I have bought a 57 plate A3 sportback (3 door) 2.0 tdi 170 s-line s tronic which i pick up Thursday. I am new to this forum and would like to know if a 3 door would have had to be a special order back in 2007 as most are 5 door and i have not seen another 3 door.
Please excuse my ignorance.

I'm preety sure sportback is the label for 5 door audi a3, and the 3 door just remains a hatchback

any pictures?

Surely if it's a 3 door it isn't a Sportback, just a regular A3?

The term A3 Sportback has always been Audi's term for the 5-door version. There is no such thing as a 3-door Sportback.

Whoever is selling it doesn't know what they are talking about.

Unless it's a cut and shuffle job - Front half A3-3door welded to an A3 Sportback rear end.

Anyone else think a real 3-door A3 Sportback would look awesome? With panels instead of rear side windows?

Damn, if only I was good at Potatoshop, I'd show you all how cool my idea is :p

I think the sportback name is rubbish anyway, it should be called an A3 5-door!

Sportback, what makes the 1.6 SE version sporty?

Sportsbacks are for those who have wives and children... (no offense meant to anyone with a family or anyone without a family but with a sportsback!!!)

Or for those, like me, with a 91 year old mother who would have trouble getting in and out of a 3-door car. Having had several 3-door A3s and three Sportbacks, I would always go for the Sportback. Much easier to carry rear seat passengers.

I think sportback is a cool name, and I also love the shape of the sportback, regardless whether u need 5 doors or not. Plus 09 LEDs are cool. Most of my mates prefer my car to 3 door A3s anyway

At some angles they look better yeah for sure but for me roof rails are a must for a mini avant look

Always preferred A4's in Avant shape aswell..............Thats it A3 Avant!:o.k:

I wish I had an SB now tbh, would of solved my future dilemma.

You say!

Hmm, maybe some people actually prefer how it looks, or can't be ***** tipping the seats and getting rained on when letting folks in and out of the back, just for some made-up vanity reason.

I've always preferred more doors...makes life easy! (er)

Totally agree. I also agree that the Sportback looks better than the 3-door. I hated the name Sportback when it was first introduced - too American. I have got used to it now but I would still have preferred A3 Avant.

At the risk of this turning into another "my A3 diesel is faster than a Civic Type R" or "petrol vs diesel" or even "S3 vs Cayman" style thread...I'd say the SB looks better too.

A bit 'different' :hi:

Are roof rails available for the SB ? couldn't find them on the Audi UK site

The fact that the sportback looks like a mini estate is the reason I don't really like it.

I might like it if they did something like this.....

Instead of this....

It is true though that 3 door models do seem to be a lot more rare.
Personally i've never been a big fan of the sportback. I'd probably rather have an A4 if i needed rear doors.
Purely my opinion though. Obviously a lot of people like them because the majority of A3's i see are sportback.

Yes. They are option no 3S1 for Aluminium and 3S2 for Black and cost £225 and are available on all Sportback models.

Would be a PITA to retro fit then? Assume they are bolt on?

It would be possible but not that easy as the headlining would need to be at least partly removed. Also I would think they would cost more than the £225 option price.

I have a feeling someone on here has done it in the past. Try searching for Roof rails and see what turns up.

Will do, cheers

Before the newest A4 came out there was very little difference in space for front and especially rear passengers between the A3 Sportback and A4, if anything the A3 Sportback was a little bit more - of course this has been 'fixed' with the B8 model.

The 'Sportback' name must work - Audi have gone with it again for the 4 door A5, by the time A1 comes out every possible configuration will be on offer - Q7 Cabriolet anyone?
