Clio 197 this month. It doesn't half add up quickly!

If you look in the Audi workshop manual there are checks as to whether the flywheel should be changed or not. If it's either out of shape (not flat) or the rotational movement will exceed the tollerances Audi suggest then it should be changed. I ended up changing my clutch because the flywheel was getting on my nerves not the other way around.

If anyone is interested I'll try and post up the details of the checks.

Where did you get yours done too? Was it a local garage or part of a chain?

It was a local VAG independant in Derbyshire called Sports Tech. They did some work on my M3 for me too but think they just do VAG cars now

Mr clutch is rubbish had a cluth changed by them on one of my cars and had untold problems same for one of my mates

do they not do a single mass flywheel kit for the s3 ? will cost a hell of a lot less but put up with a lot more abuse :D

apparently rule of thumb with dual mass flywheels is it gets changed with the clutch so all the manufacturers say its just a new way for them to rack in money... :ermm:

has everyone whos had their clutch changed just had a standard one fitted ???

Yes standard clutch and DMF fitted in October; origional clutch only slipped following chipping, replace by Audi Plymouth and good as gold since. Standard clutch fine with chipped cars but BT cars probably push it a bit far. Pig of a job to change though, much longer than most 1.8T engined cars
